The distributional consequences of a tax reform on a VAT for Pakistan

To what extent do rich or poor lose or gain from different tax reform packages ? The authors compare the consequences of different options by analyzing actual patterns of consumption and production. Pakistan, which relies on a narrow tax base has difficulty ensuring that the tax system keeps pace with the growth in national income and activity, without frequent discretionary changes. These changes increase the distortions caused by cascading, with adverse effects on both exports and poor households. Many-body theory calculations of positron binding to negative ions

A many-body theory approach developed by the authors [Phys. Rev. A 70, 032720 (2004)] is applied to positron bound states and annihilation rates in atomic systems. Within the formalism, full account of virtual positronium (Ps) formation is made by summing the electron-positron ladder diagram series, thus enabling the theory to include all important many-body correlation effects in the positron problem. Numerical calculations have been performed for positron bound states with the hydrogen and halogen negative ions, also known as Ps hydride and Ps halides. The Ps binding energies of 1.118, 2.718, 2.245, 1.873 and 1.393 eV and annihilation rates of 2.544, 2.482, 1.984, 1.913 and 1.809 ns$^{-1}$, have been obtained for PsH, PsF, PsCl, PsBr and PsI, respectively.Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures, submitted to International Review of Atomic and Molecular Physic

Learning Together: Localism, Collaboration and Reflexivity in the Development of Prison and University Learning Communities

This paper engages with challenges of localism, collaboration and reflexivity in thinking about the conceptualisation and development of partnership learning communities between higher education and criminal justice institutions. Grounded in experiences of partnership working in the UK and Australia, our arguments are twofold: first, drawing on missions, policy and practice challenges, that there is a case to be made for partnership-working between higher education and criminal justice institutions; and second that, although there is a need to think about collaborative international structures, there is also a need to reflect critically on how different socio-political and cultural realities (both within and beyond national borders) might shape the particular nature of partnership working. Therefore, while warmly welcoming international collaboration in this field, we urge caution in importing or exporting different models of partnership working. We make the case, instead, for open-textured theoretical and empirical reflexivity

Qualitative Exploration of the Daily Experiences and Challenges Faced by Parents and Caregivers of Children with Tourette's Syndrome.

This article reports on a qualitative interview study with 15 parents exploring their experiences, the challenges they face and the support mechanisms they have found to be most helpful. Thematic analysis identified four core categories which represented shared experiences of the participants: coping with children’s challenging behaviours, misconceptions and lack of understanding of professionals and the lay public, negative experiences of their children’s education and lack of support and services for families with Tourette’s syndrome. The findings highlight the challenges of parenting a child with Tourette’s syndrome, particularly with respect to family life and the child’s schooling.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio
