Interacting non-Abelian anyons as Majorana fermions in the honeycomb lattice model
We study the collective states of interacting non-Abelian anyons that emerge
in Kitaev's honeycomb lattice model. Vortex-vortex interactions are shown to
lead to the lifting of the topological degeneracy and the energy is discovered
to exhibit oscillations that are consistent with Majorana fermions being
localized at vortex cores. We show how to construct states corresponding to the
fusion channel degrees of freedom and obtain the energy gaps characterizing the
stability of the topological low energy spectrum. To study the collective
behavior of many vortices, we introduce an effective lattice model of Majorana
fermions. We find necessary conditions for it to approximate the spectrum of
the honeycomb lattice model and show that bi-partite interactions are
responsible for the degeneracy lifting also in many vortex systems.Comment: 22 pages, 12 figures, published versio
Temperature control of local magnetic anisotropy in multiferroic CoFe/BaTiO3
This paper reports on the temperature evolution of local elastic interactions between ferromagnetic CoFe films and ferroelectric BaTiO3 substrates. Polarization microscopy measurements indicate that growth-induced stripe domains in the CoFe films are preserved and strengthened during cooling and heating through the structural phase transitions of BaTiO3. Moreover, rotation of the magnetic easy axes at the tertragonal-to-orthorhombic transition (T = 278 K) and at T ≈ 380 K simultaneously switches the local magnetization of both uniaxial domains by 90° . Irreversible changes in the ferromagnetic domain pattern are induced when the room-temperature ferroelectric domain structure is altered after temperature cycling.Peer reviewe
Field Tuning of Ferromagnetic Domain Walls on Elastically Coupled Ferroelectric Domain Boundaries
We report on the evolution of ferromagnetic domain walls during magnetization
reversal in elastically coupled ferromagnetic-ferroelectric heterostructures.
Using optical polarization microscopy and micromagnetic simulations, we
demonstrate that the spin rotation and width of ferromagnetic domain walls can
be accurately controlled by the strength of the applied magnetic field if the
ferromagnetic walls are pinned onto 90 degrees ferroelectric domain boundaries.
Moreover, reversible switching between magnetically charged and uncharged
domain walls is initiated by magnetic field rotation. Switching between both
wall types reverses the wall chirality and abruptly changes the width of the
ferromagnetic domain walls by up to 1000%.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
‘To me, it's like a little box of tricks’: Breaking the depressive interlock as a programme participant in mindfulness-based cognitive therapy
Objectives. Mindfulness meditation practices have become increasingly popular in clinical therapies, changing patterns of depressogenic thinking for individuals who experience consecutive episodes of depression. We were interested in finding out how Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) worked for programme participants by focussing on how meditative practices changed their relationships to their thoughts.
Design. Data for the study came from six semi-structured research interviews carried out with individuals who had taken part in an 8 week MBCT programme
Methods. We used Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) to analyse the experiential accounts.
Results. We report on two superordinate themes – Engaging the Neutral Mind (with subordinate themes ‘breaking the paralysis of worry’ and ‘choosing to think differently’) and Experiencing the Neutral Mind (with subordinate themes of ‘reflection on previous thinking styles’ and ‘becoming psychologically self-reliant’).
Conclusions. Themes from the present study offer support to the assertion that mindfulness meditation helps facilitate a different mode of meta-cognitive processing with which to handle depression-related cognitions.
Practitioner Points
Participants reported that they experienced an enhanced capacity to differentiate between their thought processes, experiencing an ability to tolerate some more uncomfortable thoughts and experiencing a/more choice in how to respond to thoughts
Participants recognised that ruminating over negative thoughts was related to depressive states and experienced a shift in meta-cognitive processes that actively challenged depressogenic cognitions
Participants became more psychologically self-reliant and therapeutically independent following MBCT
Integrating mindfulness based practices in therapy may be a mediating factor in sustaining psychological wellbeing and may help clients develop self-compassion
Future research looks to examining exit cases to understand elements of MBCT which are experienced as less successful by client
Rigorous Calculations of Non-Abelian Statistics in the Kitaev Honeycomb Model
We develop a rigorous and highly accurate technique for calculation of the
Berry phase in systems with a quadratic Hamiltonian within the context of the
Kitaev honeycomb lattice model. The method is based on the recently found
solution of the model which uses the Jordan-Wigner-type fermionization in an
exact effective spin-hardcore boson representation. We specifically simulate
the braiding of two non-Abelian vortices (anyons) in a four vortex system
characterized by a two-fold degenerate ground state. The result of the braiding
is the non-Abelian Berry matrix which is in excellent agreement with the
predictions of the effective field theory. The most precise results of our
simulation are characterized by an error on the order of or lower. We
observe exponential decay of the error with the distance between vortices,
studied in the range from one to nine plaquettes. We also study its correlation
with the involved energy gaps and provide preliminary analysis of the relevant
adiabaticity conditions. The work allows to investigate the Berry phase in
other lattice models including the Yao-Kivelson model and particularly the
square-octagon model. It also opens the possibility of studying the Berry phase
under non-adiabatic and other effects which may constitute important sources of
errors in topological quantum computation.Comment: 27 pages, 9 figures, 3 appendice
Entisen pysäköintikentän tilalle rakentuva alue A käsittää monipuolisten toimintojen korttelin, jonka jalustakerroksessa sijaitsee muun muassa päiväkoti, kauppa ja toimistotilaa. Jalustan päälle on istutettu kahdeksan energiatehokasta asuinkerrostaloa ja niille yhteiset pihatoiminnot. Alueen A pistetalojen ratkaisuja kehitettiin detaljitasolle asti.
Suunnittelun keskeisiä teemoja ovat olleet korkea energiatehokkuus, ennakkoluulottomat arkkitehtoniset ratkaisut ja psykologisilta vaikutuksiltaan suotuisan kaupunkiympäristön luominen puuta hyödyntäen. Työn nimi VESA viittaa uuteen kasvuun vanhan pohjalta

Exact Chiral Spin Liquids and Mean-Field Perturbations of Gamma Matrix Models on the Ruby Lattice
We theoretically study an exactly solvable Gamma matrix generalization of the
Kitaev spin model on the ruby lattice, which is a honeycomb lattice with
"expanded" vertices and links. We find this model displays an exceptionally
rich phase diagram that includes: (i) gapless phases with stable spin fermi
surfaces, (ii) gapless phases with low-energy Dirac cones and quadratic band
touching points, and (iii) gapped phases with finite Chern numbers possessing
the values {\pm}4,{\pm}3,{\pm}2 and {\pm}1. The model is then generalized to
include Ising-like interactions that break the exact solvability of the model
in a controlled manner. When these terms are dominant, they lead to a trivial
Ising ordered phase which is shown to be adiabatically connected to a large
coupling limit of the exactly solvable phase. In the limit when these
interactions are weak, we treat them within mean-field theory and present the
resulting phase diagrams. We discuss the nature of the transitions between
various phases. Our results highlight the richness of possible ground states in
closely related magnetic systems.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figure
