    Metamagnetism of antiferromagnetic XXZ quantum spin chains

    The magnetization process of the one-dimensional antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with the Ising-like anisotropic exchange interaction is studied by the exact diagonalization technique. It results in the evidence of the first-order spin flop transition with a finite magnetization jump in the N\'eel ordered phase for S≄1S\geq 1. It implies that the S=1/2 chain is an exceptional case where the metamagnetic transition becomes second-order due to large quantum fluctuations.Comment: 4 pages, Revtex, with 6 eps figure

    String splitting and strong coupling meson decay

    We study the decay of high spin mesons using the gauge/string theory correspondence. The rate of the process is calculated by studying the splitting of a macroscopic string intersecting a D-brane. The result is applied to the decay of mesons in N=4 SYM with a small number of flavors and in a gravity dual of large N QCD. In QCD the decay of high spin mesons is found to be heavily suppressed in the regime of validity of the supergravity description.Comment: 17 pages, 2 figures. V2: References added.     Critical exponent in the magnetization curve of quantum spin chains

    The ground state magnetization curve around the critical magnetic field HcH_c of quantum spin chains with the spin gap is investigated. We propose a size scaling method to estimate the critical exponent ÎŽ\delta defined as mâˆŒâˆŁH−Hc∣1/ÎŽm\sim |H-H_c|^{1/\delta} from finite cluster calculation. The applications of the method to the S=1 antiferromagnetic chain and S=1/2 bond alternating chain lead to a common conclusion ÎŽ=2\delta =2. The same result is derived for both edges of the magnetization plateau of the S=3/2 antiferromagnetic chain with the single ion anisotropy.Comment: 4 pages, Revtex, with 4 eps figure

    The representation of abstract task rules in the human prefrontal cortex

    We have previously reported sustained activation in the ventral prefrontal cortex while participants prepared to perform 1 of 2 tasks as instructed. But there are studies that have reported activation reflecting task rules elsewhere in prefrontal cortex, and this is true in particular when it was left to the participants to decide which rule to obey. The aim of the present experiment was to use functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to find whether there was activation in common, irrespective of the way that the task rules were established. On each trial, we presented a word after a variable delay, and participants had to decide either whether the word was abstract or concrete or whether it had 2 syllables. The participants either decided before the delay which task they would perform or were instructed by written cues. Comparing the self-generated with the instructed trials, there was early task set activation during the delay in the middle frontal gyrus. On the other hand, a conjunction analysis revealed sustained activation in the ventral prefrontal and polar cortex for both conditions. We argue that the ventral prefrontal cortex is specialized for handling conditional rules regardless of how the task rules were established

    Field induced transition of the S=1 antiferromagnetic chain with anisotropy

    The ground state magnetization process of the S=1 antiferromagnetic chain with the easy-axis single-ion anisotropy described by negative DD is investigated. It is numerically found that a phase transition between two different gapless phases occurs at an intermediate magnetic field between the starting and saturation points of the magnetization for −1.49<D<−0.35-1.49<D<-0.35. The transition is similar to the spin flopping, but it is second-order and not accompanied with any significant anomalous behaviors in the magnetization curve.     An investigation of children's peer trust across culture: is the composition of peer trust universal?

    The components of children's trust in same-gender peers (trust beliefs, ascribed trustworthiness, and dyadic reciprocal trust) were examined in samples of 8- to 11-year-olds from the UK, Italy, and Japan. Trust was assessed by children's ratings of the extent to which same-gender classmates kept promises and kept secrets. Social relations analyses confirmed that children from each country showed significant: (a) actor variance demonstrating reliable individual differences in trust beliefs, (b) partner variance demonstrating reliable individual differences in ascribed trustworthiness, and (c ) relationship variance demonstrating unique relationships between interaction partners. Cultural differences in trust beliefs and ascribed trustworthiness also emerged and these differences were attributed to the tendency for children from cultures that value societal goals to share personal information with the peer group

    Analysis of atmospheric neutrino oscillations in three-flavor neutrinos

    We analyze the atmospheric neutrino experiments of Super-Kamiokande (830-920 live days) using the three-flavor neutrino framework with the mass hierarchy m_1 nearly equal m_2 << m_3. We study the sub-GeV, multi- GeV neutrinos and upward through-going and stopping muons zenith angle distributions taking account of the Earth matter effects thoroughly. We obtain the allowed regions of mass and mixing parameters Delm^2_{23}, theta_{13} and theta_{23}. Delm^2_{23} is restricted to 0.002-0.01eV^2 and theta_{13}<13degrees, 35degrees<theta_{23}<55degrees in 90% C.L. For theta_{12}, there is no difference between the large angle solar neutrino solution and small one. From chi^2 fit, the minimum chi^2=55(54DOF) is obtained at Delm^2_{23}=4x10^(-3)eV^2, theta_{13}=10degrees and theta_{23} =45degrees.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures, LaTe

    SUPERMAN, a regulator of floral homeotic genes in Arabidopsis

    We describe a locus, SUPERMAN, mutations in which result in extra stamens developing at the expense of the central carpels in the Arabidopsis thaliana flower. The development of superman flowers, from initial primordium to mature flower, is described by scanning electron microscopy. The development of doubly and triply mutant strains, constructed with superman alleles and previously identified homeotic mutations that cause alterations in floral organ identity, is also described. Essentially additive phenotypes are observed in superman agamous and superman apetala2 double mutants. The epistatic relationships observed between either apetala3 or pistillata and superman alleles suggest that the SUPERMAN gene product could be a regulator of these floral homeotic genes. To test this, the expression patterns of AGAMOUS and APETALA3 were examined in superman flowers. In wild-type flowers, APETALA3 expression is restricted to the second and third whorls where it is required for the specification of petals and stamens. In contrast, in superman flowers, APETALA3 expression expands to include most of the cells that would normally constitute the fourth whorl. This ectopic APETALA3 expression is proposed to be one of the causes of the development of the extra stamens in superman flowers. The spatial pattern of AGAMOUS expression remains unaltered in superman flowers as compared to wild-type flowers. Taken together these data indicate that one of the functions of the wild-type SUPERMAN gene product is to negatively regulate APETALA3 in the fourth whorl of the flower. In addition, superman mutants exhibit a loss of determinacy of the floral meristem, an effect that appears to be mediated by the APETALA3 and PISTILLATA gene products
