    Drivers for universities’ contribution to the sustainable development goals: An analysis of Spanish public universities

    Universities have a critical role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), both for implementing active policies and for encouraging other actors to participate. This requires having the skills and mind-sets to contribute to these challenges. The relevance and the commitment of universities to sustainability has led to the inclusion of SDGs in the strategies and agendas of these institutions. This requires the involvement of all the actors and some structural and cultural changes that put SDGs at the core of the governance and management of the university, embracing all the stakeholders. Various internal and external factors may influence the impact and success of the policies and activities aiming at achieving the SDGs, both from an overall perspective and for individual SDGs. This paper assesses the influence of some internal factors, such as the presence of universities on the internet, the level of internationalization or the availability of financial resources. Through both regression analyses and the Gephi method, our results confirm the importance of the presence on the internet, the internationalization of the university and the financial resources for research and infrastructure received from regional governments for Spanish public universities to make a greater contribution to SDGs

    Real-time pcr method combined with a matrix lysis procedure for the quantification of listeria monocytogenes in meat products

    In this study a real-time PCR method has been developed for the specific quantification of the foodborne pathogen Listeria monocytogenes on meat products through the gene hlyA. The PCR was combined with a matrix lysis that allowed the obtaining of the microorganisms without sample dilution and the elimination the PCR inhibitors from dry-cured ham. The qPCR method calibration curve had an efficiency of 100.4%, limits of detection and quantification were 30.1 ± 6.2 CFU/g which is under the legal limit of L. monocytogenes in ready-to-eat products, and an analytical variability <0.25 log hlyA gene copies/reaction. The analysis was performed simultaneously with the reference method ISO 11290-2. The comparison of the qPCR-matrix lysis results with the reference method showed an excellent correspondence, with a relative accuracy between 95.83–105.20%. Finally, the method was applied to commercial derived meat samples and the pathogen was quantified in one of the commercial samples assayed in 69.1 ± 13.9 CFU/g while the reference method did not quantify it. The optimized qPCR showed higher precision and sensitivity than the reference method at low concentrations of the microorganism in a shorter time. Therefore, qPCR-matrix lysis shows a potential application in the meat industry for L. monocytogenes routine control. © 2021 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland

    The effects of lightning-produced NO<sub>x</sub> and its vertical distribution on atmospheric chemistry: sensitivity simulations with MATCH-MPIC

    The impact of different assumptions concerning the source magnitude as well as the vertical placement of lightning-produced nitrogen oxides is studied using the global chemistry transport model MATCH-MPIC. The responses of NO<sub>x</sub>, O<sub>3</sub>, OH, HNO<sub>3</sub> and peroxyacetyl-nitrate (PAN) are investigated. A marked sensitivity to both parameters is found. NO<sub>x</sub> burdens globally can be enhanced by up to 100% depending on the vertical placement and source magnitude strength. In all cases, the largest enhancements occur in the tropical upper troposphere, where lifetimes of most trace gases are longer and where they thus become more susceptible to long-range transport by large-scale circulation patterns. Comparison with observations indicate that 0 and 20 Tg(N)/yr production rates of NO<sub>x</sub> from lightning are too low and too high, respectively. However, no single intermediate production rate or vertical distribution can be singled out as best fitting the observations, due to the large scatter in the datasets.     STEREO and ACE Observations of Energetic Particles from Corotating Interaction Regions

    Since early 2007, significant particle enhancements due to corotating interaction regions (CIRs) have regularly appeared at 1 AU without any appreciable contamination from solar energetic particles (SEPs). In 2009 the prevalence of CIRs diminished as the maximum speed of the high speed solar wind streams in the ecliptic decreased along with the tilt of the heliospheric current sheet. Observations of CIR time profiles at different longitudes from STEREO show delays between the Behind and Ahead spacecraft that are often roughly as expected from the corotation time lag, although small differences in the spacecraft latitudes introduce significant scatter in the time delays. In some cases different features seen at Ahead and Behind suggest that transient disturbances in the solar wind may alter connection to or transport from the shock, or that temporal changes occur in the CIR shock itself. H and He data from STEREO/LET at 1.8–6 MeV/nucleon show that 1) the CIR spectral index at these energies is ~−4, independent of intensity but with considerable variability, 2) the He/H ratio is ~0.03 for larger CIRs but varies systematically with energy and event intensity, and 3) although the correlation between the CIR MeV particle increases and solar wind speed is generally good, many times a high-speed stream is not associated with MeV particles, while at other times a recurring series of CIR particle increases appears only at higher energies and may be associated with current sheet crossings and low speed solar wind

    Understanding the optical responses of leaf nitrogen in Mediterranean Holm oak (Quercus ilex) using field spectroscopy

    The direct estimation of nitrogen (N) in fresh vegetation is challenging due to its weak influence on leaf reflectance and the overlaps with absorption features of other compounds. Different empirical models relate in this work leaf nitrogen concentration ([N]Leaf) on Holm oak to leaf reflectance as well as derived spectral indices such as normalized difference indices (NDIs), the three bands indices (TBIs) and indices previously used to predict leaf N and chlorophyll. The models were calibrated and assessed their accuracy, robustness and the strength of relationship when other biochemicals were considered. Red edge was the spectral region most strongly correlated with [N]Leaf, whereas most of the published spectral indexes did not provide accurate estimations. NDIs and TBIs based models could achieve robust and acceptable accuracies (TBI1310,1720,730: R2 = 0.76, [0.64,0.86]; RMSE (%) = 9.36, [7.04,12.83]). These models sometimes included indices with bands close to absorption features of N bonds or nitrogenous compounds, but also of other biochemicals. Models were independently and inter-annually validated using the bootstrap method, which allowed discarding those models non-robust across different years.     Comparative evaluation of impedanciometry combined with chromogenic agars or RNA hybridization and real-time PCR methods for the detection of L. monocytogenes in dry-cured ham

    Listeria monocytogenes is an important foodborne pathogen of particular relevance in “Ready To Eat” products. Food producers require rapid methods to detect L. monocytogenes, since the reference method (ISO 11290-1) is laborious, lengthy and costly. The aim of this study was to evaluate three alternative methods to detect L. monocytogenes in dry-cured ham following the ISO 16140-2:2016 standard: (A) impedance measurement followed by plating onto chromogenic agars; (B) impedance measurement followed by RNA hybridization, and (C) real-time PCR. Inclusivity and exclusivity were evaluated. The limits of detection 50 (LOD50) and the relative limits of detection (RLOD) were obtained by analysing dry-cured ham samples inoculated with L. monocytogenes at three different levels of contamination. The sensitivity study of alternative methods, as well as the relative specificity (SP), sensitivity (SE), and Kappa Cohen''s index were calculated analysing 93 samples of sliced dry-cured ham. The inclusivity and exclusivity tests of three methods showed no interference in pathogen detection. LOD50 were very low for the three methods evaluated (&lt;1 cfu/25 g dry-cured ham). The RLOD values of the three alternative methods were below the acceptability limit established by ISO 16140. For methods A and C, good results were obtained in the sensitivity study, as well as in the SP and SE. However, method B showed poorer results in the sensitivity study, along with lower results for SP (99.7%) and SE (79.6%), due to the occurrence of false positives and negatives in samples with presence of other Listeria spp. Methods A and C were considered to be a thoroughly appropriate control tool for use in the meat industry to improve the detection of L. monocytogenes
