Prüfer rings
AbstractA short exposition of the most important properties of Prüfer rings is given. The use of the axiom of choice is avoided whenever this is possible
Learning cover context-free grammars from structural data
We consider the problem of learning an unknown context-free grammar when the
only knowledge available and of interest to the learner is about its structural
descriptions with depth at most The goal is to learn a cover
context-free grammar (CCFG) with respect to , that is, a CFG whose
structural descriptions with depth at most agree with those of the
unknown CFG. We propose an algorithm, called , that efficiently learns
a CCFG using two types of queries: structural equivalence and structural
membership. We show that runs in time polynomial in the number of
states of a minimal deterministic finite cover tree automaton (DCTA) with
respect to . This number is often much smaller than the number of states
of a minimum deterministic finite tree automaton for the structural
descriptions of the unknown grammar
Thermodynamic Description of the Relaxation of Two-Dimensional Euler Turbulence Using Tsallis Statistics
Euler turbulence has been experimentally observed to relax to a
metaequilibrium state that does not maximize the Boltzmann entropy, but rather
seems to minimize enstrophy. We show that a recent generalization of
thermodynamics and statistics due to Tsallis is capable of explaining this
phenomenon in a natural way. The maximization of the generalized entropy
for this system leads to precisely the same profiles predicted by the
Restricted Minimum Enstrophy theory of Huang and Driscoll. This makes possible
the construction of a comprehensive thermodynamic description of Euler
turbulence.Comment: 15 pages, RevTe
Stochastic motion of test particle implies that G varies with time
The aim of this letter is to propose a new description to the time varying
gravitational constant problem, which naturally implements the Dirac's large
numbers hypothesis in a new proposed holographic scenario for the origin of
gravity as an entropic force. We survey the effect of the Stochastic motion of
the test particle in Verlinde's scenario for gravity\cite{Verlinde}. Firstly we
show that we must get the equipartition values for which
leads to the usual Newtonian gravitational constant. Secondly, the stochastic
(Brownian) essence of the motion of the test particle, modifies the Newton's
2'nd law. The direct result is that the Newtonian constant has been time
dependence in resemblance as \cite{Running}.Comment: Accepted in International Journal of Theoretical Physic
Electron transport through interacting quantum dots
We present a detailed theoretical investigation of the effect of Coulomb
interactions on electron transport through quantum dots and double barrier
structures connected to a voltage source via an arbitrary linear impedance.
Combining real time path integral techniques with the scattering matrix
approach we derive the effective action and evaluate the current-voltage
characteristics of quantum dots at sufficiently large conductances. Our
analysis reveals a reach variety of different regimes which we specify in
details for the case of chaotic quantum dots. At sufficiently low energies the
interaction correction to the current depends logarithmically on temperature
and voltage. We identify two different logarithmic regimes with the crossover
between them occurring at energies of order of the inverse dwell time of
electrons in the dot. We also analyze the frequency-dependent shot noise in
chaotic quantum dots and elucidate its direct relation to interaction effects
in mesoscopic electron transport.Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures. References added, discussion slightly extende
Analytic theory of ground-state properties of a three-dimensional electron gas at varying spin polarization
We present an analytic theory of the spin-resolved pair distribution
functions and the ground-state energy of an electron gas
with an arbitrary degree of spin polarization. We first use the Hohenberg-Kohn
variational principle and the von Weizs\"{a}cker-Herring ideal kinetic energy
functional to derive a zero-energy scattering Schr\"{o}dinger equation for
. The solution of this equation is implemented
within a Fermi-hypernetted-chain approximation which embodies the Hartree-Fock
limit and is shown to satisfy an important set of sum rules. We present
numerical results for the ground-state energy at selected values of the spin
polarization and for in both a paramagnetic and a fully
spin-polarized electron gas, in comparison with the available data from Quantum
Monte Carlo studies over a wide range of electron density.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Search for heavy neutrinos mixing with tau neutrinos
We report on a search for heavy neutrinos (\nus) produced in the decay
D_s\to \tau \nus at the SPS proton target followed by the decay \nudecay in
the NOMAD detector. Both decays are expected to occur if \nus is a component
of .\
From the analysis of the data collected during the 1996-1998 runs with
protons on target, a single candidate event consistent with
background expectations was found. This allows to derive an upper limit on the
mixing strength between the heavy neutrino and the tau neutrino in the \nus
mass range from 10 to 190 . Windows between the SN1987a and Big Bang
Nucleosynthesis lower limits and our result are still open for future
experimental searches. The results obtained are used to constrain an
interpretation of the time anomaly observed in the KARMEN1 detector.\Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures, a few comments adde
Final NOMAD results on nu_mu->nu_tau and nu_e->nu_tau oscillations including a new search for nu_tau appearance using hadronic tau decays
Results from the nu_tau appearance search in a neutrino beam using the full
NOMAD data sample are reported. A new analysis unifies all the hadronic tau
decays, significantly improving the overall sensitivity of the experiment to
oscillations. The "blind analysis" of all topologies yields no evidence for an
oscillation signal. In the two-family oscillation scenario, this sets a 90%
C.L. allowed region in the sin^2(2theta)-Delta m^2 plane which includes
sin^2(2theta)<3.3 x 10^{-4} at large Delta m^2 and Delta m^2 < 0.7 eV^2/c^4 at
sin^2(2theta)=1. The corresponding contour in the nu_e->nu_tau oscillation
hypothesis results in sin^2(2theta)<1.5 x 10^{-2} at large Delta m^2 and Delta
m^2 < 5.9 eV^2/c^4 at sin^2(2theta)=1. We also derive limits on effective
couplings of the tau lepton to nu_mu or nu_e.Comment: 46 pages, 16 figures, Latex, to appear on Nucl. Phys.
Inclusive production of and mesons in charged current interactions
The inclusive production of the meson resonances ,
and in neutrino-nucleus charged current interactions has been
studied with the NOMAD detector exposed to the wide band neutrino beam
generated by 450 GeV protons at the CERN SPS. For the first time the
meson is observed in neutrino interactions. The statistical
significance of its observation is 6 standard deviations. The presence of
in neutrino interactions is reliably established. The average
multiplicity of these three resonances is measured as a function of several
kinematic variables. The experimental results are compared to the
multiplicities obtained from a simulation based on the Lund model. In addition,
the average multiplicity of in antineutrino - nucleus
interactions is measured.Comment: 23 pages, 14 figures, 8 tables. To appear in Nucl. Phys.
