    Fiscal discipline and the cost of public dept service: some estiames for OECD countries

    We use a panel of 16 OECD countries over several decades to investigate the effects of government debts and deficits on long-term interest rates. In simple static specifications, a one-percentage-point increase in the primary deficit relative to GDP increases contemporaneous long-term interest rates by about 10 basis points. In a vector autoregression (VAR), the same shock leads to a cumulative increase of almost 150 basis points after 10 years. The effect of debt on interest rates is non-linear: only for countries with above-average levels of debt does an increase in debt affect the interest rate. World fiscal policy is also important: an increase in total OECD-government borrowing increases each country's interest rates. However, domestic fiscal policy continues to affect domestic interest rates even after controlling for worldwide debts and deficits.     The Relationship between Grade-Level and Breakfast Skipping among Adolescents: The Mediating Effects of Dietary Autonomy

    Breakfast skipping among adolescents in the United States is a public health issue because it has adverse consequences on dietary intake and body mass index. The primary aim of this study is to examine the relationship between grade level and reported breakfast skipping among adolescents and whether it is mediated by dietary autonomy. Analyses were based on self-reported data from Wave I of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, a nationally representative sample of adolescents in the United States surveyed in 1995. Logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the effects of grade level and dietary autonomy on adolescents’ reported breakfast skipping. Following MacKinnon and Dwyer, we tested whether the effect of grade level on breakfast skipping was mediated by adolescents’ dietary autonomy. After controlling for sex, race, exercise, parental education, and household income, both grade level (OR = 2.005, 95% CI = 1.684-2.387) and dietary autonomy (OR = 1.435, 95% CI = 1.157-1.780) were each significant predictors of breakfast skipping when tested separately. Mediation analysis showed that dietary autonomy partially mediated the relationship between grade-level and breakfast skipping. Since adolescents in higher grades and those with more dietary autonomy are more likely to skip breakfast, nutritional messages may need to continue beyond the lower grades and emphasize that healthy eating habits can demonstrate autonomy

    Rate coefficient for the reaction of Cl atoms with cis-3-hexene at 296 ± 2 K

    The rate coefficient of the cis-3-hexene + Cl atoms reaction at 296 ± 2 K and 750 ± 10 Torr was determined using the relative rate technique. The reaction was investigated using an 80 L Teflon reaction bag and a gas chromatograph coupled with flame-ionization detection. Chlorine atoms were produced by the photolysis of trichloroacetyl chloride. No previous experimental data was available in the literature, to the best of our knowledge. The mean second-order rate coefficient value found was (4.13 ± 0.51) × 10-10 cm3 molecule-1 s-1. The experimental value agrees with the rate coefficient estimated by structure-reactivity analysis, 4.27 × 10-10 cm3 molecule-1 s-1. Moreover, both addition and hydrogen abstraction channels contribute to the global kinetics, with branching ratios 70:30. Effective lifetime with respect to Cl atoms is predicted as 67.2 hours; however, the cis-3-hexene + Cl channel is suggested to be non-negligible at atmospheric conditions.     Abstract only availablePioneering techniques for therapeutic treatment of cancers involve targeting cancer sites with strong beta-emitting radionuclides, thereby destroying the cancer cells. This is achieved by coordinating the radioisotope to a very chemically stable environment and linking it to a specific biologically active targeting molecule, which interacts with particular cancer cells. Radioactive isotopes of rhenium possess characteristics of such a nuclide. The focus of our research is to investigate two possible pathways for the reaction of [ReOX(Schiff base)] with phosphine ligands, one a mono-substituted ReV complex and one a di-substituted ReIII complex. The preferred ReIII complex is lower in oxidation state and more kinetically inert or stable relative to ReV. For practical applications it is necessary to have an extremely stable in vivo radionuclide complex which can be conjugated to a suitable biological targeting agent. The rigid sal2phen ligand, where Sal2phen is a tetradentate Schiff base ligand, was investigated to determine if the ReIII could be synthesized from the ReV starting complex [ReVOCl(Sal2phen)]. [ReVOCl(Sal2phen)] was reacted with triethylphosphine (PEt3) in attempts to yield the ReIII complex trans-[ReIII(PEt3)2(Sal2phen)][X]. Previous work indicated that the strongly reducing and strongly nucleophilic PEt3 might yield the ReV product from [ReVOCl(Sal2phen)]. The synthesized coordinated complex was reacted with an quaternary ammonium salt, ammonium hexaflurophosphate (NH4PF6), to induce crystallization of target compound [ReIII(PEt3)2(Sal2phen)][PF6]. Preliminary 1H-NMR, 31P-NMR, and infrared spectroscopy spectra indicate the formation of cis-[ReVO(PPh3)(Sal2phen)][X]. FTIR shows the presence of the Rhenium oxo group; 31P-NMR and 1H-NMR indicate the presence of ReV and a 1:1 PEt3 : Sal2phen complex.     Abstract only availableOne approach to the treatment of cancer is to direct beta-emitting radionuclide to the cancer site where the radiation destroys the cancer cells. This can be achieved by coordinating the radioisotope in a very stable environment and linking it to a specific biological targeting molecule, which interacts specifically with particular cancer cells. It is necessary to have extremely stable in vivo radionuclide complexes so that limited amounts of radiation are released to other parts of the body before the radionuclide can reach the cancer cells. Isotopes of radioactive Rhenium are characteristic of such a nuclide. Our emphasis was to obtain a Rhenium (III) metal ligand complex since the lower oxidation state is more kinetically inert relative to Rhenium (V). The method employed was to first produce the ReV-ligand complex, [ReVOCl(Sal2phen)], by reacting a 1:2 molar ratio of TBA[ReVIIOCl4] to Sal2phen. Next, [ReVOCl(Sal2phen)] was reacted with three equivalents of triphenylphosphine to determine whether a mono-substituted ReV complex or a di-substituted ReIII complex was formed. After purifying the product by solvent extraction, the coordinated complex was reacted with ammonium hexaflurophoshate, NH4PF6, to induce crystallization of the target compound, [ReIII(PPh3)2(Sal2phen)][PF6]. Preliminary 1H NMR, and FT-IT spectra suggest formation of trans-[ReIII(PPh3)2(sal2phen)]PF6. The Re=O stretch at 951.36 cm-1 observed for [ReOCl(sal2phen)] in the IR spectrum is missing from our product, implying the Re (III) product has been formed.Stevens' Chemistry Progra

    Corynebacterium diphtheriae endocarditis

    The authors report the case of a 69-year-old man with an acute toxemic and febrile syndrome. Immediately after admission, the patient’s mental status rapidly deteriorated. A faint mitral systolic murmur was detected and splenomegaly wasobserved on ultrasound examination. Laboratory screening revealed azotemia, AST and ALT elevation, leukocytosis, thrombocytopenia, elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate as well as C-reactive-protein. Urinalysis showed proteinuria,leukocyturia and hematuria. A transesophageal echocardiogram showed large vegetations attached to both mitral leaflets with mild regurgitation. Blood culture yielded slow-growing Gram-positive bacillus which was later identified as a nontoxigenic Corynebacterium diphtheriae sorovar gravis. The authors emphasize the importance of identifying any bacteria isolated in blood samples particularly when an infective endocarditis diagnosis is suspected and call attention to theincreasing number of reports related to this pathogen.
