Lightest scalars as chiral partners of the Nambu--Goldstone bosons
We review the spectrum of lightest scalar resonances recently determined
using dispersion techniques. The conceptual difference between the pole mass
and the bare mass (or the line--shape mass) is stressed. The nature of the
lightest scalars are discussed and we argue, without relying on any model
details, that the , , and may
be understood as chiral partners of the Nambu--Goldstone bosons in the linear
realization of chiral symmetry. But there remains some difficulties in

Persistence Probabilities of the German DAX and Shanghai Index
We present a relatively detailed analysis of the persistence probability
distributions in financial dynamics. Compared with the auto-correlation
function, the persistence probability distributions describe dynamic
correlations non-local in time. Universal and non-universal behaviors of the
German DAX and Shanghai Index are analyzed, and numerical simulations of some
microscopic models are also performed. Around the fixed point , the
interacting herding model produces the scaling behavior of the real markets
Identification of rice chromosome segment substitution line Z322-1-10 and mapping QTLs for agronomic traits from the F<sub>3</sub> population
Chromosome segment substitution lines (CSSLs) are powerful tools to combine naturally occurring genetic variants with favorable alleles in the same genetic backgrounds of elite cultivars. An elite CSSL Z322-1-10 was identified from advanced backcrosses between a japonica cultivar Nipponbare and an elite indica restorer Xihui 18 by SSR marker-assisted selection (MAS). The Z322-1-10 line carries five substitution segments distributed on chromosomes 1, 2, 5, 6 and 10 with an average length of 4.80 Mb. Spikilets per panicle, 1000-grain weight, grain length in the Z322-1-10 line are significantly higher than those in Nipponbare. Quantitative trait loci (QTLs) were identified and mapped for nine agronomic traits in an F3 population derived from the cross between Nipponbare and Z322-1-10 using the restricted maximum likelihood (REML) method in the HPMIXED procedure of SAS. We detected 13 QTLs whose effect ranging from 2.45% to 44.17% in terms of phenotypic variance explained. Of the 13 loci detected, three are major QTL (qGL1, qGW5-1 and qRLW5-1) and they explain 34.68%, 44.17% and 33.05% of the phenotypic variance. The qGL1 locus controls grain length with a typical Mendelian dominance inheritance of 3:1 ratio for long grain to short grain. The already cloned QTL qGW5-1 is linked with a minor QTL for grain width qGW5-2 (13.01%) in the same substitution segment. Similarly, the previously reported qRLW5-1 is also linked with a minor QTL qRLW5-2. Not only the study is important for fine mapping and cloning of the gene qGL1, but also has a great potential for molecular breeding
Droplet entrainment within the evaporator to the suitable volume-filling ratio of a vertical two-phase closed thermosyphon
The present study on vertical two-phase closed thermosyphon (TPCT) is aimed to determine the suitable volume-filling ratio, as a function of geometries, heat flux and vapor temperature, in order to avoid the potential local dryout in the evaporator section and hence to maximize the performance. In the study, the droplet entrainment, which is caused by the internal counter flow during the nucleate boiling within the falling liquid film in the evaporator section, is introduced to improve the existing TPCT model, so a comprehensive model with considering all three heat transfer regimes in the evaporator is further established. The suggested lower and upper limits of volume-filling ratio (CFR and EFR) are then determined by utilizing the criterias for local dryout, flooding limit and boiling limit. Furthermore, the effects of geometries, heat flux and vapor temperature on the range of volume-filling ratio are analyzed in details, a simplified correlation of CFR is then proposed based on the numerical modeling results. Particularly, the predictions of the distribution of falling film thickness and onset of flooding are validated with the published experimental data and other numerical simulation results. It is also found that the droplet entrainment significantly influences the thickness and distribution of the falling film. Increasing vapor temperature and inner diameter and decreasing the evaporator length significantly enlarge the volume-filling ratio range (between CFR and EFR), operation envelope (corresponding to boiling limit and flooding limit) of TPCT. Increasing the condenser length increases the volume-filling ratio range and operation envelope to a small extent. The influence mechanisms of the optimum filling ratio by the heat flux and geometries are complicated; however, a correlation of CFR can be obtained in a good agreement with the numerical modeling results within 30% deviation for the whole limited scope

The roles of sulfuric acid in new particle formation and growth in the mega-city of Beijing
Simultaneous measurements of gaseous sulfuric acid and particle number size distributions were performed to investigate aerosol nucleation and growth during CAREBeijing-2008. The analysis of the measured aerosols and sulfuric acid with an aerosol dynamic model shows the dominant role of sulfuric acid in new particle formation (NPF) process but also in the subsequent growth in Beijing. Based on the data of twelve NPF events, the average formation rates (2–13 cm−3 s−1) show a linear correlation with the sulfuric acid concentrations (R2=0.85). Coagulation seems to play a significant role in reducing the number concentration of nucleation mode particles with the ratio of the coagulation loss to formation rate being 0.41±0.16. The apparent growth rates vary from 3 to 11 nm h−1. Condensation of sulfuric acid and its subsequent neutralization by ammonia and coagulation contribute to the apparent particle growth on average 45±18% and 34±17%, respectively. The 30% higher concentration of sulfate than organic compounds in particles during the seven sulfur-rich NPF events but 20% lower concentration of sulfate during the five sulfur-poor type suggest that organic compounds are an important contributor to the growth of the freshly nucleated particles, especially during the sulfur-poor cases
Carbon Nanotubes as Nanoelectromechanical Systems
We theoretically study the interplay between electrical and mechanical
properties of suspended, doubly clamped carbon nanotubes in which charging
effects dominate. In this geometry, the capacitance between the nanotube and
the gate(s) depends on the distance between them. This dependence modifies the
usual Coulomb models and we show that it needs to be incorporated to capture
the physics of the problem correctly. We find that the tube position changes in
discrete steps every time an electron tunnels onto it. Edges of Coulomb
diamonds acquire a (small) curvature. We also show that bistability in the tube
position occurs and that tunneling of an electron onto the tube drastically
modifies the quantized eigenmodes of the tube. Experimental verification of

Measurements of the observed cross sections for exclusive light hadron production in e^+e^- annihilation at \sqrt{s}= 3.773 and 3.650 GeV
By analyzing the data sets of 17.3 pb taken at GeV
and 6.5 pb taken at GeV with the BESII detector at the
BEPC collider, we have measured the observed cross sections for 12 exclusive
light hadron final states produced in annihilation at the two energy
points. We have also set the upper limits on the observed cross sections and
the branching fractions for decay to these final states at 90%

We report on a search for the decays J/Psi --> Ds- e+ nu_e + c.c., J/Psi -->
D- e+ nu_e + c.c., and J/Psi --> D0bar e+ e- + c.c. in a sample of 5.8 * 10^7
J/Psi events collected with the BESII detector at the BEPC. No excess of signal
above background is observed, and 90% confidence level upper limits on the
