Total synthesis of the potent immunosuppressant (-)-Pironetin
A convergent and efficient total synthesis of (-)-pironetin, a compound that shows plant growth regulatory activity, and is immunosuppressive as well as having remarkable antitumoral activity, is described. The synthesis required 19 steps from N-propionyl oxazolidinone (S)-9 and produced the desired product in 11% overall yield.6628
Optimal use of visual information in adolescents and young adults with developmental coordination disorder
Recent reports offer contrasting views on whether or not the use of online visual control is impaired in individuals with developmental coordination disorder (DCD). This study explored the optimal temporal basis for processing and using visual information in adolescents and young adults with DCD. Participants were 22 adolescents and young adults (12 males and 10 females; M = 19 years, SD = 3). Half had been diagnosed with DCD as children and still performed poorly on the movement assessment battery for children (DCD group; n = 11), and half reported typical development (TD group; n = 11) and were age- and gender-matched with the DCD group. We used performance on a steering task as a measure of information processing and examined the use of advance visual information. The conditions varied the duration of advance visual information: 125, 250, 500, 750, and 1,000 ms. With increased duration of advance visual information, the TD group showed a pattern of linear improvement. For the DCD group, however, the pattern was best described by a U-curve where optimal performance occurred with about 750 ms of advance information. The results suggest that the DCD group has an underlying preference for immediate online processing of visual information. The exact timing for optimal online control may depend crucially on the task, but too much advance information is detrimental to performance
Modelling sustainable intensification in Brazilian agriculture
At the United Nations Framework Conference on Climate Change COP15 (2009) Brazil
presented ambitious commitments or Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs),
to reduce greenhouse gases emissions (GHGs) mitigation by 2020. At COP21 (2015), the
country presented new commitments and a framework to achieve further mitigation targets by
2030 as so-called Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs). Both NAMAs and
INDCs focus on the land use change and agricultural sectors, but the INDCs include a
commitment of zero illegal deforestation in the Amazon by 2030. This research focuses on
the contribution of the livestock sector to reducing GHGs through the adoption of sustainable
intensification measures. A detailed linear programming model, called Economic Analysis of
Greenhouse Gases for Livestock Emissions (EAGGLE), of beef production was developed to
evaluate environmental trade-offs. The modelling encompasses pasture degradation and
recovery processes, animal and deforestation emissions, soil organic carbon dynamics and
upstream life-cycle inventory. The model was parameterized for the Brazilian Cerrado,
Amazon and Atlantic Forest biomes and further developed for farm-scale and regional-scale
analysis. Different versions of the EAGGLE model was used to: (i) Evaluate the GHG
mitigation potential and economic benefit of optimizing pasture management through the
partitioning of initially uniform pasture area; (ii) to define abatement potential and cost-effectiveness
of key mitigation measures applicable to the Brazilian Cerrado; (ii) to
demonstrate the extent of cost-effective mitigation that can be delivered by the livestock
sector as part of INDCs, and to show a result that underpins the national INDC target of zero
deforestation; and (iv) to evaluate the consequences of reducing (or increasing) beef
production on GHGs in the Cerrado. Counter-intuitively, a sensitivity analysis shows that
reducing beef consumption could lead to higher GHG emissions, while increasing production
could reduce total GHGs if livestock is decoupled from deforestation
Polimiosite : investigação clÃnica em duas irmãs
We present an investigation of a case of polymyositis affecting two sisters of one same parenthood. Their cases have been documented for almost two decades, being investigated by means of a diagnostic protocol which combined clinical findings as well as laboratorial, histopathological and image tests. In both cases, clinical manifestations started in childhood, without signs of involvement of the central and peripheral nervous system. Both patients proved to respond to a therapeutics based on corticosteroids. The degree of relatedness between their parents corroborate the notion that genetic factors may contribute to the development of the disease.
Ambas as pacientes responderam
satisfatoriamente a terapia baseada em corticosteróide. O grau de parentesco entre os genitores das pacientes
sugere que fatores genéticos podem predispor ao desenvolvimento da doença

High birth weight as an important risk factor for infant leukemia
In this paper, we compared the birth weight distribution among 201 infant leukaemia (IL) cases with that of 440 noncancer controls enrolled in Brazil in 1999–2005. Compared with the general population and the stratum 2500–2999 g as reference, IL cases weighing 3000–3999 g presented an odds ratio (OR) of 1.68 (95% CI: 1.03–2.76), and those of 4000 g or more, an OR of 2.28 (95% CI: 1.08–4.75), Ptrend<0.01. Using hospital-based controls, the OR for 4000 g or more, compared to 2500–2999 g, was 1.30 (95% CI: 1.02–1.43) after adjusting for confounders (gender, income, maternal age, pesticide and hormonal exposure during pregnancy). The results suggest that high birth weight is associated with increased risk of IL
