Graphical User Interface for the NASA FLOPS Aircraft Performance and Sizing Code

    Get PDF
XFLOPS is an X-Windows/Motif graphical user interface for the aircraft performance and sizing code FLOPS. This new interface simplifies entering data and analyzing results, thereby reducing analysis time and errors. Data entry is simpler because input windows are used for each of the FLOPS namelists. These windows contain fields to input the variable's values along with help information describing the variable's function. Analyzing results is simpler because output data are displayed rapidly. This is accomplished in two ways. First, because the output file has been indexed, users can view particular sections with the click of a mouse button. Second, because menu picks have been created, users can plot engine and aircraft performance data. In addition, XFLOPS has a built-in help system and complete on-line documentation for FLOPS

Constructing a coherent STEM strategy with schools

    Get PDF
Most universities run STEM enrichment activities with local schools. At UWE we have run activities with respect to mathematics (Maths Challenge, Maths Event Day, FUNMaths Roadshows), Engineering (Engineering activity day, Bloodhound), Science (Science Awareness Day, Hands on Science Day, Bristol Festival of Nature). In contrast, the University of Plymouth as well as subject specific events, run a STEM activity incorporating all three STEM subject (Science, Engineering and Mathematics). This activity is rolled out to schools in the region throughout June. Both approaches have merit. We propose to share practice between the University of Plymouth and UWE through staff visits with the objective of setting up and piloting at UWE a STOP type project as currently run at the University of Plymout

    Charges in Gauge Theories

In this article we investigate charged particles in gauge theories. After reviewing the physical and theoretical problems, a method to construct charged particles is presented. Explicit solutions are found in the Abelian theory and a physical interpretation is given. These solutions and our interpretation of these variables as the true degrees of freedom for charged particles, are then tested in the perturbative domain and are demonstrated to yield infra-red finite, on-shell Green's functions at all orders of perturbation theory. The extension to collinear divergences is studied and it is shown that this method applies to the case of massless charged particles. The application of these constructions to the charged sectors of the standard model is reviewed and we conclude with a discussion of the successes achieved so far in this programme and a list of open questions.Comment: 47 pages, LaTeX, 14 figures, uses feynmp, necessary Metapost files included. Is the ground state of Yang-Mills theory Coulombic?

    Get PDF
We study trial states modelling the heavy quark-antiquark ground state in SU(2) Yang-Mills theory. A state describing the flux tube between quarks as a thin string of glue is found to be a poor description of the continuum ground state; the infinitesimal thickness of the string leads to UV artifacts which suppress the overlap with the ground state. Contrastingly, a state which surrounds the quarks with non-abelian Coulomb fields is found to have a good overlap with the ground state for all charge separations. In fact, the overlap increases as the lattice regulator is removed. This opens up the possibility that the Coulomb state is the true ground state in the continuum limit.Comment: 10 pages, 9 .eps figure

New Gauge Invariant Formulation of the Chern-Simons Gauge Theory

    Get PDF
A new gauge invariant formulation of the relativistic scalar field interacting with Chern-Simons gauge fields is considered. This formulation is consistent with the gauge fixed formulation. Furthermore we find that canonical (Noether) Poincar\'e generators are not gauge invariant even on the constraints surface and do not satisfy the (classical) Poincar\'e algebra. It is the improved generators, constructed from the symmetric energy-momentum tensor, which are (manifestly) gauge invariant and obey the classical Poincar\'e algebra.Comment: Shortened, to appear as Papid Communication-PRD/Nov/9
