Earth-based radar contribution to Mars sample return
Earth based radar has often observed planets decades before space missions and provided valuable information leading to the success of those missions. As a Mars Sample Return Mission is contemplated, possible measurements by earth based radar should be reviewed. Earth based radars provide measurements of topography, bulk dielectric constants, rms slopes, and surface rock populations. All of these measurement will be valuable to a Mars Sample Return Mission. The 1988 and 1990 oppositions provide excellent positions for the extension of southern earth based coverage of Mars to -25 deg, while oppositions for the rest of the 1990's will provide coverage of northern latitudes to 25 deg
QCGAT mixer compound exhaust system design and static big model test report
A mixer exhaust system was designed to meet the proposed performance and exhaust jet noise goals for the AiResearch QCGAT engine. Some 0.35 scale models of the various nozzles were fabricated and aerodynamically and acoustically tested. Preliminary optimization, engine cycle matching, model test data and analysis are presented. A final mixer exhaust system is selected for optimum performance for the overall flight regime
Constraints on Neutron Star Crusts From Oscillations in Giant Flares
We show that the fundamental seismic shear mode, observed as a quasi-periodic
oscillation in giant flares emitted by highly-magnetized neutron stars, is
particularly sensitive to the nuclear physics of the crust. The identification
of an oscillation at ~ 30 Hz as the fundamental crustal shear mode requires a
nuclear symmetry energy that depends very weakly on density near saturation. If
the nuclear symmetry energy varies more strongly with density, then lower
frequency oscillations, previously identified as torsional Alfven modes of the
fluid core, could instead be associated with the crust. If this is the case,
then future observations of giant flares should detect oscillations at around
18 Hz. An accurate measurement of the neutron skin thickness of lead will also

Study of critical defects in ablative heat shield systems for the space shuttle
Results are presented from an investigation to determine the effects of fabrication-induced defects on the performance of an ablative heat shield material in a simulated space shuttle reentry environment. Nondestructive methods for detecting the defects were investigated. The material considered is a fiber-filled, honeycomb-reinforced, low-density elastomer. Results were obtained for density variations, voids, fiber bundles, crushed honeycomb, undercut honeycomb, unbonded areas, face sheet delaminations, and cure variations. The data indicate that, within reasonable tolerances, the fabrication defects investigated are not critical in terms of reentry performance of the heat shield
