    poster abstractThe research conducted is to explain the stylistic changes that occurred in Albrecht Dürer’s art during the transitioning period from medieval to Renaissance. By acquiring Dürer’s Nachlass [private diary] from the IU Lily Library and reading literature from the top medieval and Renaissance specialists, such as David Price, Andrew Morrall, and Erwin Panofsky, the influence stemmed from Dürer’s new found faith in Lutheranism. No longer did Dürer focus solely on monograms, he introduced the art of triptychs. Studies believe that Dürer only created triptychs while working in Giovanni Bellini’s workshop, but this study allots reasoning to the Reformation

    Optics and Visio Dei: interpretations of female mystic Art

    Religious visions are personal experiences in which individuals have a sensory experience that is in some way supernatural or divine. In the context of medieval Christianity, true visionaries were understood to have received revelations directly from God, without mediation from priests. In the tradition of the medieval Church and society, women were relegated to a subordinate role; thus, when the mystic who experienced a vision from God was a woman, the situation required careful interpretation, for in bypassing the intermediary authority of the priest, the woman was potentially subverting a hierarchy which itself was considered to have been established by God. This paper will analyze one of the most important medieval mystics, Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179), and examine her writings and her images produced in Scivias. It is hypothesized that the medieval ideas of optics and biblical exegesis worked in harmony to structure Hildegard's experiences and to legitimize those experiences to others at the time. In this paper, key images created by Hildegard were analyzed to interpret the descriptions of her experiences and their rendering in visual form in relation to the medieval theories of vision and theology itself.     Beta-2 microglobulin as a predictor of peripheral arterial disease in diabetes: The effect of estimated glomerular filtration

    Background: Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is common in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Its definitive diagnosis requires ultrasound or angiography. Beta-2 microglobulin (â2 microglobulin) has been proposed as a diagnostic marker for PAD. The objective of the study was to evaluate the diagnostic value of â2 microglobulin for PAD in patients with diabetes and varying renal function.Design: This was a cross-sectional study.Setting: An academic centre (University of Pretoria and Steve Biko  Academic Hospital Diabetes Clinic).Subjects: One hundred and eight convenience-sampled patients.Outcome measures: Patients completed a questionnaire and had toe and arm blood pressure (toe-arm index), as well as serum â2 microglobulin and creatinine, measured.Results: Beta-2 microglobulin did not differ (p-value = 0.34) between those subjects with PAD (n = 43) and those without PAD (n = 65). In a linear regression model, the interaction term between estimated  glomerular filtration rate categories and the inverse of â2 microglobulin was highly significant (p-value = 0.001).Conclusion: Although the sample size was small, â2 microglobulin did not distinguish between subjects with and without PAD.     The Perceived Intrinsic Value of Leisure Reading & Leisure Among Undergraduates as a Predictor of Their Academic Achievement

    poster abstractThe purpose of this study is to 1) explore the intrinsic values of leisure reading among undergraduates, 2) explore their intrinsic values toward leisure activities, and 3) explore how their leisure reading and leisure activities predict academic success. The research question addresses the following: Is there a correlation between educational attainment (GPA) among IUPUI undergraduates as reflected by their leisure reading and leisure activity satisfaction scores? It is hypothesized that students with high satisfaction scores in recreational reading or leisure activities or both predicts academic success as measured by their cumulative GPA via OneStart. A convenient survey sampling methodology was used to collect the data from students with a class standing of sophomore and higher. This research study is currently in data collection phase and preliminary analysis is expected in April. To our knowledge no study has investigated the relationship of leisure reading and leisure activities among IUPUI undergraduates as a predictor of academic success

    Shifting attention in viewer- and object-based reference frames after unilateral brain injury

    The aims of the present study were to investigate the respective roles that object- and viewer-based reference frames play in reorienting visual attention, and to assess their influence after unilateral brain injury. To do so, we studied 16 right hemisphere injured (RHI) and 13 left hemisphere injured (LHI) patients. We used a cueing design that manipulates the location of cues and targets relative to a display comprised of two rectangles (i.e., objects). Unlike previous studies with patients, we presented all cues at midline rather than in the left or right visual fields. Thus, in the critical conditions in which targets were presented laterally, reorienting of attention was always from a midline cue. Performance was measured for lateralized target detection as a function of viewer-based (contra- and ipsilesional sides) and object-based (requiring reorienting within or between objects) reference frames. As expected, contralesional detection was slower than ipsilesional detection for the patients. More importantly, objects influenced target detection differently in the contralesional and ipsilesional fields. Contralesionally, reorienting to a target within the cued object took longer than reorienting to a target in the same location but in the uncued object. This finding is consistent with object-based neglect. Ipsilesionally, the means were in the opposite direction. Furthermore, no significant difference was found in object-based influences between the patient groups (RHI vs. LHI). These findings are discussed in the context of reference frames used in reorienting attention for target detection

    On the derivative of the associated Legendre function of the first kind of integer order with respect to its degree

    In our recent works [R. Szmytkowski, J. Phys. A 39 (2006) 15147; corrigendum: 40 (2007) 7819; addendum: 40 (2007) 14887], we have investigated the derivative of the Legendre function of the first kind, Pν(z)P_{\nu}(z), with respect to its degree ν\nu. In the present work, we extend these studies and construct several representations of the derivative of the associated Legendre function of the first kind, Pν±m(z)P_{\nu}^{\pm m}(z), with respect to the degree ν\nu, for m∈Nm\in\mathbb{N}. At first, we establish several contour-integral representations of ∂Pν±m(z)/∂ν\partial P_{\nu}^{\pm m}(z)/\partial\nu. They are then used to derive Rodrigues-type formulas for [∂Pν±m(z)/∂ν]ν=n[\partial P_{\nu}^{\pm m}(z)/\partial\nu]_{\nu=n} with n∈Nn\in\mathbb{N}. Next, some closed-form expressions for [∂Pν±m(z)/∂ν]ν=n[\partial P_{\nu}^{\pm m}(z)/\partial\nu]_{\nu=n} are obtained. These results are applied to find several representations, both explicit and of the Rodrigues type, for the associated Legendre function of the second kind of integer degree and order, Qn±m(z)Q_{n}^{\pm m}(z); the explicit representations are suitable for use for numerical purposes in various regions of the complex zz-plane. Finally, the derivatives [∂2Pνm(z)/∂ν2]ν=n[\partial^{2}P_{\nu}^{m}(z)/\partial\nu^{2}]_{\nu=n}, [∂Qνm(z)/∂ν]ν=n[\partial Q_{\nu}^{m}(z)/\partial\nu]_{\nu=n} and [∂Qνm(z)/∂ν]ν=−n−1[\partial Q_{\nu}^{m}(z)/\partial\nu]_{\nu=-n-1}, all with m>nm>n, are evaluated in terms of [∂Pν−m(±z)/∂ν]ν=n[\partial P_{\nu}^{-m}(\pm z)/\partial\nu]_{\nu=n}.Comment: LateX, 40 pages, 1 figure, extensive referencin
