    Tests d'évaluation du degré de pollution des sédiments marins : effets sur la production de larves et la consommation d'algues chez le copépode Tigriopus brevicornis

    L'eau interstitielle ou l'eau de lessivage d'un sédiment est mise en contact avec des lots de 50 femelles ovigères du copépode Tigriopus brevicornis. Notons que ce microcrustacé marin est sensible à la pollution mais résistant aux caractéristiques physico-chimiques des types d'eaux testés (salinité et température notamment). On évalue ensuite les effets de ces eaux sur la production larvaire en 10 jours et sur l'ingestion en 4 jours par les copépodes d'une suspension de Phaeodactylum tricornutum. Nous observons ici, pour des lots de sédiments provenant de la région de Marseille, des réductions de la production de larves variant de 61 % (Les Embiez) à 90 % (Vaine). Le test "consommation d'algues", bien moins sensible aboutit pour les mêmes stations à des réductions de 19 % à 35 %. Le test "production larvaire" du fait de sa plus grande sensibilité doit être préféré au test "consommation d'algues".Most pollutants discharged into the sea are found in sediments, generally after temporary fixation in planktonic organisms. The slightest discharge leaves a trace in the soft bottoms. Thus, it may be said that these behave as good "data storage indicators" testifying to the degree of pollution present. Sediments therefore represent a privileged field in research on the state of pollution in the aquatic ecosystem. How can the degree of pollution in this field be evaluated?A chemical analysis of pollutants in sediments is a good means of investigation to detect of degradation in the quality of waters. Most pollutants however are difficult to detect and dose. Moreover, in many cases dosage is tedious and costly. It is from this point of view that biological assays were considered essential.Interstitial water or water used to wash a sediment was placed in contact with batches of 50 ovigerous females of the copepod Tigriopus brevicornis. This marine microcrustacean is known to be sensitive to pollution, though resisting the physical and chemical effects of the waters tested (salinity and temperature, in particular). An evaluation was the made on the effects of these waters; first on larval production during a period of ten days, and then on ingestion by copepeds of a suspension of Pheodactylum tricornutum for four days.The results obtained here with batches of sediment from the Marseilles region show that the larval production test is the most sensitive one. Indeed, the inhibition percentages found by the larval production test range from 35 to 100 % (figure 1), whereas they vary from 5 to 55 % with the algae consumption test (figure 2). With the larval production test, it is possible to classify sediments according to their ecological quality.From this test, moreover, the presence of harmful substances in the sediments can be rapidly detected. Being reproductible and not expensive, it supplements the far too restrictive traditional chemical analyses. When applied to estuarine sedimentary zones, combined with other tests, it should help establish a quality coefficient for sediments based on experimentation

    La bioévaluation de l'état de santé des fonds meubles dépend des conditions expérimentales du traitement des échantillons de sédiment conduisant à l'obtention de la phase aqueuse sur laquelle sont effectuées les analyses chimiques et toxicologiques.Au cours de cette étude préliminaire nous avons considéré l'action de ces principales conditions ; nous constatons que l'effet inhibiteur d'un sédiment vis-à-vis de la croissance à court terme de la micro-algue Selenastrum capricornutum Printz n'est pas aisément levé, que ce soit par lessivages successifs du sédiment, par filtration plus fine de l'eau extraite à partir de ce dernier ou par autoclavage préalable de ce même sédiment, il peut l'être par contre après biodégradation.Cette étude expérimentale a permis de comparer entre eux les pouvoirs inhibiteurs des fonds meubles de la Seine (région parisienne).On note qu'il n'y a pas de corrélation entre les teneurs en métaux lourds souvent importantes des eaux issues des sédiments (Pb 70, Cu 100, Cr 150, Cd 9, Ni 280, Zn 400 µg.L-1) et le développement des algues : les polluants métalliques sont masqués par le pouvoir chélateur de ces biotopes riches en substances organiques.Une conclusion à cette étude préliminaire est que l'analyse chimique des sédiments, utilisée seule, n'a qu'un intérêt limité : les données les plus fiables correspondent à celles fournies par les bioessais.A bioevaluation of the state of health of soft bottoms depends on the experimental conditions in which samples of sediment are treated to obtain the water phase to be subjected to chemical and toxicological analyses.In the course of this preliminary study we have considered the action of these principal conditions. We have noted that the inhibiting effect of a sediment on the short-term growth of a microalga Selenastrum capricornutum is not easy to eliminate, whether by a series of washes of the sediment, by a finer filtration of the water extracted from this sediment or by e previous autoclavage of this sediment.This study quickly revealed which sediments in the River Seine (Paris area) inhibited most the test micro-alga Selenastrum capricornutum (Chlorophyceae); the cause of these inhibitions was then sought.There is no correlation between the often high content of heavy metals in the sediment water (Pb 70, Cu 100, Cr 150, Cd 9, Ni 280, Zn 400 µg.L-1) and the development of the algae; the metal pollutants are probably masked by the chelating capacity of these biotopes rich in organic substances. The experimental conditions under which the sediment samples are treated to obtain the water phase used for the chemical and toxicological analyses are also important.One conclusion drawn is that a chemical analysis alone of the sediments is of limited interest. The most reliable data from the ecological point of view are those provided by the bio-assays

    Effect of antimony on the eutectic reaction of heavy section spheroidal graphite castings

    There is a strong demand for heavy section castings made of spheroidal graphite with a fully ferritic matrix, e.g. for manufacturing hubs for windmills. Such castings with slow solidification process are prone to graphite degeneration that leads to a dramatic decrease of the mechanical properties of the cast parts. Chunky graphite is certainly the most difficult case of graphite degeneracy, though it has long been known that the limited and controlled addition of antimony may help eliminate it. The drawback of this remedy is that too large Sb additions lead to other forms of degenerate graphite, and also that antimony is a pearlite promoter. As part of an investigation aimed at mastering low level additions to cast iron melts before casting, solidification of large blocks with or without Sb added was followed by thermal analysis. Comparison of the cooling curves and of the microstructures of these different castings gives suggestions to understand the controlling nucleation and growth mechanisms for chunky graphite cells

    The free energy of the Potts model: from the continuous to the first-order transition region

    We present a large qq expansion of the 2d qq-states Potts model free energies up to order 9 in 1/q1/\sqrt{q}. Its analysis leads us to an ansatz which, in the first-order region, incorporates properties inferred from the known critical regime at q=4q=4, and predicts, for q>4q>4, the nthn^{\rm th} energy cumulant scales as the power (3n/22)(3 n /2-2) of the correlation length. The parameter-free energy distributions reproduce accurately, without reference to any interface effect, the numerical data obtained in a simulation for q=10q=10 with lattices of linear dimensions up to L=50. The pure phase specific heats are predicted to be much larger, at q10q\leq10, than the values extracted from current finite size scaling analysis of extrema.     Study of the microstructure resulting from brazed aluminium materials used in heat exchangers

    Re-solidification of AA4343 cladding after brazing as well as the related precipitation in the modified AA3003 core material have been investigated. Analysis of the re-solidified material showed that partial dissolution of the core alloy occurs in both the brazing joints and away of them. Far from the brazing joints, the dissolution is, however, limited and diffusion of silicon from the liquid into the core material leads to solid-state precipitation in the so-called “band of dense precipitates” (BDP). On the contrary, the dissolution is enhanced in the brazing joint to such an extent that no BDP could be observed. The intermetallic phases present in the resolidified areas as well as in the core material have been analyzed and found to be mainly cubic alpha-Al(Mn,Fe)Si. These results were then compared to predictions made with available phase diagram information

    Structure of smectic defect cores: an X-ray study of 8CB liquid crystal ultra-thin films

    We study the structure of very thin liquid crystal films frustrated by antagonistic anchorings in the smectic phase. In a cylindrical geometry, the structure is dominated by the defects for film thicknesses smaller than 150 nm and the detailed topology of the defects cores can be revealed by x-ray diffraction. They appear to be split in half tube-shaped Rotating Grain Boundaries (RGB). We determine the RGB spatial extension and evaluate its energy per unit line.     A logic-based diagram of signalling pathways central to macrophage activation.

    BACKGROUND: The complex yet flexible cellular response to pathogens is orchestrated by the interaction of multiple signalling and metabolic pathways. The molecular regulation of this response has been studied in great detail but comprehensive and unambiguous diagrams describing these events are generally unavailable. Four key signalling cascades triggered early-on in the innate immune response are the toll-like receptor, interferon, NF-kappaB and apoptotic pathways, which co-operate to defend cells against a given pathogen. However, these pathways are commonly viewed as separate entities rather than an integrated network of molecular interactions. RESULTS: Here we describe the construction of a logically represented pathway diagram which attempts to integrate these four pathways central to innate immunity using a modified version of the Edinburgh Pathway Notation. The pathway map is available in a number of electronic formats and editing is supported by yEd graph editor software. CONCLUSION: The map presents a powerful visual aid for interpreting the available pathway interaction knowledge and underscores the valuable contribution well constructed pathway diagrams make to communicating large amounts of molecular interaction data. Furthermore, we discuss issues with the limitations and scalability of pathways presented in this fashion, explore options for automated layout of large pathway networks and demonstrate how such maps can aid the interpretation of functional studies

    Dynamical Properties of a Haldane Gap Antiferromagnet

    We study the dynamic spin correlation function of a spin one antiferromagnetic chain with easy-plane single-ion anisotropy. We use exact diagonalization by the Lancz\H os method for chains of lengths up to N=16 spins. We show that a single-mode approximation is an excellent description of the dynamical properties. A variational calculation allows us to clarify the nature of the excitations. The existence of a two-particle continuum near zero wavevector is clearly seen both in finite-size effects and in the dynamical structure factor. The recent neutron scattering experiments on the quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet NENP are fully explained by our results.Comment: 14 pages, SphT/92-135 plain tex with Postscript figures included.     Relationship between casting modulus and grain size in cast A356 aluminium alloys

    Microstructure of Al-Si alloy castings depends most generally on melt preparation and on the cooling rate imposed by the thermal modulus of the component. In the case of Al-Si alloys, emphasis is put during melt preparation on refinement of pro-eutectic (Al) grains and on modification of the Al-Si eutectic. Thermal analysis has been used since long to check melt preparation before casting, i.e. by analysis of the cooling curve during solidification of a sample cast in an instrumented cup. The conclusions drawn from such analysis are however valid for the particular cooling conditions of the cups. It thus appeared of interest to investigate how these conclusions could extrapolate to predict microstructure in complicated cast parts showing local changes in the solidification conditions. For that purpose, thermal analysis cups and instrumented sand and die castings with different thermal moduli and thus cooling rates have been made, and the whole set of cooling curves thus recorded has been analysed. A statistical analysis of the characteristic features of the cooling curves related to grain refinement in sand and die castings allowed determining the most significant parameters and expressing the cube of grain size as a polynomial of these parameters. After introduction of a further parameter quantifying melt refining an excellent correlation, with a R2 factor of 0.99 was obtained

    International audienceLes questions relatives à la disponibilité et à la gestion de l'eau concentreront l'essentiel des mesures d'adaptation qui seront prises dans les décennies à venir pour faire face aux conséquences des changements climatiques. Ces mesures devront également prendre en compte les évolutions socio-économiques, en termes de démographie, d'aménagement du territoire et de politiques publiques (agriculture, énergie, transports, etc.). Il est dès lors primordial pour les décideurs et gestionnaires de quantifier les évolutions socio-économiques possibles, ainsi que le devenir de la ressource en eau et de sa variabilité temporelle et spatiale. C'est dans ce contexte que le projet Explore2070 avait pour objectif d'évaluer les impacts possibles des changements climatiques et socio-économiques futurs sur les grandes masses d'eau (surface, souterrain, littoral) et la biodiversité, en France métropolitaine et sur les départements d'Outre-mer (Guadeloupe, Guyane, Martinique et Réunion). Piloté par le Ministère de l'Ecologie (MEDDTL), ce projet a rassemblé de nombreux bureaux d'études et instituts de recherche pour dresser un panorama général des évolutions à attendre à l'horizon 2070. Par son ampleur et la variété de ses objectifs, ce projet doit permettre de répondre à de nombreuses questions des gestionnaires et de mieux apprécier les enjeux de ces évolutions. Dans la suite, nous présentons les travaux réalisés spécifiquement sur la quantification des évolutions des eaux de surface. Nous détaillerons dans ce qui suit la démarche générale de modélisation proposée, la nature des résultats obtenus, ainsi que la façon dont les incertitudes ont été quantifiées. Ce dernier point est indispensable pour aider à la prise de décision dans un avenir incertain. / Water availability and water management will be the focus of most of the adaptation measures that will be taken in the next decades to face the consequences of climate change. These measures will have to account for the socio-economic evolutions, in terms of population size, town and country planning, as well as public policies (agriculture, energy, transports, etc.). It is therefore essential for decision makers and managers to be able to quantify the possible socio-economic evolutions together with the evolution of water resources and their temporal and spatial variability. In this context, the Explore2070 project aimed at evaluating the possible impacts of future climate and socio-economic changes on water bodies (surface water, groundwater and coastal water) and biodiversity, in metropolitan France and overseas departments (Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guyana, and Réunion Island). The project was managed by the French Ministry of Ecology (MEDDTL) and gathered several consultancies and research institutes to establish a general overview of the expected evolutions by 2070. Through both the extent and the variety of the project’s objectives, Explore2070 will provide answers to many questions raised by managers and better evaluate the stakes related to these evolutions. In the following, we present the work done specifically to quantify the evolution of surface water. The general modelling approach, the type of results and the way uncertainties were quantified are detailed. Uncertainty quantification is essential to help decision making in an uncertain future
