This article examines the different roles played by field and non-field naturalists in constructing cultures of nature and in the dispute to construct scientific careers in the nineteenth century. Based on the concept of threshold experience, it looks at little-explored aspects of Peter Wilhelm Lund's paleontological work (1801-1980) in Brazil and its international impact.Este artigo considera os diferentes papéis assumidos pelos naturalistas de campo e de gabinete na construção das culturas da natureza e na disputa para a construção de carreiras científicas no século XIX. The shaping of Latin American Museums of Natural History, 1850-1990

This essay reflects upon the milieu and the character of Brazilian and Argentinean natural history museums during the second half of the nineteenth century. It argues that the museums were influenced not only by European and North American museums but by each other. Museum directors in the two countries knew each other and interacted. Some of the relationships between these museums were friendly and cooperative, but because they were in young, emerging nations, they also became deeply involved in the invention of nationality in their respective countries and interacted as rivals and competitors. Even through rivalry, however, they contributed to each other's development, as did rivalry among museums within each of the two countries. Between seas and continents: aspects of the scientific career of Hermann Von Ihering, 1850-1930

This paper covers some periods in Hermann von Ihering’s scientific trajectory: his training in zoology in Germany and Naples, his international activities based in Brazil, and his return to Germany. It deals with aspects of the formulation of his theories on land bridges. It focuses on the network of contacts he maintained with German émigrés like himself, and primarily with Florentino Ameghino, which allowed him to interact in international scientific circles. It mentions excerpts of his letters and his publications in the periods when he began corresponding with Ameghino (1890), when he travelled to Europe in search of support for his theories (1907), and when he published his book on the history of the Atlantic Ocean (1927).Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Muse

O estudo das colecções e do coleccionismo praticado por actores sociais e científicos – em contexto europeu e internacional – revela-se fundamental para entender trajectórias de intelectuais, as relações entre as ciências e nacionalismo, a circulação do conhecimento científico e a forma como estas práticas intervieram na comunicação pública das ciências. No âmbito do estudo das práticas coleccionistas de vários intelectuais portugueses que, num contexto de divulgação da cultura científica europeia fomentaram colecções privadas, pretendemos abordar a relação destes coleccionadores com as instituições científicas, reflectindo sobre o tópico da ciência na esfera pública. Resumo Apoiado na literatura norte-americana, este artigo introduz uma visão geral dos estudos feministas da ciência, no que se refere à crítica das ciências naturais. Questiona por que até hoje a questão das mulheres e/ou gênero nas ciências tem merecido muito pouca atenção dos estudos sociais das ciências. E, para concluir, apresenta algumas perspectivas para as abordagens sobre mulheres e/ou gênero e ciências naturais no contexto da História das Ciências no Brasil. Abstract Based upon North American literature, this article presents an overview of the feminist science studies criticism of natural sciences. It questions why, until recently, the subject of women and/or gender in science has been scarcely addressed in the social studies of science.
