The California-Kepler survey. X. The radius gap as a function of stellar mass, metallicity, and age
In 2017, the California-Kepler Survey (CKS) published its first data release (DR1) of high-resolution optical spectra of 1305 planet hosts. Refined CKS planet radii revealed that small planets are bifurcated into two distinct populations, super-Earths (smaller than 1.5 R⊕) and sub-Neptunes (between 2.0 and 4.0 R⊕), with few planets in between (the "radius gap"). Several theoretical models of the radius gap predict variation with stellar mass, but testing these predictions is challenging with CKS DR1 due to its limited M⋆ range of 0.8–1.4 M⊙. Here we present CKS DR2 with 411 additional spectra and derived properties focusing on stars of 0.5–0.8 M⊙. We found that the radius gap follows Rp ∝ Pm with m = −0.10 ± 0.03, consistent with predictions of X-ray and ultraviolet- and core-powered mass-loss mechanisms. We found no evidence that m varies with M⋆. We observed a correlation between the average sub-Neptune size and M⋆. Over 0.5–1.4 M⊙, the average sub-Neptune grows from 2.1 to 2.6 R⊕, following with α = 0.25 ± 0.03. In contrast, there is no detectable change for super-Earths. These M⋆–Rp trends suggest that protoplanetary disks can efficiently produce cores up to a threshold mass of Mc, which grows linearly with stellar mass according to Mc ≈ 10 M⊕(M⋆/M⊙). There is no significant correlation between sub-Neptune size and stellar metallicity (over −0.5 to +0.5 dex), suggesting a weak relationship between planet envelope opacity and stellar metallicity. Finally, there is no significant variation in sub-Neptune size with stellar age (over 1–10 Gyr), which suggests that the majority of envelope contraction concludes after ∼1 Gyr
Transmutations and spectral parameter power series in eigenvalue problems
We give an overview of recent developments in Sturm-Liouville theory
concerning operators of transmutation (transformation) and spectral parameter
power series (SPPS). The possibility to write down the dispersion
(characteristic) equations corresponding to a variety of spectral problems
related to Sturm-Liouville equations in an analytic form is an attractive
feature of the SPPS method. It is based on a computation of certain systems of
recursive integrals. Considered as families of functions these systems are
complete in the -space and result to be the images of the nonnegative
integer powers of the independent variable under the action of a corresponding
transmutation operator. This recently revealed property of the Delsarte
transmutations opens the way to apply the transmutation operator even when its
integral kernel is unknown and gives the possibility to obtain further
interesting properties concerning the Darboux transformed Schr\"{o}dinger
operators.
We introduce the systems of recursive integrals and the SPPS approach,
explain some of its applications to spectral problems with numerical
illustrations, give the definition and basic properties of transmutation
operators, introduce a parametrized family of transmutation operators, study
their mapping properties and construct the transmutation operators for Darboux

Formation of Super-Earths
Super-Earths are the most abundant planets known to date and are
characterized by having sizes between that of Earth and Neptune, typical
orbital periods of less than 100 days and gaseous envelopes that are often
massive enough to significantly contribute to the planet's overall radius.
Furthermore, super-Earths regularly appear in tightly-packed multiple-planet
systems, but resonant configurations in such systems are rare. This chapters
summarizes current super-Earth formation theories. It starts from the formation
of rocky cores and subsequent accretion of gaseous envelopes. We follow the
thermal evolution of newly formed super-Earths and discuss their atmospheric
mass loss due to disk dispersal, photoevaporation, core-cooling and collisions.
We conclude with a comparison of observations and theoretical predictions,
highlighting that even super-Earths that appear as barren rocky cores today
likely formed with primordial hydrogen and helium envelopes and discuss some

Native aggregation as a cause of origin of temporary cellular structures needed for all forms of cellular activity, signaling and transformations
According to the hypothesis explored in this paper, native aggregation is genetically controlled (programmed) reversible aggregation that occurs when interacting proteins form new temporary structures through highly specific interactions. It is assumed that Anfinsen's dogma may be extended to protein aggregation: composition and amino acid sequence determine not only the secondary and tertiary structure of single protein, but also the structure of protein aggregates (associates). Cell function is considered as a transition between two states (two states model), the resting state and state of activity (this applies to the cell as a whole and to its individual structures). In the resting state, the key proteins are found in the following inactive forms: natively unfolded and globular. When the cell is activated, secondary structures appear in natively unfolded proteins (including unfolded regions in other proteins), and globular proteins begin to melt and their secondary structures become available for interaction with the secondary structures of other proteins. These temporary secondary structures provide a means for highly specific interactions between proteins. As a result, native aggregation creates temporary structures necessary for cell activity
Validity of instruments to assess students' travel and pedestrian safety
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Safe Routes to School (SRTS) programs are designed to make walking and bicycling to school safe and accessible for children. Despite their growing popularity, few validated measures exist for assessing important outcomes such as type of student transport or pedestrian safety behaviors. This research validated the SRTS school travel survey and a pedestrian safety behavior checklist.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Fourth grade students completed a brief written survey on how they got to school that day with set responses. Test-retest reliability was obtained 3-4 hours apart. Convergent validity of the SRTS travel survey was assessed by comparison to parents' report. For the measure of pedestrian safety behavior, 10 research assistants observed 29 students at a school intersection for completion of 8 selected pedestrian safety behaviors. Reliability was determined in two ways: correlations between the research assistants' ratings to that of the Principal Investigator (PI) and intraclass correlations (ICC) across research assistant ratings.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The SRTS travel survey had high test-retest reliability (κ = 0.97, n = 96, p < 0.001) and convergent validity (κ = 0.87, n = 81, p < 0.001). The pedestrian safety behavior checklist had moderate reliability across research assistants' ratings (ICC = 0.48) and moderate correlation with the PI (r = 0.55, p =< 0.01). When two raters simultaneously used the instrument, the ICC increased to 0.65. Overall percent agreement (91%), sensitivity (85%) and specificity (83%) were acceptable.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>These validated instruments can be used to assess SRTS programs. The pedestrian safety behavior checklist may benefit from further formative work.</p
Assessing Quality of Care of Elderly Patients Using the ACOVE Quality Indicator Set: A Systematic Review
Background: Care of the elderly is recognized as an increasingly important segment of health care. The Assessing Care Of Vulnerable Elderly (ACOVE) quality indicators (QIs) were developed to assess and improve the care of elderly patients. Objectives: The purpose of this review is to summarize studies that assess the quality of care using QIs from or based on ACOVE, in order to evaluate the state of quality of care for the reported conditions. Methods: We systematically searched MEDLINE, EMBASE and CINAHL for English-language studies indexed by February 2010. Articles were included if they used any ACOVE QIs, or adaptations thereof, for assessing the quality of care. Included studies were analyzed and relevant information was extracted. We summarized the results of these studies, and when possible generated an overall conclusion about the quality of care as measured by ACOVE for each condition, in various settings, and for each QI. Results: Seventeen studies were included with 278 QIs (original, adapted or newly developed). The quality scores showed large variation between and within conditions. Only a few conditions showed a stable pass rate range over multiple studies. Overall, pass rates for dementia (interquartile range (IQR): 11%-35%), depression (IQR: 27%-41%), osteoporosis (IQR: 34%-43%) and osteoarthritis (IQR: 29-41%) were notably low. Medication management and use (range: 81%-90%), hearing loss (77%-79%) and continuity of care (76%-80%) scored higher than other conditions. Out of the 278 QIs, 141 (50%) had mean pass rates below 50% and 121 QIs (44%) had pass rates above 50%. Twenty-three percent of the QIs scored above 75%, and 16% scored below 25%. Conclusions: Quality of care per condition varies markedly across studies. The effect of major depression on participation in preventive health care activities
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The objective of this study was to determine whether major depressive episodes (MDE) contribute to a lower rate of participation in three prevention activities: blood pressure checks, mammograms and Pap tests.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The data source for this study was the Canadian National Population Health Survey (NPHS), a longitudinal study that started in 1994 and has subsequently re-interviewed its participants every two years. The NPHS included a short form version of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI-SF) to assess past year MDE and also collected data on participation in preventive activities. Initially, we examined whether respondents with MDE in a particular year were less likely to participate in screening during that same year. In order to assess whether MDE negatively altered the pattern of participation, those successfully screened at the baseline interview in 1994 were identified and divided into cohorts depending on their MDE status. Proportional hazard models were used to quantify the effect of MDE on subsequent participation in screening.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>No effect of MDE on participation in the three preventive activities was identified either in the cross-sectional or longitudinal analysis. Adjustment for a set of relevant covariates did not alter this result.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Whereas MDE might be expected to reduce the frequency of participation in screening activities, no evidence for this was found in the current analysis. Since people with MDE may contact the health system more frequently, this may offset any tendency of the illness itself to reduce participation in screening.</p
The broad phenotypic spectrum of PPP2R1A-related neurodevelopmental disorders correlates with the degree of biochemical dysfunction
Purpose: Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD) caused by protein
phosphatase 2A (PP2A) dysfunction have mainly been associated
with de novo variants in PPP2R5D and PPP2CA, and more rarely in
PPP2R1A. Here, we aimed to better understand the latter by
characterizing 30 individuals with de novo and often recurrent
variants in this PP2A scaffolding Aα subunit.
Methods: Most cases were identified through routine clinical
diagnostics. Variants were biochemically characterized for phosphatase activity and interaction with other PP2A subunits.
Results: We describe 30 individuals with 16 different variants in
PPP2R1A, 21 of whom had variants not previously reported. The severity
of developmental delay ranged from mild learning problems to severe
intellectual disability (ID) with or without epilepsy. Common features
were language delay, hypotonia, and hypermobile joints. Macrocephaly
was only seen in individuals without B55α subunit-binding deficit, and
these patients had less severe ID and no seizures. Biochemically more
disruptive variants with impaired B55α but increased striatin binding
were associated with profound ID, epilepsy, corpus callosum hypoplasia,
and sometimes microcephaly.
Conclusion: We significantly expand the phenotypic spectrum of
PPP2R1A-related NDD, revealing a broader clinical presentation of the
patients and that the functional consequences of the variants are more
diverse than previously reported
The Circadian Clock Protein Timeless Regulates Phagocytosis of Bacteria in Drosophila
Survival of bacterial infection is the result of complex host-pathogen interactions. An often-overlooked aspect of these interactions is the circadian state of the host. Previously, we demonstrated that Drosophila mutants lacking the circadian regulatory proteins Timeless (Tim) and Period (Per) are sensitive to infection by S. pneumoniae. Sensitivity to infection can be mediated either by changes in resistance (control of microbial load) or tolerance (endurance of the pathogenic effects of infection). Here we show that Tim regulates resistance against both S. pneumoniae and S. marcescens. We set out to characterize and identify the underlying mechanism of resistance that is circadian-regulated. Using S. pneumoniae, we found that resistance oscillates daily in adult wild-type flies and that these oscillations are absent in Tim mutants. Drosophila have at least three main resistance mechanisms to kill high levels of bacteria in their hemolymph: melanization, antimicrobial peptides, and phagocytosis. We found that melanization is not circadian-regulated. We further found that basal levels of AMP gene expression exhibit time-of-day oscillations but that these are Tim-independent; moreover, infection-induced AMP gene expression is not circadian-regulated. We then show that phagocytosis is circadian-regulated. Wild-type flies exhibit up-regulated phagocytic activity at night; Tim mutants have normal phagocytic activity during the day but lack this night-time peak. Tim appears to regulate an upstream event in phagocytosis, such as bacterial recognition or activation of phagocytic hemocytes. Interestingly, inhibition of phagocytosis in wild type flies results in survival kinetics similar to Tim mutants after infection with S. pneumoniae. Taken together, these results suggest that loss of circadian oscillation of a specific immune function (phagocytosis) can have significant effects on long-term survival of infection
