    Behaviour of jacked and driven piles in sandy soil

    As an alternative to conventional dynamic pile installation methods, pile jacking is an environmentally friendly technique that could become more widely accepted. Great concern has arisen over the performance of jacked piles as compared with that of driven piles. This paper describes a comprehensive field study that was aimed at investigating the differences and similarities between the behaviour of jacked H-piles and that of driven H-piles. The instrumented piles, varying in length from 32 to 55 m and having a design capacity of up to 3540 kN, were installed in residual soils whose properties are close to silty sands. The load test results indicate that the shaft resistance of jacked piles is generally suffer and stronger than that of driven piles, but the base resistance of jacked piles is weaker than that of driven piles. At a load level of twice the design capacity, the percentage of pile head load carried by base varies from 2% to 10% for jacked piles, with a mean value of 6%; for driven piles the percentage varies from 6% to 61% with a mean value of 38%. The back-calculated values of the shaft friction coefficient, β, were found to be in a range of 0.25-0.6 for both jacked and driven piles. A correlation was also observed between the ultimate shaft friction and the mean standard penetration test N value (N̄), which suggests that the shaft friction can be taken as 1.5N̄ to 2N̄ (kPa) for both jacked and driven H-piles.published_or_final_versio

    Risk-Averse Matchings over Uncertain Graph Databases

    A large number of applications such as querying sensor networks, and analyzing protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks, rely on mining uncertain graph and hypergraph databases. In this work we study the following problem: given an uncertain, weighted (hyper)graph, how can we efficiently find a (hyper)matching with high expected reward, and low risk? This problem naturally arises in the context of several important applications, such as online dating, kidney exchanges, and team formation. We introduce a novel formulation for finding matchings with maximum expected reward and bounded risk under a general model of uncertain weighted (hyper)graphs that we introduce in this work. Our model generalizes probabilistic models used in prior work, and captures both continuous and discrete probability distributions, thus allowing to handle privacy related applications that inject appropriately distributed noise to (hyper)edge weights. Given that our optimization problem is NP-hard, we turn our attention to designing efficient approximation algorithms. For the case of uncertain weighted graphs, we provide a 13\frac{1}{3}-approximation algorithm, and a 15\frac{1}{5}-approximation algorithm with near optimal run time. For the case of uncertain weighted hypergraphs, we provide a Ω(1k)\Omega(\frac{1}{k})-approximation algorithm, where kk is the rank of the hypergraph (i.e., any hyperedge includes at most kk nodes), that runs in almost (modulo log factors) linear time. We complement our theoretical results by testing our approximation algorithms on a wide variety of synthetic experiments, where we observe in a controlled setting interesting findings on the trade-off between reward, and risk. We also provide an application of our formulation for providing recommendations of teams that are likely to collaborate, and have high impact.Comment: 25 page

    A comparison of intrauterine haemopoietic cell transplantation and lentiviral gene transfer for the correction of severe β-thalassaemia in a HbbTh3/+ murine model

    Major haemoglobinopathies place tremendous strain on global resources. Intrauterine haemopoietic cell (IUHCT) and gene (IUGT) therapies can potentially reduce perinatal morbidities with greater efficacy than postnatal therapy alone. We performed both procedures in the thalassaemic HbbTh3/+ murine model. Intraperitoneal delivery of coisogenic cells at E13-14 produced dose-dependent chimerism. High-dose adult bone marrow (BM) cells maintained 0.2-3.1% chimerism over ~24 weeks and treated heterozygotes demonstrated higher chimerism than wild-type pups (1.6 vs. 0.7%). Fetal liver cells produced higher chimerism compared to adult BM when transplanted at the same doses, maintaining 1.8-2.4% chimerism over ~32 weeks. We boosted transplanted mice postnatally with adult BM cells following busulfan conditioning. Engraftment was maintained at >1% only in recipients which were chimeric prior to boosting. IUHCT-treated non-chimeras and non-IUHCT mice showed micro- or no chimerism. Additional fludarabine treatment produced higher chimerism than busulfan alone. Engraftment was more effective following higher starting chimerism prior to boosting and in heterozygotes. Chimeric heterozygotes expressed 2.2-15.1% donor cells with eventual decline at 24 weeks (vs. <1% in non-chimeras) and demonstrated improved haematological indices and smaller spleens compared to untreated heterozygotes. Intravenous delivery of GLOBE lentiviral-vector expressing HBB (human β-globin) resulted in vector concentration of 0.001-0.6 copies/cell. Most haematological indices were higher in treated than untreated heterozygotes including haemoglobin and mean corpuscular volume, though still lower than in wild-types. Thus both direct IUGT and IUHCT strategies can be used to achieve haematological improvement but require further dose optimisation. IUHCT will be useful combined with postnatal transplantation to further enhance engraftment

    Attachment styles and personal growth following romantic breakups: The mediating roles of distress, rumination, and tendency to rebound

Study 1 (N = 411) and Study 2 (N = 465) measured attachment style, breakup distress, and personal growth; Study 2 additionally measured ruminative reflection, brooding, and proclivity to rebound with new partners. Structural equation modelling revealed in both studies that anxiety was indirectly associated with greater personal growth through heightened breakup distress, whereas avoidance was indirectly associated with lower personal growth through inhibited breakup distress. Study 2 further showed that the positive association of breakup distress with personal growth was accounted for by enhanced reflection and brooding, and that anxious individuals’ greater personal growth was also explained by their proclivity to rebound. These findings suggest that anxious individuals’ hyperactivated breakup distress may act as a catalyst for personal growth by promoting the cognitive processing of breakup-related thoughts and emotions, whereas avoidant individuals’ deactivated distress may inhibit personal growth by suppressing this cognitive work

    Risk factors for severe hand foot mouth disease in Singapore: a case control study

    BACKGROUND: Hand foot mouth disease (HFMD) is a common childhood infection that can potentially lead to serious complications. The aim of this study is to identify risk factors of acquiring severe HFMD in our population. METHODS: We performed a case control study using patients admitted to our hospital from August 2004 to July 2014. Cases were patients with severe HFMD disease while controls were age-matched patients obtained from the same year, in a 2:1 ratio. Data comprising demographic characteristics, clinical symptoms and signs, and lab findings were collected. Conditional univariable logistic regression was performed to determine risk factors for severe disease. RESULTS: A total of 24 cases of severe HFMD were identified and matched with 48 controls. Seventeen (70.8 %) cases had central nervous system complications. Seven (29.2 %) had cardiovascular complications without evidence of myocarditis. One patient died of encephalitis. The overall mortality of severe disease is 4 %. Evidence of hypoperfusion, seizure, altered mentation, meningeal irritation, tachycardia, tachypnea, raised absolute neutrophil count and EV-A71 (Enterovirus A71) positivity were significantly associated with a severe course of HFMD. CONCLUSION: In managing children with HFMD, physicians should consider these factors to help identify patients at risk for severe disease

    Longer Leukocyte Telomere Length Is Associated with Smaller Hippocampal Volume among Non-Demented APOE ε3/ε3 Subjects

    Telomere length shortens with cellular division, and leukocyte telomere length is used as a marker for systemic telomere length. The hippocampus hosts adult neurogenesis and is an important structure for episodic memory, and carriers of the apolipoprotein E ε4 allele exhibit higher hippocampal atrophy rates and differing telomere dynamics compared with non-carriers. The authors investigated whether leukocyte telomere length was associated with hippocampal volume in 57 cognitively intact subjects (29 ε3/ε3 carriers; 28 ε4 carriers) aged 49–79 yr. Leukocyte telomere length correlated inversely with left (rs = −0.465; p = 0.011), right (rs = −0.414; p = 0.025), and total hippocampus volume (rs = −0.519; p = 0.004) among APOE ε3/ε3 carriers, but not among ε4 carriers. However, the ε4 carriers fit with the general correlation pattern exhibited by the ε3/ε3 carriers, as ε4 carriers on average had longer telomeres and smaller hippocampi compared with ε3/ε3 carriers. The relationship observed can be interpreted as long telomeres representing a history of relatively low cellular proliferation, reflected in smaller hippocampal volumes. The results support the potential of leukocyte telomere length being used as a biomarker for tapping functional and structural processes of the aging brain
