    Climate, Capital, and Culture: How Social Class Structures Perceptions of Global Warming and Sustainable Consumption

SchorSince the 1970's, social scientists have argued that general pro-environmental attitudes have diffused throughout American society, rendering socio-demographics largely irrelevant in predicting support for such issues. The public reaction to the issue of climate change, however, evades this narrative. While media bias, ideological framing, and business influence, among others, are partial explanations, I argue that ignoring the potential implications of structure and culture--specifically social class--in determining why the issue is so demonstrably divisive is a crucial mistake. Building upon the postmaterialism thesis of Inglehart with the cultural theory of Bourdieu, I examine how the conception of and reaction to the issue varies with economic and cultural capital using data from 42 interviews of Boston-area respondents. The results suggest that climate change may indeed be a `classed' issue--both in how the respondents conceive of it in the first place, and how they speak of social class in the context of it. The political implications are various, but suggest that coalition formation will need to take account of these differences, both real and perceived, in both engendering public support for mitigation efforts and subsequently combating the problem.Thesis (MA) — Boston College, 2011.Submitted to: Boston College.     The Filing of an Indictment against a Criminal Defendant Activates His Sixth Amendment Right to a Speedy Trial, Notwithstanding the Fact that the Defendant Had No Knowledge of the Indictment Until the Time of His Arrest.

    In Doggett v. United States, the Supreme Court held the filing of an indictment against a defendant activates his Sixth Amendment right to a speedy trial, notwithstanding the defendant not knowing of the indictment until his arrest. The right to a speedy trial serves to vindicate the rights of individuals who have incurred impediments to their personal liberty because of governmental negligence. The Court stated the Speedy Trial Clause aims to prevent undue and oppressive pre-trial incarceration, limit the anxiety accompanying public accusation, and diminish delays that might cripple a defendant’s ability to prepare an adequate defense. Since Doggett suffered no restriction of liberty, he should not be eligible to the presumption of prejudice that would normally attend so long a delay. Had the majority analyzed Doggett in terms of the effect of the delay, rather than merely in terms of the length of delay, it should have been obvious that Doggett’s situation raised no issues within the traditional scope of the Speedy Trial Clause. When a defendant is not subject to restraints on his freedom or the anxiety accompanying knowledge of an indictment’s existence, the Sixth Amendment is not implicated, and protection must come from due process guarantees. By applying speedy trial analysis to a situation in which the defendant is not harmed by the delay between his indictment and arrest, the Court has created a bright-line standard for determining speedy trial violations that focus solely on time. This transformation of the Speedy Trial Clause encourages judicial paternalism by forcing courts to second-guess and oversee the government’s prosecutorial efforts

    Genetic Influences on Educational Achievement in Cross-National Perspective

    There is a growing interest in how social conditions moderate genetic influences on education [gene–environment interactions (GxE)]. Previous research has focused on the family, specifically parents’ social background, and has neglected the institutional environment. To assess the impact of macro-level influences, we compare genetic influences on educational achievement and their social stratification across Germany, Norway, Sweden, and the United States. We combine well-established GxE-conceptualizations with the comparative stratification literature and propose that educational systems and welfare-state regimes affect the realization of genetic potential. We analyse population-representative survey data on twins (Germany and the United States) and twin registers (Norway and Sweden), and estimate genetically sensitive variance decomposition models. Our comparative design yields three main findings. First, Germany stands out with comparatively weak genetic influences on educational achievement suggesting that early tracking limits the realization thereof. Second, in the United States genetic influences are comparatively strong and similar in size compared to the Nordic countries. Third, in Sweden genetic influences are stronger among disadvantaged families supporting the expectation that challenging and uncertain circumstances promote genetic expression. This ideosyncratic finding must be related to features of Swedish social institutions or welfare-state arrangements that are not found in otherwise similar countries

    Sibling Similarity in Education Across and Within Societies

    The extent to which siblings resemble each other measures the omnibus impact of family background on life chances. We study sibling similarity in cognitive skills, school grades, and educational attainment in Finland, Germany, Norway, Sweden. the United Kingdom, and the United States. We also compare sibling similarity by parental education and occupation within these societies. The comparison of sibling correlations across and within societies allows us to characterize the omnibus impact of family background on education across social landscapes. Across countries, we find larger population-level differences in sibling similarity in educational attainment than in cognitive skills and school grades. In general, sibling similarity in education varies less across countries than sibling similarity in earnings. Compared with Scandinavian countries, the United States shows more sibling similarity in cognitive skills and educational attainment but less sibling similarity in school grades. We find that socioeconomic differences in sibling similarity vary across parental resources, countries, and measures of educational success. Sweden and the United States show greater sibling similarity in educational attainment in families with a highly educated father. and Finland and Norway show greater sibling similarity in educational attainment in families with a low-educated father. We discuss the implications of our results for theories about the impact of institutions and income inequality on educational inequality and the mechanisms that underlie such inequality.Peer reviewe

    Identifying risk factors for L'Hermitte's sign after IMRT for head and neck cancer.

    BACKGROUND L’Hermitte’s sign (LS) after chemoradiotherapy for head and neck cancer appears related to higher spinal cord doses. IMRT plans limit spinal cord dose, but the incidence of LS remains high. METHODS 117 patients treated with TomoTherapy™ between 2008 and 2015 prospectively completed a side-effect questionnaire (VoxTox Trial Registration: UK CRN ID 13716). Baseline patient and treatment data were collected. Radiotherapy plans were analysed; mean and maximum spinal cord dose and volumes receiving 10, 20, 30 and 40 Gy were recorded. Dose variation across the cord was examined. These data were included in a logistic regression model. RESULTS 42 patients (35.9%) reported LS symptoms. Concurrent weekly cisplatin did not increase LS risk (p = 0.70, OR = 1.23 {95%CI 0.51 – 2.34}). Of 13 diabetic participants (9 taking metformin), only 1 developed LS (p = 0.025, OR = 0.13 {95%CI 0.051 – 3.27}). A refined binary logistic regression model showed that patients receiving unilateral radiation (p = 0.019, OR = 2.06 {95%CI 0.15 – 0.84}) were more likely to develop LS. Higher V40Gy (p = 0.047, OR = 1.06 {95%CI 1.00 – 1.12}), and younger age (mean age 56.6 vs 59.7, p = 0.060, OR = 0.96 {95%CI 0.92 – 1.00}) were associated with elevated risk of LS, with borderline significance. CONCLUSIONS In this cohort, concomitant cisplatin did not increase risk, and LS incidence was lower in diabetic patients.     Imaging Biomarkers in Prostate Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy: A Review and Clinical Trial Protocol

    Advances in imaging have changed prostate radiotherapy through improved biochemical control from focal boost and improved detection of recurrence. These advances are reviewed in the context of prostate stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) and the ARGOS/CLIMBER trial protocol. ARGOS/CLIMBER will evaluate 1) the safety and feasibility of SBRT with focal boost guided by multiparametric MRI (mpMRI) and 18F-PSMA-1007 PET and 2) imaging and laboratory biomarkers for response to SBRT. To date, response to prostate SBRT is most commonly evaluated using the Phoenix Criteria for biochemical failure. The drawbacks of this approach include lack of lesion identification, a high false-positive rate, and delay in identifying treatment failure. Patients in ARGOS/CLIMBER will receive dynamic 18F-PSMA-1007 PET and mpMRI prior to SBRT for treatment planning and at 6 and 24 months after SBRT to assess response. Imaging findings will be correlated with prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and biopsy results, with the goal of early, non-invasive, and accurate identification of treatment failure

    TTK/MPS1 inhibitor OSU-13 targets the mitotic checkpoint and is a potential therapeutic strategy for myeloma

    Despite substantial recent advances in treatment, multiple myeloma (MM) remains an incurable disease, with a shortage of treatment options for patients with high-risk disease, warranting the need for novel therapeutic targets and treatment approaches. Threonine and tyrosine kinase (TTK), also known as monopolar spindle 1 (MPS1), is a kinase essential for the mitotic spindle checkpoint whose expression correlates to unfavorable prognosis in several cancers. Here, we report the importance of TTK in MM, and the effects of the TTK inhibitor OSU-13. Elevated TTK expression correlated with amplification/ gain of 1q21 and decreased overall and event-free survival in MM. Treatment with OSU-13 inhibited TTK activity efficiently and selectively at a similar concentration range to other TTK inhibitor clinical candidates. OSU-13 reduced proliferation and viability of primary human MM cells and cell lines, especially those with high 1q21 copy numbers, and triggered apoptosis through caspase 3 and 7 activation. In addition, OSU-13 induced DNA damage and severe defects in chromosome alignment and segregation, generating aneuploidy. In vivo, OSU-13 decreased tumor growth in mice with NCI-H929 xenografts. Collectively, our findings reveal that inhibiting TTK with OSU-13 is a potential therapeutic strategy for MM, particularly for a subset of high-risk patients with poor outcome

In addition, rankings of countries in sibling resemblance differ across the three educational outcomes we study. We conclude that sibling similarity is largely similar across advanced, industrialized countries and across social groups within societies contrary to theories that suggest large cross-national differences and variation of educational mobility across social groups within societies.</p
