The role of dietary polyphenols in the moderation of the inflammatory response in early stage colorectal cancer

Current focus in colorectal cancer management is on reducing overall mortality by increasing the number of early stage cancers diagnosed and treated with curative intent. Despite the success of screening programmes in down-staging colorectal cancer, interval cancer rates are substantial and other strategies are desirable. Sporadic colorectal cancer is largely associated with lifestyle factors including diet. Polyphenols are phytochemicals ingested as part of a normal diet which are abundant in plant foods including fruits/berries and vegetables. These may exert their anti-carcinogenic effects via the modulation of inflammatory pathways. Key signal transduction pathways are fundamental to the association of inflammation and disease progression including those mediated by NF-κB and STAT, PI3K and COX. Our aim was to examine the evidence for the effect of dietary polyphenols intake on tumour and host inflammatory responses to determine if polyphenols may be effective as part of a dietary intervention. There is good epidemiological evidence of a reduction in colorectal cancer risk from case-control and cohort studies assessing polyphenol intake. It would be premature to suggest a major public health intervention to promote their consumption however, dietary change is safe and feasible, emphasising the need for further investigation of polyphenols and colorectal cancer risk

A Comparative Study of the Magnitude, Frequency and Distribution of Intense Rainfall in the United Kingdom

During the 1960s, a study was made of the magnitude, frequency and distribution of intense rainfall over the UK, employing data from more than 120 daily-read rain gauges covering the period 1911 to 1960. Using the same methodology, that study was recently updated utilizing data for the period 1961 to 2006 for the same gauges, or from those nearby. This paper describes the techniques applied to ensure consistency of data and statistical modelling. It presents a comparison of patterns of extreme rainfalls for the two periods and discusses the changes that have taken place. Most noticeably, increases up to 20% have occurred in the north west of the country and in parts of East Anglia. There have also been changes in other areas, including decreases of the same magnitude over central England. The implications of these changes are considered

Cherries and cherry growing in Iowa.

The cherry was one of the first fruits cultivated by the early settlers. It was brought with them from the eastern states and the historic cherry pie added to the luxuries of the new home. The plantings were made to supply the home demand and it has only been in recent years that it has been planted essentially for commercial purposes. South of the 42 degree of latitude little difficulty was experienced in growing the varieties of cherries brought from the east, but north of this their cultivation was uncertain and the test winters destroyed many of the trees. Attempts were made to secure hardier varieties. Seedlings were grown and the use of hardier stocks for propagating the cherry was attempted

Notes on strawberries.

The following pages give the results of a variety test of strawberries begun in the spring of 1899. At this time seventy-five varieties were set in plats ten feet long and each plat containing two rows, four feet apart and the plants twelve inches apart in the row, so that each plat contained twenty plants. The matted row system of culture was used, and the plants were allowed to spread until they formed rows about two feet wide. In the spring of 1900 seventeen more varieties were added to the plantation. The results obtained from the plantation in 1900 were not satisfactory on account of invasion of marauders which interferred with the data of yields and the yields in this report are based on the results obtained in 1901, wtih reference, where the results semed to justify same, made to the yield of 1900. Assumptions for a Market Share Theorem

Many marketing models use variants of the relationship: market share equals marketing effort divided by total marketing effort. Usually, share is defined within a customer group presumed to be reasonably homogeneous and overall share is obtained by weighting for the number in the group. Although the basic relationship can be assumed directly, certain insight is gained by deriving it from more fundamental assumptions as follows: For the given customer group, each competitive seller has a real-valued "attraction" with the following properties: (1) attraction is non-negative; (2) the attraction of a set of sellers is the sum of the attractions of the individual sellers; and (3) if the attractions of two sets of sellers are equal, the sellers have equal market shares in the customer groups. It is shown that, if the relation between share and attraction satisfies the above assumptions, is a continuous function, and is required to hold for arbitrary values of attraction and sets of sellers, then the relation is: Share equals attraction divided by total attraction. Insofar as various factors can be assembled into an attraction function that satisfies the assumptions of the theorem, the method for calculating share follows directly

Characterization of three types of silicon solar cells for SEPS Deep Space Mission. Volume 3: Current-voltage characteristics of spectrolab sculptured BSR/P+ (K7), BSR/P+ (K6.5) and BSR (K4.5) cells as a function of temperature and intensity

Three types of high performance silicon solar cells, sculptured BSR/P+(K7), BSR/P+(K6.5) and BSR(K4.5) manufactured by Spectrolab were evaluated for their low temperature and low intensity performance. Sixteen cells of each type were subjected to 11 temperatures and 9 intensities. The sculptured BSR/P+(K7) cells provided the greatest maximum power output both at 1 AU and at LTLI conditions. The average efficiencies of this cell were 14.4 percent at 1 SC/+25 deg C and 18.5 percent at 0.086 SC/-100 deg C

Advanced turboprop testbed systems study. Volume 1: Testbed program objectives and priorities, drive system and aircraft design studies, evaluation and recommendations and wind tunnel test plans

The establishment of propfan technology readiness was determined and candidate drive systems for propfan application were identified. Candidate testbed aircraft were investigated for testbed aircraft suitability and four aircraft selected as possible propfan testbed vehicles. An evaluation of the four candidates was performed and the Boeing KC-135A and the Gulfstream American Gulfstream II recommended as the most suitable aircraft for test application. Conceptual designs of the two recommended aircraft were performed and cost and schedule data for the entire testbed program were generated. The program total cost was estimated and a wind tunnel program cost and schedule is generated in support of the testbed program
