Undergraduate Digital Scholarship at Gettysburg College
Musselman Library’s Digital Scholarship Committee supports high-impact student projects that use digital tools and methods to interpret, analyze, and present humanistic research. In addition to facilitating an eight-week summer research fellowship, the Committee partners with faculty members to design and oversee digital projects introduced as course assignments. A Multiwavelength Investigation of Unidentified EGRET Sources
Statistical studies indicate that the 271 point sources of high-energy gamma
rays belong to two groups: a Galactic population and an isotropic extragalactic
population. Many unidentified extragalactic sources are certainly blazars, and
it is the intention of this work to uncover gamma-ray blazars missed by
previous attempts. Until recently, searches for blazar counterparts to
unidentified EGRET sources have focused on finding AGN that have 5-GHz radio
flux densities S_5 near or above 1 Jy. However, the recent blazar
identification of 3EG J2006-2321 (S_5 = 260 mJy) and other work suggest that
careful studies of weaker flat-spectrum sources may be fruitful. In this
spirit, error circles of 4 high-latitude unidentified EGRET sources have been
searched for 5-GHz sources. The gamma-ray sources are 3EG J1133+0033, 3EG
J1212+2304, 3EG J1222+2315, and 3EG J1227+4302. Within the error contours of
each of the four sources are found 6 radio candidates; by observing the
positions of the radio sources with the 0.81-m Tenagra II telescope it is
determined that 14 of these 24 radio sources have optical counterparts with R <
22. Eight of these from two different EGRET sources have been observed in the
B, V, and R bands in more than one epoch and the analysis of these data is
ongoing. Any sources that are found to be variable will be the objects of

Helium mixtures in nanotube bundles
An analogue to Raoult's law is determined for the case of a 3He-4He mixture
adsorbed in the interstitial channels of a bundle of carbon nanotubes. Unlike
the case of He mixtures in other environments, the ratio of the partial
pressures of the coexisting vapor is found to be a simple function of the ratio

Modeling and Evaluation of a Plug In Hybrid Fuel Cell Shuttle Bus
The Center for Electromechanics at The University of Texas at Austin acquired a plug-in hybrid fuel cell bus for demonstration and model development under a program funded through the USDOT-FTA. The purpose of this program was to evaluate the performance and use of the bus while developing a model that could predict overall performance and energy consumption on daily driving routes. A model of the fuel cell bus was developed using PSAT (Powertrain Analysis Toolkit). The model development involved verifying component characteristics and a parametric study of drivetrain efficiencies to relate predicted to measured vehicle energy consumption data from on-road testing. The PSAT model was able to predict net energy consumption to within 5% over varying route profiles and vehicle conditions. Further investigations with advanced energy storage were performed to evaluate the benefits of ultracapacitor assisted batteries by using the correlated PSAT model. Ultracapacitors act as an additional load leveling device in the hybrid vehicle for peak propulsion and braking vehicle loads, thereby reducing stress on the batteries. The model simulation results show that ultracapacitors can increase overall vehicle economy by 2 to 4% and deliver a net increase in battery efficiency of 3 to 4%.Center for Electromechanic

Prime mover and energy storage considerations for a hydrogen-powered series hybrid shuttle
This paper describes simulation results obtained through modeling the operation of a 6.7 m long hydrogen-powered shuttle bus. The actual shuttle bus and its hydrogen refueling station constitute the first of its kind in the state of Texas. The simulations are used to initially verify the stated performance of the shuttle bus and to validate the modeling approach. The vehicle model is then modified to assess the predicted changes in performance, efficiency, and route following capability while conducting a parametric study involving fuel cell and internal combustion prime movers as well as chemical battery and flywheel energy storage systems. Simulation results show that a fuel cell-powered shuttle bus with a high power density, low mass energy storage system provides the highest vehicle range and lowest energy consumption.Center for Electromechanic

Geologic and geotechnical assessment RFETS Building 371, Rocky Flats, Colorado
This report describes the review and evaluation of the geological, geotechnical and geophysical data supporting the design basis analysis for the Rocky Flats Environmental Test Site (RFETS) Building 371. The primary purpose of the geologic and geotechnical reviews and assessments described herein are to assess the adequacy of the crustal and near surface rock and soil model used in the seismic analysis of Building 371. This review was requested by the RFETS Seismic Evaluation Program. The purpose was to determine the adequacy of data to support the design basis for Building 371, with respect to seismic loading. The objectives required to meet this goal were to: (1) review techniques used to gather data (2) review analysis and interpretations of the data; and (3) make recommendations to gather additional data if required. Where there were questions or inadequacies in data or interpretation, recommendations were made for new data that will support the design basis analysis and operation of Building 371. In addition, recommendations are provided for a geologic and geophysical assessment for a new facility at the Rocky Flats Site
Stereotype priming in face recognition: interactions between semantic and visual information in face encoding
The accuracy with which previously unfamiliar faces are recognised is increased by the presentation of a stereotype-congruent occupation label (Klatzky, Martin, & Kane, 1982a, b). For example, providing the label ‘criminal’ both during encoding and test improves recognition for previously unfamiliar faces that look like the stereotypical criminal. Experiments 1 and 2 both replicate this effect and show that the label exerts its influence during the encoding of stereotypical faces and has little influence at test. These findings indicate that semantic information that is congruent with novel stereotypical faces facilitates their encoding
Strong Gravitational Lensing and Dark Energy Complementarity
In the search for the nature of dark energy most cosmological probes measure
simple functions of the expansion rate. While powerful, these all involve
roughly the same dependence on the dark energy equation of state parameters,
with anticorrelation between its present value w_0 and time variation w_a.
Quantities that have instead positive correlation and so a sensitivity
direction largely orthogonal to, e.g., distance probes offer the hope of
achieving tight constraints through complementarity. Such quantities are found
in strong gravitational lensing observations of image separations and time
delays. While degeneracy between cosmological parameters prevents full
complementarity, strong lensing measurements to 1% accuracy can improve
equation of state characterization by 15-50%. Next generation surveys should
provide data on roughly 10^5 lens systems, though systematic errors will remain

M-theory on a Time-dependent Plane-wave
We propose a matrix model on a homogeneous plane-wave background with 20
supersymmetries. This background is anti-Mach type and is equivalent to the
time-dependent background. We study supersymmetries in this theory and
calculate the superalgebra. The vacuum energy of the abelian part is also
calculated. In addition we find classical solutions such as graviton solution,
