    The Ethics of the New Philosophy of Invisible Marketing

    This paper introduces a new ethical debate in social and Word of Mouth (WOM) marketing. In an area where communications are developing much quicker than regulation, ethics are of great importance (Balasubramanian, 1994). We propose that a new philosophy of marketing is emerging, which we call invisible marketing, and discuss how this philosophy makes redundant existing ethics debates and places marketers in danger of being social engineers

    A stochastic schedule-following simulation model of bus routes

    Microsimulation models of bus routes allow transit operators to both better understand the dynamics of bus routes and facilitate better policy making. Several simulation models of bus routes have been proposed in the literature, including cellular-automata, bus-following and traffic-following models. The majority of these approaches aim to simulate the interactions of a bus with other buses (the bus-following model), with passengers or the surrounding traffic (the traffic-following model), but they all fail to consider the important interactions between buses and their schedules. In a conventional schedule-based public transport system, bus drivers aim to arrive at each stop on time. This means that they will either speed up or slow down if their vehicles are not meeting the schedule. The research within this paper is a novel contribution to the literature of bus route simulation. We introduce the first schedule-following model where buses try to adhere to their schedule in a conventional schedule-based public transport system. A simulated numerical analysis shows the characteristics of the proposed schedule-following model and compares it to existing models. Finally, the model is calibrated using Automatic Vehicle Location and Smart Card data from Brisbane, Australia. The results show good model performance against the observed data. The model is relatively simple, yet the fundamental mechanisms that drive the model are novel and it has the potential to be applied in any city with well-defined bus schedules

    Block of NMDA receptor channels by endogenous neurosteroids: implications for the agonist induced conformational states of the channel vestibule

    N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDARs) mediate synaptic plasticity, and their dysfunction is implicated in multiple brain disorders. NMDARs can be allosterically modulated by numerous compounds, including endogenous neurosteroid pregnanolone sulfate. Here, we identify the molecular basis of the use-dependent and voltage-independent inhibitory effect of neurosteroids on NMDAR responses. The site of action is located at the extracellular vestibule of the receptor's ion channel pore and is accessible after receptor activation. Mutations in the extracellular vestibule in the SYTANLAAF motif disrupt the inhibitory effect of negatively charged steroids. In contrast, positively charged steroids inhibit mutated NMDAR responses in a voltage-dependent manner. These results, in combination with molecular modeling, characterize structure details of the open configuration of the NMDAR channel. Our results provide a unique opportunity for the development of new therapeutic neurosteroid-based ligands to treat diseases associated with dysfunction of the glutamate system

    A New Three-Dimensional Subsulfide Ir₂In₈S with Dirac Semimetal Behavior

    Dirac and Weyl semimetals host exotic quasiparticles with unconventional transport properties, such as high magnetoresistance and carrier mobility. Recent years have witnessed a huge number of newly predicted topological semimetals from existing databases; however, experimental verification often lags behind such predictions. Common reasons are synthetic difficulties or the stability of predicted phases. Here, we report the synthesis of the Type-II Dirac semimetal Ir2In8S, an air-stable compound with a new structure type. This material has two Dirac crossings in its electronic structure along the Γ-Z direction of the Brillouin zone. We further show that Ir2In8S has a high electron carrier mobility of ~10,000 cm2/Vs at 1.8 K, and a large, non-saturating transverse magnetoresistance of ~6000% at 3.34 K in a 14 T applied field. Shubnikov de-Haas oscillations reveal several small Fermi pockets and the possibility of a nontrivial Berry phase. With its facile crystal growth, novel structure type, and striking electronic structure, Ir2In8S introduces a new material system to study topological semimetals and enable advances in the field of topological materials

    Cyclic AMP (cAMP)-dependent protein kinase may play a role in the functional and morphological differentiation of leukemic cells. In this study, we showed that the cAMP analogs, potent activators of protein kinase recently shown to be selective for either site 1 or site 2 cAMP binding sites of protein kinase, demonstrate potent growth inhibition of acute promyelocytic, chronic myelocytic, and acute lymphocytic leukemic cell lines with no sign of toxicity. The growth inhibition accompanied monocytic differentiation in HL-60 cells and a loss of nuclear terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase activity in Molt-4 leukemic cells. The growth inhibition also paralleled a decrease in c-myc protein and RI cAMP receptor protein. Thus, cAMP analogs selective for either site 1 or site 2 of the protein kinase appear to restore a coupling of proliferation and maturation in leukemic cells

    Changes in Treatment Content of Services During Trauma-informed Integrated Services for Women with Co-occurring Disorders

    The experience of trauma is highly prevalent in the lives of women with mental health and substance abuse problems. We examined how an intervention targeted to provide trauma-informed integrated services in the treatment of co-occurring disorders has changed the content of services reported by clients. We found that the intervention led to an increased provision of integrated services as well as services addressing each content area: trauma, mental health and substance abuse. There was no increase in service quantity from the intervention. Incorporation of trauma-specific element in the treatment of mental health and substance abuse may have been successfully implemented at the service level thereby better serve women with complex behavioral health histories
