Configuration interaction wave functions: A seniority number approach
This work deals with the configuration interaction method when an N-electron Hamiltonian is projected on Slater determinants which are classified according to their seniority number values. We study the spin features of the wave functions and the size of the matrices required to formulate states of any spin symmetry within this treatment. Correlation energies associated with the wave functions arising from the seniority-based configuration interaction procedure are determined for three types of molecular orbital basis: canonical molecular orbitals, natural orbitals, and the orbitals resulting from minimizing the expectation value of the N-electron seniority number operator. The performance of these bases is analyzed by means of numerical results obtained from selected N-electron systems of several spin symmetries. The comparison of the results highlights the efficiency of the molecular orbital basis which minimizes the mean value of the seniority number for a state, yielding energy values closer to those provided by the full configuration interaction procedure.Fil: Alcoba, Diego Ricardo. Seniority number in spin-adapted spaces and compactness of configuration interaction wave functions
This work extends the concept of seniority number, which has been widely used for classifying N-electron Slater determinants, to wave functions of N electrons and spin S, as well as to N-electron spin-adapted Hilbert spaces. We propose a spin-free formulation of the seniority number operator and perform a study on the behavior of the expectation values of this operator under transformations of the molecular basis sets. This study leads to propose a quantitative evaluation for the convergence of the expansions of the wave functions in terms of Slater determinants. The non-invariant character of the seniority number operator expectation value of a wave function with respect to a unitary transformation of the molecular orbital basis set, allows us to search for a change of basis which minimizes that expectation value. The results found in the description of wave functions of selected atoms and molecules show that the expansions expressed in these bases exhibit a more rapid convergence than those formulated in the canonical molecular orbital bases and even in the natural orbital ones.Fil: Alcoba, Diego Ricardo. A study on the immunological basis of the dissociation between type I-hypersensitivity skin reactions to Blomia tropicalis antigens and serum anti-B. tropicalis IgE antibodies
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Two conditions are used as markers of atopy: the presence of circulating anti-allergen IgE antibodies and the presence of positive skin prick test (SPT) reactions to allergenic extracts. The correlation between these conditions is not absolute. This study aimed at investigating immunological parameters that may mediate this lack of correlation. Individuals whose sera contained anti-<it>B. tropicalis </it>extract IgE antibodies (α<it>-Bt</it>E IgE) were divided into two groups, according to the presence or absence of skin reactivity to <it>B. tropicalis </it>extract (<it>Bt</it>E). The following parameters were investigated: total IgE levels; α<it>-Bt</it>E IgE levels; an arbitrary α<it>-Bt</it>E IgE/total IgE ratio; the proportion of carbohydrate-reactive α<it>-Bt</it>E IgE; the proportion of α<it>-Bt</it>E IgE that reacted with <it>Ascaris lumbricoides </it>extract (<it>Al</it>E); the production of IL-10 by <it>Bt</it>E- and <it>Al</it>E-stimulated peripheral blood cells (PBMC).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Total IgE levels were similar in the two groups, but α<it>-Bt</it>E IgE was significantly higher in the SPT-positive group (SPT<b>+</b>). A large overlap of α<it>-Bt</it>E IgE levels was found in individuals of both groups, indicating that these levels alone cannot account for the differences in SPT outcome. Individuals of the two groups did not differ, statistically, in the proportion of α-<it>Bt</it>E IgE that reacted with carbohydrate and in the production of IL-10 by <it>Bt</it>E- and <it>Al</it>E-stimulated PBMC. Both groups had part of α-<it>Bt</it>E IgE activity absorbed out by <it>Al</it>E, indicating the existence of cross-reactive IgE antibodies. However, the α-<it>Bt</it>E IgE from the SPT-negative individuals (SPT-) was more absorbed with <it>AlE </it>than the α-<it>Bt</it>E IgE from the SPT+ individuals. This finding may be ascribed to avidity differences of the α-<it>Bt</it>E IgE that is present in the two groups of individuals, and could occur if at least part of the α-<it>Bt</it>E IgE from the SPT- individuals were elicited by <it>A. lumbricoides </it>infection.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The present results suggest that a low ratio of specific IgE to total IgE levels (in a minority of individuals), and differences in α-<it>Bt</it>E IgE avidities (which would have high affinities for <it>A. lumbricoides </it>antigens in SPT- than in SPT<b>+ </b>individuals) may play a role in the down-modulation of type-I hypersensitivity reaction against aeroallergens described in helminth-infected individuals.</p
Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces for THz: Hardware Design and Signal Processing Challenges
Wireless communications in the THz frequency band is an envisioned
revolutionary technology for sixth Generation (6G) networks. However, such
frequencies impose certain coverage and device design challenges that need to
be efficiently overcome. To this end, the development of cost- and
energy-efficient approaches for scaling these networks to realistic scenarios
constitute a necessity. Among the recent research trends contributing to these
objectives belongs the technology of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces
(RISs). In fact, several high-level descriptions of THz systems based on RISs
have been populating the literature. Nevertheless, hardware implementations of
those systems are still very scarce, and not at the scale intended for most
envisioned THz scenarios. In this paper, we overview some of the most
significant hardware design and signal processing challenges with THz RISs, and
present a preliminary analysis of their impact on the overall link budget and
system performance, conducted in the framework of the ongoing TERRAMETA
project.Comment: 5 pages, 7 figures, EuCAP 202
A study of the partitioning of the first-order reduced density matrix according to the theory of atoms in molecules
This work describes a simple spatial decomposition of the first-order reduced density matrix corresponding to an N -electron system into first-order density matrices, each of them associated to an atomic domain defined in the theory of atoms in molecules. A study of the representability of the density matrices arisen from this decomposition is reported and analyzed. An appropriate treatment of the eigenvectors of the matrices defined over atomic domains or over unions of these domains allows one to describe satisfactorily molecular properties and chemical bondings within a determined molecule and among its fragments. Numerical determinations, performed in selected molecules, confirm the reliability of our proposal. © 2005 American Institute of Physics.Fil:Bochicchio, R.C. Universidad de Buenos Aires. Panasonic Small Cell Testing for AHPS
AEA selection and successful Interim Design Review for AHPS proves maturity of small cell approach for very large batteries. Cells show excellent opportunity for battery mass reduction for AHPS and other low cycle applications. Lack of cycle and extended calendar life make EOL battery performance difficult (AHPS 8 year mission). Preliminary design, AEA retained SONY 18650HC cell as baseline: a) Well characterized performance; b) Wealth of safety test data
Impact of childhood and adulthood psychological health on labour force participation and exit in later life
Adulthood psychological health predicts labour force activity but few studies have examined childhood psychological health. We hypothesized that childhood psychological ill-health would be associated with labour force exit at 55 years.
Data were from the 55-year follow-up of the National Child Development Study (n = 9137). Labour force participation and exit (unemployment, retirement, permanent sickness, homemaking/other) were self-reported at 55 years. Internalizing and externalizing problems in childhood (7, 11 and 16 years) and malaise in adulthood (23, 33, 42, 50 years) were assessed. Education, social class, periods of unemployment, partnership separations, number of children, and homemaking activity were measured throughout adulthood.
Childhood internalizing and externalizing problems were associated with unemployment, permanent sickness and homemaking/other at 55 years, after adjustment for adulthood psychological health and education: one or two reports of internalizing was associated with increased risk for unemployment [relative risk (RR) 1.59, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.12–2.25; RR 2.37, 95% CI 1.48–3.79] and permanent sickness (RR 1.32, 95% CI 1.00–1.74; RR, 1.48, 95% CI 1.00–2.17); three reports of externalizing was associated with increased risk for unemployment (RR 2.26, 95% CI 1.01–5.04), permanent sickness (RR 2.63, 95% CI 1.46–4.73) and homemaking/other (RR 1.95, 95% CI 1.00–3.78).
Psychological ill-health across the lifecourse, including during childhood, reduces the likelihood of working in older age. Support for those with mental health problems at different life stages and for those with limited connections to the labour market, including homemakers, is an essential dimension of attempts to extend working lives
