Right-handed Electrons in Radiative Muon Decay
Electrons emitted in the radiative decay mu^- -> e^- anti-nu_e nu_mu gamma
have a significant probability of being right-handed, even in the limit m_e ->
0. Such ``wrong-helicity'' electrons, arising from helicity-flip
bremsstrahlung, contribute an amount alpha/(4 pi) Gamma_0 to the muon decay
width (Gamma_0 = G_F^2 m^5_mu/ (192 pi^3)). We use the helicity-flip splitting
function D_hf (z) of Falk and Sehgal (Phys. Lett. B 325, 509 (1994)) to obtain
the spectrum of the right-handed electrons and the photons that accompany them.
For a minimum photon energy E_gamma = 10 MeV (20 MeV), approximately 4% (7%) of
electrons in radiative mu-decay are right-handed.Comment: 8pages, 2 figures; v2: small correction in para (ii) of summar
Re-verification of a Lip Synchronization Protocol using Robust Reachability
The timed automata formalism is an important model for specifying and
analysing real-time systems. Robustness is the correctness of the model in the
presence of small drifts on clocks or imprecision in testing guards. A symbolic
algorithm for the analysis of the robustness of timed automata has been
implemented. In this paper, we re-analyse an industrial case lip
synchronization protocol using the new robust reachability algorithm. This lip
synchronization protocol is an interesting case because timing aspects are
crucial for the correctness of the protocol. Several versions of the model are
considered: with an ideal video stream, with anchored jitter, and with
non-anchored jitter
Risico-, versterkende en beschermende factoren voor crimineel gedrag
This research report, commissioned by the municipality of Rotterdam, summarizes the current scientific knowledge about the most important factors that increase or decrease the probability to become involved in criminal behaviour. Based on information from existing meta-analyses, systematic reviews and overview studies, we identify which risk-, promotive and protective factors have been found in robust empirical studies, and how strong they are associated with four different types of criminal behaviour: general offending, juvenile delinquency crime, cybercrime and involvement in organized crime. We distinguish factors connected to five domains: personal characteristics, the family, peers and groups, school/work and contextual/neighborhood factors
Oscillations of a solid sphere falling through a wormlike micellar fluid
We present an experimental study of the motion of a solid sphere falling
through a wormlike micellar fluid. While smaller or lighter spheres quickly
reach a terminal velocity, larger or heavier spheres are found to oscillate in
the direction of their falling motion. The onset of this instability correlates
with a critical value of the velocity gradient scale
s. We relate this condition to the known complex rheology of wormlike
micellar fluids, and suggest that the unsteady motion of the sphere is caused
by the formation and breaking of flow-induced structures.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Magnetoelectric ordering of BiFeO3 from the perspective of crystal chemistry
In this paper we examine the role of crystal chemistry factors in creating
conditions for formation of magnetoelectric ordering in BiFeO3. It is generally
accepted that the main reason of the ferroelectric distortion in BiFeO3 is
concerned with a stereochemical activity of the Bi lone pair. However, the lone
pair is stereochemically active in the paraelectric orthorhombic beta-phase as
well. We demonstrate that a crucial role in emerging of phase transitions of
the metal-insulator, paraelectric-ferroelectric and magnetic disorder-order
types belongs to the change of the degree of the lone pair stereochemical
activity - its consecutive increase with the temperature decrease. Using the
structural data, we calculated the sign and strength of magnetic couplings in
BiFeO3 in the range from 945 C down to 25 C and found the couplings, which
undergo the antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic transition with the temperature
decrease and give rise to the antiferromagnetic ordering and its delay in
regard to temperature, as compared to the ferroelectric ordering. We discuss
the reasons of emerging of the spatially modulated spin structure and its
suppression by doping with La3+.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures, 3 table
Lag time and parameter mismatches in synchronization of unidirectionally coupled chaotic external cavity semiconductor lasers
We report an analysis of synchronization between two unidirectionally coupled
chaotic external cavity master/slave semiconductor lasers with two
characteristic delay times, where the delay time in the coupling is different
from the delay time in the coupled systems themselves. We demonstrate for the
first time that parameter mismatches in photon decay rates for the master and
slave lasers can explain the experimental observation that the lag time is
equal to the coupling delay time.Comment: LaTex, 5 pages, submitted to PRE(R
FAIR Practices in Africa
This article investigates expansion of the Internet of FAIR Data and Services (IFDS) to Africa, through the three GO FAIR pillars: GO CHANGE, GO BUILD and GO TRAIN. Introduction of the IFDS in Africa has a focus on digital health. Two examples of introducing FAIR are compared: a regional initiative for digital health by governments in the East Africa Community (EAC) and an initiative by a local health provider (Solidarmed) in collaboration with Great Zimbabwe University in Zimbabwe. The obstacles to introducing FAIR are identified as underrepresentation of data from Africa in IFDS at this moment, the lack of explicit recognition of situational context of research in FAIR at present and the lack of acceptability of FAIR as a foreign and European invention which affects acceptance. It is envisaged that FAIR has an important contribution to solve fragmentation in digital health in Africa, and that any obstacles concerning African participation, context relevance and acceptance of IFDS need to be removed. This will require involvement of African researchers and ICT-developers so that it is driven by local ownership. Assessment of ecological validity in FAIR principles would ensure that the context specificity of research is reflected in the FAIR principles. This will help enhance the acceptance of the FAIR Guidelines in Africa and will help strengthen digital health research and services. Computer Systems, Imagery and Medi
Association between composition of the human gastrointestinal microbiome and development of fatty liver with choline deficiency
Background & Aims: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease affects up to 30% of the US population, but the mechanisms underlying this condition are incompletely understood. We investigated how diet standardization and choline deficiency influence the composition of the microbial community in the human gastrointestinal tract and the development of fatty liver under conditions of choline deficiency. Methods: We performed a 2-month inpatient study of 15 female subjects who were placed on well-controlled diets in which choline levels were manipulated. We used 454-FLX pyrosequencing of 16S ribosomal RNA bacterial genes to characterize microbiota in stool samples collected over the course of the study. Results: The compositions of the gastrointestinal microbial communities changed with choline levels of diets; each individual's microbiome remained distinct for the duration of the experiment, even though all subjects were fed identical diets. Variations between subjects in levels of Gammaproteobacteria and Erysipelotrichi were directly associated with changes in liver fat in each subject during choline depletion. Levels of these bacteria, change in amount of liver fat, and a single nucleotide polymorphism that affects choline were combined into a model that accurately predicted the degree to which subjects developed fatty liver on a choline-deficient diet. Conclusions: Host factors and gastrointestinal bacteria each respond to dietary choline deficiency, although the gut microbiota remains distinct in each individual. We identified bacterial biomarkers of fatty liver that result from choline deficiency, adding to the accumulating evidence that gastrointestinal microbes have a role in metabolic disorders
Neutral weak currents in pion electroproduction on the nucleon
Parity violating asymmetry in inclusive scattering of longitudinally
polarized electrons by unpolarized protons with or meson
production, is calculated as a function of the momentum transfer squared
and the total energy of the -system. This asymmetry, which is
induced by the interference of the one-photon exchange amplitude with the
parity-odd part of the -exchange amplitude, is calculated for the
processes ( is a virtual photon and
a virtual Z-boson) considering the -contribution in the channel,
the standard Born contributions and vector meson ( and )
exchanges in the channel. Taking into account the known isotopic properties
of the hadron electromagnetic and neutral currents, we show that the P-odd term
is the sum of two contributions. The main term is model independent and it can
be calculated exactly in terms of fundamental constants. It is found to be
linear in . The second term is a relatively small correction which is
determined by the isoscalar component of the electromagnetic current. Near
threshold and in the -region, this isoscalar part is much smaller (in
absolute value) than the isovector one: its contribution to the asymmetry
depend on the polarization state (longitudinal or transverse) of the virtual
photon.Comment: 30 pages 9 figure
