The Boondocks: Archetypes of Black Masculinity in a White World
With American society being dominated and shaped by white men, black masculinity takes on new shapes and forms as black men seek survival within their surroundings. Through The Boondocks, a comic strip that has been syndicated into a TV show, five different archetypes of black masculinity take the spotlight through the main characters in a satirical world virtually void of black women in emphasis of the dynamics of black men. Huey is a revoluntionary, Riley is a Hip-Hop culturist, Grandad is a conformist, Tom is a traitor, and Uncle Ruckus is self-hating. No two methods to survival in white suburbia are the same, but what is shared is the collective need for the survival of the black community, in that the characters never stop looking out for each other regardless of the stark differences in how they express their black masculinity

The cardiomyocyte cell cycle
Many forms of cardiac disease are characterized by cardiomyocyte death due to necrosis, apoptosis and/or oncosis. Recently, the notion of promoting cardiac regeneration as a means to replace damaged heart tissue has engendered considerable interest. One approach to accomplish heart muscle regeneration entails promoting cardiomyocyte cell cycle activity in the surviving myocardium. Genetically modified mice have provided useful model systems to test the efficacy of specific pathways to promote cardiomyocyte proliferation in normal and diseased hearts. For example, expression of a heart-restricted dominant interfering version of p193 (an E3 ubiquitin ligase also known as Cul7) resulted in an induction of cardiomyocyte cell cycle activity at the infarct border zone and ventricular septum 4 weeks after permanent coronary artery occlusion. A concomitant reduction in hypertrophic cardiomyocyte growth was also observed in this model, suggesting that cell cycle activation partially counteracted the adverse ventricular remodeling that occurs postinfarction. In other studies, targeted expression of cyclin D2 promoted cardiomyocyte cell cycle activity in adult hearts. The level of cardiomyocyte cell cycle activity increased after myocardial infarction, ultimately resulting in a marked increase in cardiomyocyte number and a concomitant regression of infarct size. Collectively, these data suggest that modulation of cardiomyocyte cell cycle activity can be exploited to promote regenerative growth in injured hearts
The CUL7 E3 Ubiquitin Ligase Targets Insulin Receptor Substrate 1 for Ubiquitin-Dependent Degradation
Recent genetic studies have documented a pivotal growth regulatory role played by the Cullin 7 (CUL7) E3 ubiquitin ligase complex containing the Fbw8-substrate-targeting subunit, Skp1, and the ROC1 RING finger protein. In this report, we identified insulin receptor substrate 1 (IRS-1), a critical mediator of the insulin/insulin-like growth factor 1 signaling, as a proteolytic target of the CUL7 E3 ligase in a manner that depends on mammalian target of rapamycin and the p70 S6 kinase activities. Interestingly, while embryonic fibroblasts of Cul7-/- mice were found to accumulate IRS-1 and exhibit increased activation of IRS-1âs downstream Akt and MEK/ERK pathways, these null cells grew poorly and displayed phenotypes reminiscent of those associated with oncogene-induced senescence. Taken together, our findings demonstrate a key role for the CUL7 E3 in targeting IRS-1 for degradation, a process that may contribute to the regulation of cellular senescence
Gentleman : a lightweight web-based projectional editor

Cette caractĂ©ristique doit aussi sâĂ©tendre aux outils que nous employons aïŹn que ceux-ci augmentent nos capacitĂ©s, plutĂŽt que les restreindre. En gĂ©nie logiciel, nous travaillons prĂ©sentement Ă rehausser encore le niveau dâabstraction aïŹn de rĂ©duire le rĂŽle central du code dĂ©crit avec un langage de programmation Ă usage gĂ©nĂ©ral. Ceci permettrait dâinclure les experts non techniques dans les activitĂ©s de dĂ©veloppement de logiciel. Cette approche, centralisĂ©e sur le domaine et lâexpert, sâinscrit dans lâingĂ©nierie dirigĂ©e par les modĂšles (IDM), oĂč un modĂšle est produit et manipulĂ© par divers experts et utilisateurs. web.In software activities and, more specifically, when modeling, the modeler should benefit from as much freedom as possible to understand the presented information and take action with minimal cognitive and mechanical effort. This characteristic should also apply to the tools used in the process so that they extend our capabilities rather than limit them. In the field of software engineering, current work aims to push the level of abstraction past general-purpose programming language into domain-specific modeling. This enables domain experts with various backgrounds to participate in software development activities. This vision is central to model-driven engineering (MDE) where, instead of code, various experts and users produce and manipulate domain-specific language (DSL). In recent years, projectional editing has proven to be a valid approach to creating and manipulating DSLs, as it supports various easily interchangeable notations and enables language extension and composition. However, current solutions are heavyweight, platform-specific, and suffer from poor usability.
To better support this paradigm and minimize the risk of accidental complexity in terms of expressiveness, in this thesis, we introduce Gentleman, a lightweight web-based projectional editor. With Gentleman, a developer creates a model by combining concepts used to define its structure and projections to interact and manipulate them in the editor. We have evaluated Gentleman through a user study. The evaluation confirmed its capacity to create and manipulate models effectively. Most participants noted that the editor is very user-friendly and intuitive compared to existing editors. We have also successfully integrated Gentleman into a web application, demonstrating its interoperability and the benefit of a web solution
Impact of Acculturation on Body Mass Index in Haitians
Longer term immigrants residing in the United States exhibit physical health decline related to higher body mass index (BMI). Theories on immigrant acculturation have been used to examine health patterns by length of stay in the United States. The purpose of this cross-sectional study, guided by the Schwartz model of acculturation, was to examine the effect of acculturation and length of stay in the United States on BMI in a sample of Haitian immigrants living in a northeast metropolitan area. The research question was developed to examine the effects of acculturation and how long immigrants reside in the United States on BMI. The Participants included a convenience sample of 116 Haitian men and women, aged 18 years and older, who had relocated to the United States for 3 years or more. Data were collected using a demographic questionnaire and medical records from a participating health clinic and then analyzed by conducting multiple linear regression statistical analyses. Results revealed that acculturation, length of stay in the United States, age, gender, and physical activity were not significant predictors of BMI change. An ancillary analysis using the subscales of acculturation revealed similar results. This study may provide positive social change by enabling health providers to understand the beliefs, values, and practices of Haitian immigrant groups and the acculturation pattern of individuals when providing care for this population
Cardiac Myocyte Diversity and a Fibroblast Network in the Junctional Region of the Zebrafish Heart Revealed by Transmission and Serial Block-Face Scanning Electron Microscopy
The zebrafish has emerged as an important model of heart development and regeneration. While the structural characteristics of the developing and adult zebrafish ventricle have been previously studied, little attention has been paid to the nature of the interface between the compact and spongy myocardium. Here we describe how these two distinct layers are structurally and functionally integrated. We demonstrate by transmission electron microscopy that this interface is complex and composed primarily of a junctional region occupied by collagen, as well as a population of fibroblasts that form a highly complex network. We also describe a continuum of uniquely flattened transitional cardiac myocytes that form a circumferential plate upon which the radially-oriented luminal trabeculae are anchored. In addition, we have uncovered within the transitional ring a subpopulation of markedly electron dense cardiac myocytes. At discrete intervals the transitional cardiac myocytes form contact bridges across the junctional space that are stabilized through localized desmosomes and fascia adherentes junctions with adjacent compact cardiac myocytes. Finally using serial block-face scanning electron microscopy, segmentation and volume reconstruction, we confirm the three-dimensional nature of the junctional region as well as the presence of the sheet-like fibroblast network. These ultrastructural studies demonstrate the previously unrecognized complexity with which the compact and spongy layers are structurally integrated, and provide a new basis for understanding development and regeneration in the zebrafish heart
