Impact of representational systems on color selections for graphic user interfaces
This paper is based on a study involving representational systems and color preference on graphic user interfaces (GUI). The study is an extension of a general exploratory experiment (GEE) conducted in October of 1993, wherein individuals` favored sensory representational systems (visual, auditory and kinesthetic) (FRS) were compared to their GUI comfort parameters. The results of the study show that an individual`s FRS is a significant factor in their acceptance of a GUI design, and that further in-depth study of the various display attributes to an individual`s FRS is required. This research is the first in the series of follow-up studies to be conducted regarding specific characteristics of GUI (i.e., fonts, character density, etc.) with respect to an individual`s FRS. Eta absorption by mesons
Using the chiral Lagrangian with hidden local
symmetry, we evaluate the cross sections for the absorption of eta meson () by pion (), rho (), omega (), kaon (), and kaon
star () in the tree-level approximation. With empirical masses and
coupling constants as well as reasonable values for the cutoff parameter in the
form factors at interaction vertices, we find that most cross sections are less
than 1 mb, except the reactions ,
, , and , which are a few mb, and the reactions and , which are more than 10 mb. Including these reactions in a kinetic model
based on a schematic hydrodynamic description of relativistic heavy ion
collisions, we find that the abundance of eta mesons likely reaches chemical
equilibrium with other hadrons in nuclear collisions at the Relativistic Heavy

Colour analysis and verification of CCTV images under different lighting conditions
Colour information is not faithfully maintained by a CCTV imaging chain. Since colour can play an important role in identifying objects it is beneficial to be able to account accurately for changes to colour introduced by components in the chain. With this information it will be possible for law enforcement agencies and others to work back along the imaging chain to extract accurate colour information from CCTV recordings.
A typical CCTV system has an imaging chain that may consist of scene, camera, compression, recording media and display. The response of each of these stages to colour scene information was characterised by measuring its response to a known input. The main variables that affect colour within a scene are illumination and the colour, orientation and texture of objects. The effects of illumination on the appearance of colour of a variety of test targets were tested using laboratory-based lighting, street lighting, car headlights and artificial daylight. A range of typical cameras used in CCTV applications, common compression schemes and representative displays were also characterised
A global survey of the societal benefits of trophy hunting in Africa
African trophy hunting is controversial. Central to the debate on this practice is whether it may be justified by any broader provisions to African society. These typically include meat supply to poor communities, problem animal control, and the funding of conservation and community development. The societal role of African hunting is as contested as the practice itself, with proponents advocating for the benefits of hunting, while critics point to these being inadequate. Little is known about the role of location and demography in the debate on hunting benefits. Here we circulated an anonymous online survey through our international networks. We asked respondents to indicate which (if any) benefits they thought may justify the practice and whether they supported African trophy hunting, or not. We also collected data on respondent geographic location, age, gender, and employment within conservation. The 5755 responses were analysed using multiple correspondence analysis and provided strong evidence for an association between the level of support/rejection of trophy hunting and potential benefits that were perceived to justify the practice. Funding of wildlife conservation through hunting was the most frequently selected benefit, even among many respondents with a neutral or slightly negative view toward trophy hunting as a practice. Respondents strongly opposed to trophy hunting were more likely to reject all societal benefits of hunting. There was some divergence in views between Africa-based respondents, and those outside of Africa. We suggest that any policy development on African trophy hunting be required to incorporate the views of all African stakeholders
Ring chromosome 20
Ring Chromosome 20 syndrome is a rare chromosomal disorder characterized by refractory epilepsy, with seizures in wakefulness and sleep, behavioral problems and mild to severe cognitive impairment. Facial dysmorphism or other congenital malformations are rarely reported making it difficult to diagnose the syndrome based on clinical findings alone. Therefore, diagnosis requires cytogenetic testing. More than 100 cases have been published since the initial report in 1972. In some patients, the ring (20) is found in all cells analyzed and in these cases, the ring is almost always accompanied by deletions of 20pter and/or 20qter. However, in the majority of cases the ring is present in only a proportion of cells, with two normal 20's in the remaining cells (mosaicism), and in these cases, no deletions of chromosome 20 have been observed. Patients with supernumerary r(20) chromosomes have also been identified, but these individuals do not generally have seizures and are not discussed in this review. Characterization by fluorescence in situ hybridization and array-based analysis has shed insight into the molecular composition and possible mechanisms of ring formation, in both the mosaic and non-mosaic patients. The age of onset of seizures correlates with the percentage of cells with the ring in mosaic patients. While the underlying etiology of the phenotype is still not understood, evidence is accumulating which suggests the deletion of candidate genes on chromosome 20 is not responsible. Cytogenetic analysis, rather than chromosomal microarray analysis is recommended for diagnosis of this syndrome, as the mosaic cases do not have copy number alterations and are therefore not identified by array-based analysis
Epistemic and social scripts in computer-supported collaborative learning
Collaborative learning in computer-supported learning environments typically means that learners work on tasks together, discussing their individual perspectives via text-based media or videoconferencing, and consequently acquire knowledge. Collaborative learning, however, is often sub-optimal with respect to how learners work on the concepts that are supposed to be learned and how learners interact with each other. One possibility to improve collaborative learning environments is to conceptualize epistemic scripts, which specify how learners work on a given task, and social scripts, which structure how learners interact with each other. In this contribution, two studies will be reported that investigated the effects of epistemic and social scripts in a text-based computer-supported learning environment and in a videoconferencing learning environment in order to foster the individual acquisition of knowledge. In each study the factors ‘epistemic script’ and ‘social script’ have been independently varied in a 2×2-factorial design. 182 university students of Educational Science participated in these two studies. Results of both studies show that social scripts can be substantially beneficial with respect to the individual acquisition of knowledge, whereas epistemic scripts apparently do not to lead to the expected effects
A LOW COST PHYSICS AND ENGINEERING TRAINING REACTOR. Reactor Design and Feasibility Study
The conceptual design of a low cost training reactor for the instruction of physicists and engineers is covered. It is conceived as an instructional tool for a course such as that given at the Oak Ridge School of Reactor Technology. The reactor is of a modified pool type, and is designed for a maximum power level of one Mw. This arrangement will accommodate engineering experiments, shielding experiments, and critical experiments as well as being useful as a neutron and gamma source. (auth
Method for the fast determination of bromate, nitrate and nitrite by ultra performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry and their monitoring in Saudi Arabian drinking water with chemometric data treatment
A rapid, sensitive and precise method for the determination of bromate (BrO3(-)), nitrate (NO3(-)) and nitrite (NO2(-)) in drinking water was developed with Ultra performance Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (UPLC-ESI/MS). The elution of BrO3(-), NO3(-) and NO2(-) was attained in less than two minutes in a reverse phase column. Quality parameters of the method were established; run-to-run and day-to-day precisions were <3% when analysing standards at 10µgL(-1). The limit of detection was 0.04µg NO2(-)L(-1) and 0.03µgL(-1) for both NO3(-)and BrO3(-). The developed UPLC-ESI/MS method was used to quantify these anions in metropolitan water from Saudi Arabia (Jeddah, Dammam and Riyadh areas) and commercial bottled water (from well or unknown source) after mere filtration steps. The quantified levels of NO3(-) were not found to pose a risk. In contrast, BrO3(-) was found above the maximum contaminant level established by the US Environmental Protection Agency in 25% and 33% of the bottled and metropolitan waters, respectively. NO2(-) was found at higher concentrations than the aforementioned limits in 70% and 92% of the bottled and metropolitan water samples, respectively. Therefore, remediation measures or improvements in the disinfection treatments are required. The concentrations of BrO3(-), NO3(-) and NO2(-) were mapped with Principal Component analysis (PCA), which differentiated metropolitan water from bottled water through the concentrations of BrO3(-) and NO3(-) mainly. Furthermore, it was possible to discriminate between well water; blend of well water and desalinated water; and desalinated water. The point or source (region) was found to not be distinctive
Non Linear Current Response of a Many-Level Tunneling System: Higher Harmonics Generation
The fully nonlinear response of a many-level tunneling system to a strong
alternating field of high frequency is studied in terms of the
Schwinger-Keldysh nonequilibrium Green functions. The nonlinear time dependent
tunneling current is calculated exactly and its resonance structure is
elucidated. In particular, it is shown that under certain reasonable conditions
on the physical parameters, the Fourier component is sharply peaked at
, where is the spacing between
two levels. This frequency multiplication results from the highly nonlinear
process of photon absorption (or emission) by the tunneling system. It is
also conjectured that this effect (which so far is studied mainly in the
