    Optimized generation of spatial qudits by using a pure phase spatial light modulator

    We present a method for preparing arbitrary pure states of spatial qudits, namely, D-dimensional (D > 2) quantum systems carrying information in the transverse momentum and position of single photons. For this purpose, a set of D slits with complex transmission are displayed on a spatial light modulator (SLM). In a recent work we have shown a method that requires a single phase-only SLM to control independently the complex coefficients which define the quantum state of dimension D. The amplitude information was codified by introducing phase gratings inside each slit and the phase value of the complex transmission was added to the phase gratings. After a spatial filtering process we obtained in the image plane the desired qudit state. Although this method has proven to be a good alternative to compact the previously reported architectures, it presents some features that could be improved. In this paper we present an alternative scheme to codify the required phase values that minimizes the effects of temporal phase fluctuations associated to the SLM where the codification is carried on. In this scheme the amplitudes are set by appropriate phase gratings addressed at the SLM while the relative phases are obtained by a lateral displacement of these phase gratings. We show that this method improves the quality of the prepared state and provides very high fidelities of preparation for any state. An additional advantage of this scheme is that a complete 2\pi modulation is obtained by shifting the grating by one period, and hence the encoding is not limited by the phase modulation range achieved by the SLM. Numerical simulations, that take into account the phase fluctuations, show high fidelities for thousands of qubit states covering the whole Bloch sphere surface.     Conditional purity and quantum correlation measures in two qubit mixed states

    We analyze and show experimental results of the conditional purity, the quantum discord and other related measures of quantum correlation in mixed two-qubit states constructed from a pair of photons in identical polarization states. The considered states are relevant for the description of spin pair states in interacting spin chains in a transverse magnetic field. We derive clean analytical expressions for the conditional local purity and other correlation measures obtained as a result of a remote local projective measurement, which are fully verified by the experimental results. A simple exact expression for the quantum discord of these states in terms of the maximum conditional purity is also derived.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, minor changes, to be published in J. Phys.

    Dynamics of gravity driven three-dimensional thin films on hydrophilic-hydrophobic patterned substrates

    We investigate numerically the dynamics of unstable gravity driven three-dimensional thin liquid films on hydrophilic-hydrophobic patterned substrates of longitudinal stripes and checkerboard arrangements. The thin film can be guided preferentially on hydrophilic longitudinal stripes, while fingers develop on adjacent hydrophobic stripes if their width is large enough. On checkerboard patterns, the film fingering occurs on hydrophobic domains, while lateral spreading is favoured on hydrophilic domains, providing a mechanism to tune the growth rate of the film. By means of kinematical arguments, we quantitatively predict the growth rate of the contact line on checkerboard arrangements, providing a first step towards potential techniques that control thin film growth in experimental setups.Comment: 30 pages, 12 figure

    Serological Survey of Antibodies to Mannheimia haemolytica and Pasteurella multocida in Camelids from Argentina

    South American camelids are a source of livestock wealth in Andean countries. In Argentina,there is little information about camelid pathogens, and most of the literature data available areseroprevalence works against virus. Besides, little is known about the immunological status againstbacterial agents affecting these animals. In an effort to explore the serological status of Argentineancamelids, we evaluated the presence of serum antibodies against bacterial pathogens involved inpneumonic diseases (Pasteurella multocida and Mannheimia haemolytica) in llamas from differentregions of the country. By ELISA, a high seroprevalence for both pathogens was found in the serumsamples; higher optical density (OD) values were obtained when the sera were incubated with heatkilledP. multocida as coating antigen compared to M. haemolytica. In addition, a large number ofsera analyzed presented high OD values for both microorganisms independently of their originregion. Serum avidity was also evaluated, by means of an assay based on antibody desorption byurea. No correlation was found between the high ODs obtained for P. multocida and the serumavidity. On the other hand, samples reacting with M. haemolytica had lower OD values but higheravidity index. The antigenic recognition pattern for both microorganisms was determined bywestern blot. Unlike P. multocida, the antigenic recognition pattern of M. haemolytica did not differamong serum samples obtained from animals living in different areas. In summary, we found thatcamelids can synthetize antibodies that recognize M. haemolytica with high avidity for differentantigens of the bacterium, suggesting that Argentinean camelids are in contact with M. haemolyticawhich is probably a causative agent of subclinical infections. Conversely, specific antibodies forP. multocida were also found, but these sera presented low avidity that is probably the result of acolonization process by this bacterium, or else, to be a consequence of cross-reactivity phenomenaFil: Díaz, Ailén Magalí.     Redox proteins of hydroxylating bacterial dioxygenases establish a regulatory cascade that prevents gratuitous induction of tetralin biodegradation genes

    Bacterial dioxygenase systems are multicomponent enzymes that catalyze the initial degradation of many environmentally hazardous compounds. In Sphingopyxis granuli strain TFA tetralin dioxygenase hydroxylates tetralin, an organic contaminant. It consists of a ferredoxin reductase (ThnA4), a ferredoxin (ThnA3) and a oxygenase (ThnA1/ThnA2), forming a NAD(P)H-ThnA4-ThnA3-ThnA1/ThnA2 electron transport chain. ThnA3 has also a regulatory function since it prevents expression of tetralin degradation genes (thn) in the presence of non-metabolizable substrates of the catabolic pathway. This role is of physiological relevance since avoids gratuitous and wasteful production of catabolic enzymes. Our hypothesis for thn regulation implies that ThnA3 exerts its action by diverting electrons towards the regulator ThnY, an iron-sulfur flavoprotein that together with the transcriptional activator ThnR is necessary for thn gene expression. Here we analyze electron transfer among ThnA4, ThnA3 and ThnY by using stopped-flow spectrophotometry and determination of midpoint reduction potentials. Our results indicate that when accumulated in its reduced form ThnA3 is able to fully reduce ThnY. In addition, we have reproduced in vitro the regulatory circuit in the proposed physiological direction, NAD(P)H-ThnA4-ThnA3-ThnY. ThnA3 represents an unprecedented way of communication between a catabolic pathway and its regulatory system to prevent gratuitous induction

    Magnetized granular particles running and tumbling on S1S^{1}

    It has been shown that a nonvibrated magnetic granular system, when it is feeded by means an altenating magnetic field, behaves with most of the distinctive physical features of active matter systems. In this work we focus our attention on the simplest granular system composed by a single magnetized spherical particle allocated in a quasi one-dimensional circular channel that receives energy from a magnetic field reservoir and transduces it into a running and tumbling motion. The theoretical analysis based on the run and tumble model on a circle of radius R forecasts the existence of a dynamical phase transition between an erratic motion (disordered phase) when the characteristic persistence length of the run and tumble motion, c<R/2\ell_{c} < R/2, to a persistent motion (ordered phase) when c>R/2\ell_{c}> R/2. It is found that the limiting behaviours of these phases correspond to a Brownian motion on the circle and a simple uniform circular motion, respectively. It is qualitatively shown that the lower magnetization of a particle, the larger persistence lenght is. It is so at least within the experimental limit of validity of our experiments.     Teaching argumentative synthesis writing through deliberative dialogues: instructional practices in secondary education

    Dialogical argumentation practice contributes positively to argumentative writing skills. Specifically, deliberative dialogues are effective in promoting argument and counterargument integration in students' essays. However, the potential of dialogic activities may be increased if they are combined with instructional practices. The primary objective of this research is to compare the impact of four intervention programs, aimed at improving argumentative synthesis writing from conflicting sources. The four programs resulted from the combination of two instructional components (Explicit Instruction through video modelling—EI, or a Procedural Guideline—G), while Deliberative Dialogues—DD—were a constant element. We conducted a pre-post quasi-experimental study in which 186 Spanish third grade secondary school students (aged 14–15) participated. We evaluated the quality of the syntheses by examining the level of argumentative coverage (the total number of arguments included in the synthesis) and the level of integration (the type and frequency of the argumentative strategies used in the syntheses). The results showed that the effectiveness of the instructional methods varies according to the synthesis quality indicator. Explicit instruction, in combination with deliberative dialogues, was especially helpful in improving the level of integration of syntheses. The procedural guideline, in combination with deliberative dialogues, contributed significantly to the coverage of arguments. The combination of these two elements did not favor the writing of synthesis as expected, probably due to the conditions in which the intervention was carried out. The findings of this study revealed that the coverage of arguments and integration processes are of different nature, follow different learning paths and require different instructional processes.pre-print875 K
