Connecting the Holographic and Wilsonian Renormalization Groups
Inspired by the AdS/CFT correspondence, we develop an explicit formal duality
between the planar limit of a d-dimensional gauge theory and a classical field
theory in a (d+1)-dimensional anti-de Sitter space. The key ingredient is the
identification of fields in AdS with generalized Hubbard-Stratonovich
transforms of single-trace couplings of the QFT. We show that the Wilsonian
renormalization group flow of these transformed couplings matches the
holographic (Hamilton-Jacobi) flow of bulk fields along the radial direction in
AdS. This result allows one to outline an AdS/CFT dictionary that does not rely

Collective Excitations of Holographic Quantum Liquids in a Magnetic Field
We use holography to study N=4 supersymmetric SU(Nc) Yang-Mills theory in the
large-Nc and large-coupling limits coupled to a number Nf << Nc of
(n+1)-dimensional massless supersymmetric hypermultiplets in the Nc
representation of SU(Nc), with n=2,3. We introduce a temperature T, a baryon
number chemical potential mu, and a baryon number magnetic field B, and work in
a regime with mu >> T,\sqrt{B}. We study the collective excitations of these
holographic quantum liquids by computing the poles in the retarded Green's
function of the baryon number charge density operator and the associated peaks
in the spectral function. We focus on the evolution of the collective
excitations as we increase the frequency relative to T, i.e. the
hydrodynamic/collisionless crossover. We find that for all B, at low
frequencies the tallest peak in the spectral function is associated with
hydrodynamic charge diffusion. At high frequencies the tallest peak is
associated with a sound mode similar to the zero sound mode in the
collisionless regime of a Landau Fermi liquid. The sound mode has a gap
proportional to B, and as a result for intermediate frequencies and for B
sufficiently large compared to T the spectral function is strongly suppressed.
We find that the hydrodynamic/collisionless crossover occurs at a frequency

Molecular Valves for Controlling Gas Phase Transport Made from Discrete Angstrom-Sized Pores in Graphene
An ability to precisely regulate the quantity and location of molecular flux
is of value in applications such as nanoscale 3D printing, catalysis, and
sensor design. Barrier materials containing pores with molecular dimensions
have previously been used to manipulate molecular compositions in the gas
phase, but have so far been unable to offer controlled gas transport through
individual pores. Here, we show that gas flux through discrete angstrom-sized
pores in monolayer graphene can be detected and then controlled using
nanometer-sized gold clusters, which are formed on the surface of the graphene
and can migrate and partially block a pore. In samples without gold clusters,
we observe stochastic switching of the magnitude of the gas permeance, which we
attribute to molecular rearrangements of the pore. Our molecular valves could
be used, for example, to develop unique approaches to molecular synthesis that
are based on the controllable switching of a molecular gas flux, reminiscent of
ion channels in biological cell membranes and solid state nanopores.Comment: to appear in Nature Nanotechnolog
The Precursors and Products of Justice Climates: Group Leader Antecedents and Employee Attitudinal Consequences
Drawing on the organizational justice, organizational climate, leadership and personality, and social comparison theory literatures, we develop hypotheses about the effects of leader personality on the development of three types of justice climates (e.g., procedural, interpersonal, and informational), and the moderating effects of these climates on individual level justice- attitude relationships. Largely consistent with the theoretically-derived hypotheses, the results showed that leader (a) agreeableness was positively related to procedural, interpersonal and informational justice climates, (b) conscientiousness was positively related to a procedural justice climate, and (c) neuroticism was negatively related to all three types of justice climates. Further, consistent with social comparison theory, multilevel data analyses revealed that the relationship between individual justice perceptions and job attitudes (e.g., job satisfaction, commitment) was moderated by justice climate such that the relationships were stronger when justice climate was high
A critical evaluation of network and pathway based classifiers for outcome prediction in breast cancer
Recently, several classifiers that combine primary tumor data, like gene
expression data, and secondary data sources, such as protein-protein
interaction networks, have been proposed for predicting outcome in breast
cancer. In these approaches, new composite features are typically constructed
by aggregating the expression levels of several genes. The secondary data
sources are employed to guide this aggregation. Although many studies claim
that these approaches improve classification performance over single gene
classifiers, the gain in performance is difficult to assess. This stems mainly
from the fact that different breast cancer data sets and validation procedures
are employed to assess the performance. Here we address these issues by
employing a large cohort of six breast cancer data sets as benchmark set and by
performing an unbiased evaluation of the classification accuracies of the
different approaches. Contrary to previous claims, we find that composite
feature classifiers do not outperform simple single gene classifiers. We
investigate the effect of (1) the number of selected features; (2) the specific
gene set from which features are selected; (3) the size of the training set and
(4) the heterogeneity of the data set on the performance of composite feature
and single gene classifiers. Strikingly, we find that randomization of
secondary data sources, which destroys all biological information in these
sources, does not result in a deterioration in performance of composite feature
classifiers. Finally, we show that when a proper correction for gene set size
is performed, the stability of single gene sets is similar to the stability of
composite feature sets. Based on these results there is currently no reason to
prefer prognostic classifiers based on composite features over single gene
classifiers for predicting outcome in breast cancer
Quark Number Susceptibility with Finite Chemical Potential in Holographic QCD
We study the quark number susceptibility in holographic QCD with a finite
chemical potential or under an external magnetic field at finite temperature.
We first consider the quark number susceptibility with the chemical potential.
We observe that approaching the critical temperature from high temperature
regime, the quark number susceptibility divided by temperature square develops
a peak as we increase the chemical potential, which confirms recent lattice QCD
results. We discuss this behavior in connection with the existence of the
critical end point in the QCD phase diagram. We also consider the quark number
susceptibility under the external magnetic field. We predict that the quark
number susceptibility exhibits a blow-up behavior at low temperature as we
raise the value of the magnetic field. We finally spell out some limitations of

Recent trends in cutaneous malignant melanoma in the Yorkshire region of England; incidence, mortality and survival in relation to stage of disease, 1993–2003
The aim of this study was to investigate recent trends in incidence, mortality and survival in patients diagnosed with malignant melanoma (MM) in relation to stage (Breslow thickness). Cases of primary invasive and in situ MM diagnosed between 1st January 1993 and 31st December 2003 in the former Yorkshire Health Authority were identified from cancer registry data. Over the study period, the incidence of invasive MM increased from 5.4 to 9.7 per 100 000 in male subjects and from 7.5 to 13.1 per 100 000 in female subjects. Most of this increase was seen in thin tumours (<1.5 mm). Thin tumours were more likely to be diagnosed in the younger age groups and be classified as superficial spreading melanoma. In situ melanoma rates increased only slightly. Over the same time period, mortality rates have been relatively constant in both male and female subjects. Five-year relative survival varied from 91.8% (95% CI 90.4–93.1) for patients with thin tumours to 41.5% (95% CI 36.7–46.3) for those with thick tumours. In multivariable analyses, Breslow thickness was the most important prognostic factor. Age, sex and level of deprivation were also identified as independent prognostic factors. The trends in incidence suggest that the increase is real, rather than an artefact of increased scrutiny, implying that primary prevention in the Yorkshire area of the UK has failed to control trends in incidence. Mortality, in contrast, appears to be levelling off, indicating that secondary prevention has been more effective
Transport in Anisotropic Superfluids: A Holographic Description
We study transport phenomena in p-wave superfluids in the context of
gauge/gravity duality. Due to the spacetime anisotropy of this system, the
tensorial structure of the transport coefficients is non-trivial in contrast to
the isotropic case. In particular, there is an additional shear mode which
leads to a non-universal value of the shear viscosity even in an Einstein
gravity setup. In this paper, we present a complete study of the helicity two
and helicity one fluctuation modes. In addition to the non-universal shear
viscosity, we also investigate the thermoelectric effect, i.e. the mixing of
electric and heat current. Moreover, we also find an additional effect due to

Non-perturbative computation of double inclusive gluon production in the Glasma
The near-side ridge observed in A+A collisions at RHIC has been described as
arising from the radial flow of Glasma flux tubes formed at very early times in
the collisions. We investigate the viability of this scenario by performing a
non-perturbative numerical computation of double inclusive gluon production in
the Glasma. Our results support the conjecture that the range of transverse
color screening of correlations determining the size of the flux tubes is a
semi-hard scale, albeit with non-trivial structure. We discuss our results in

Family composition and age at menarche: findings from the international Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children Study
This research was funded by The University of St Andrews and NHS Health Scotland.Background Early menarche has been associated with father absence, stepfather presence and adverse health consequences in later life. This article assesses the association of different family compositions with the age at menarche. Pathways are explored which may explain any association between family characteristics and pubertal timing. Methods Cross-sectional, international data on the age at menarche, family structure and covariates (age, psychosomatic complaints, media consumption, physical activity) were collected from the 2009–2010 Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) survey. The sample focuses on 15-year old girls comprising 36,175 individuals across 40 countries in Europe and North America (N = 21,075 for age at menarche). The study examined the association of different family characteristics with age at menarche. Regression and path analyses were applied incorporating multilevel techniques to adjust for the nested nature of data within countries. Results Living with mother (Cohen’s d = .12), father (d = .08), brothers (d = .04) and sisters (d = .06) are independently associated with later age at menarche. Living in a foster home (d = −.16), with ‘someone else’ (d = −.11), stepmother (d = −.10) or stepfather (d = −.06) was associated with earlier menarche. Path models show that up to 89% of these effects can be explained through lifestyle and psychological variables. Conclusions Earlier menarche is reported amongst those with living conditions other than a family consisting of two biological parents. This can partly be explained by girls’ higher Body Mass Index in these families which is a biological determinant of early menarche. Lower physical activity and elevated psychosomatic complaints were also more often found in girls in these family environments.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
