    Crowdsourcing platform for QoE evaluation for cloud multimedia services

    This paper presents a novel web-based crowdsourcing platform for the assessment of the subjective and objective quality of experience (QoE) of the video service in the cloud-server environment. The user has the option to enter subjective QoE data for video service by filling out a web questionnaire. The objective QoE data of the cloud-server, network condition, and the user device is automatically captured by the crowdsourcing platform. Our proposed system collects both objective and subjective QoE simultaneously in real-time. The paper presents the key technologies used in the development of the platform and describes the functional requirements and design ideas of the system in detail. The system collects real-time comprehensive data to enhance the quality of the user experience to provide a valuable reference. The system is tested in a real-time environment and the test results are given in terms of the system performance. The crowdsourcing platform has new features of real-time network monitoring, the client device, and cloud monitoring, which currently has not been provided by existing web platforms and crowdsourcing frameworks. The results show that 1MB buffer is filled 100% very soon after starting watching videos from the crowdsourcing platform.</jats:p

    High temperature dielectric properties of Apical, Kapton, Peek, Teflon AF, and Upilex polymers

    Reliable lightweight systems capable of providing electrical power at the magawatt level are a requirement for future manned space exploration missions. This can be achieved by the development of high temperature insulating materials which are not only capable of surviving the hostile space environment but can contribute to reducing the mass and weight of the heat rejection system. In this work, Apical, Upilex, Kapton, Teflon AF, and Peek polymers are characterized for AC and DC dielectric breakdown in air and in silicone oil at temperatures up to 250 C. The materials are also tested in terms of their dielectric constant and dissipation factor at high temperatures with an electrical stress of 60 Hz, 200 V/mil present. The effects of thermal aging on the properties of the films are determined after 15 hours of exposure to 200 and 250 C, each. The results obtained are discussed and conclusions are made concerning the suitability of these dielectrics for use in capacitors and cable insulations in high temperature environments

    In-situ growth of nonstoichiometric CrO0.87 and Co3O4 hybrid system for the enhanced electrocatalytic water splitting in alkaline media

    The development of electrocatalysts for electrochemical water splitting has received considerable attention in response to the growing demand for renewable energy sources and environmental concerns. In this study, a simple hydrothermal growth approach was developed for the in-situ growth of non-stoichiometric CrO0.87 and Co3O4 hybrid materials. It is apparent that the morphology of the prepared material shows a heterogeneous aggregate of irregularly shaped nanoparticles. Both CrO0.87 and Co3O4 have cubic crystal structures. Its chemical composition was governed by the presence of Co, Cr, and O as its main constituents. For understanding the role CrO0.87 plays in the half-cell oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline conditions, CrO0.87 was optimized into Co3O4 nanostructures. The hybrid material with the highest concentration of CrO0.87 was found to be highly efficient at driving OER reactions at 255 mV and 20 mA cm−2. The optimized material demonstrated excellent durability for 45 h and a Tafel slope of 56 mV dec−1. Several factors may explain the outstanding performance of CrO0.87 and Co3O4 hybrid materials, including multiple metallic oxidation states, tailored surface properties, fast charge transport, and surface defects.     Carbon sequestration potential and physicochemical properties differ between wildfire charcoals and slow-pyrolysis biochars

    Pyrogenic carbon (PyC), produced naturally (wildfire charcoal) and anthropogenically (biochar), is extensively studied due to its importance in several disciplines, including global climate dynamics, agronomy and paleosciences. Charcoal and biochar are commonly used as analogues for each other to infer respective carbon sequestration potentials, production conditions, and environmental roles and fates. The direct comparability of corresponding natural and anthropogenic PyC, however, has never been tested. Here we compared key physicochemical properties (elemental composition, δ13C and PAHs signatures, chemical recalcitrance, density and porosity) and carbon sequestration potentials of PyC materials formed from two identical feedstocks (pine forest floor and wood) under wildfire charring- and slow-pyrolysis conditions. Wildfire charcoals were formed under higher maximum temperatures and oxygen availabilities, but much shorter heating durations than slow-pyrolysis biochars, resulting in differing physicochemical properties. These differences are particularly relevant regarding their respective roles as carbon sinks, as even the wildfire charcoals formed at the highest temperatures had lower carbon sequestration potentials than most slow-pyrolysis biochars. Our results challenge the common notion that natural charcoal and biochar are well suited as proxies for each other, and suggest that biochar’s environmental residence time may be underestimated when based on natural charcoal as a proxy, and vice versa

    Effects of hospital facilities on patient outcomes after cancer surgery: an international, prospective, observational study

    Background Early death after cancer surgery is higher in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) compared with in high-income countries, yet the impact of facility characteristics on early postoperative outcomes is unknown. The aim of this study was to examine the association between hospital infrastructure, resource availability, and processes on early outcomes after cancer surgery worldwide.Methods A multimethods analysis was performed as part of the GlobalSurg 3 study-a multicentre, international, prospective cohort study of patients who had surgery for breast, colorectal, or gastric cancer. The primary outcomes were 30-day mortality and 30-day major complication rates. Potentially beneficial hospital facilities were identified by variable selection to select those associated with 30-day mortality. Adjusted outcomes were determined using generalised estimating equations to account for patient characteristics and country-income group, with population stratification by hospital.Findings Between April 1, 2018, and April 23, 2019, facility-level data were collected for 9685 patients across 238 hospitals in 66 countries (91 hospitals in 20 high-income countries; 57 hospitals in 19 upper-middle-income countries; and 90 hospitals in 27 low-income to lower-middle-income countries). The availability of five hospital facilities was inversely associated with mortality: ultrasound, CT scanner, critical care unit, opioid analgesia, and oncologist. After adjustment for case-mix and country income group, hospitals with three or fewer of these facilities (62 hospitals, 1294 patients) had higher mortality compared with those with four or five (adjusted odds ratio [OR] 3.85 [95% CI 2.58-5.75]; p&lt;0.0001), with excess mortality predominantly explained by a limited capacity to rescue following the development of major complications (63.0% vs 82.7%; OR 0.35 [0.23-0.53]; p&lt;0.0001). Across LMICs, improvements in hospital facilities would prevent one to three deaths for every 100 patients undergoing surgery for cancer.Interpretation Hospitals with higher levels of infrastructure and resources have better outcomes after cancer surgery, independent of country income. Without urgent strengthening of hospital infrastructure and resources, the reductions in cancer-associated mortality associated with improved access will not be realised
