Spectral Conditions on the State of a Composite Quantum System Implying its Separability
For any unitarily invariant convex function F on the states of a composite
quantum system which isolates the trace there is a critical constant C such
that F(w)<= C for a state w implies that w is not entangled; and for any
possible D > C there are entangled states v with F(v)=D. Upper- and lower
bounds on C are given. The critical values of some F's for qubit/qubit and
qubit/qutrit bipartite systems are computed. Simple conditions on the spectrum
of a state guaranteeing separability are obtained. It is shown that the thermal
equilbrium states specified by any Hamiltonian of an arbitrary compositum are

Local Hidden Variable Theories for Quantum States
While all bipartite pure entangled states violate some Bell inequality, the
relationship between entanglement and non-locality for mixed quantum states is
not well understood. We introduce a simple and efficient algorithmic approach
for the problem of constructing local hidden variable theories for quantum
states. The method is based on constructing a so-called symmetric
quasi-extension of the quantum state that gives rise to a local hidden variable

Detection of Multiparticle Entanglement: Quantifying the Search for Symmetric Extensions
We provide quantitative bounds on the characterisation of multiparticle
separable states by states that have locally symmetric extensions. The bounds
are derived from two-particle bounds and relate to recent studies on quantum
versions of de Finetti's theorem. We discuss algorithmic applications of our
results, in particular a quasipolynomial-time algorithm to decide whether a
multiparticle quantum state is separable or entangled (for constant number of
particles and constant error in the LOCC or Frobenius norm). Our results
provide a theoretical justification for the use of the Search for Symmetric
Extensions as a practical test for multiparticle entanglement.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figur
Depressive and anxiety symptoms screening in cardiac inpatients : a virtuous italian approach to psychocardiology
Despite the fact that American Heart Association (AHA) recommended a systematic screening for depression in cardiovascular inpatients, poor attention has been given to this issue. Furthermore, no specific guidelines exist for anxiety screening in cardiovascular inpatients. Thus, the aims of this study were to verify the feasibility of a depressive and anxiety symptoms screening protocol in an Italian hospital specializing in cardiovascular diseases and to evaluate both anxiety and depressive symptoms prevalence. A group of 2009 consecutive inpatients completed the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and the 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7). The rates of depressive and anxiety symptoms were almost 9% and 16% respectively. Men were less likely than women to experience both depressive and anxiety symptoms. Patients who were admitted to the heart failure unit reported higher risk of experiencing both symptoms compared to patients in other wards. Similarly, patients admitted to the cardiac surgery unit showed a higher risk of experiencing anxiety symptoms compared to other patients. The proposed screening procedure showed a good feasibility and acceptance. This study highlighted the importance of implementing a short screening procedure in hospitals dealing with cardiovascular inpatients to identify those individuals who require specific attention and interventions
The power of symmetric extensions for entanglement detection
In this paper, we present new progress on the study of the symmetric
extension criterion for separability. First, we show that a perturbation of
order O(1/N) is sufficient and, in general, necessary to destroy the
entanglement of any state admitting an N Bose symmetric extension. On the other
hand, the minimum amount of local noise necessary to induce separability on
states arising from N Bose symmetric extensions with Positive Partial Transpose
(PPT) decreases at least as fast as O(1/N^2). From these results, we derive
upper bounds on the time and space complexity of the weak membership problem of
separability when attacked via algorithms that search for PPT symmetric
extensions. Finally, we show how to estimate the error we incur when we
approximate the set of separable states by the set of (PPT) N -extendable
quantum states in order to compute the maximum average fidelity in pure state
estimation problems, the maximal output purity of quantum channels, and the
geometric measure of entanglement.Comment: see Video Abstract at

Free energy density for mean field perturbation of states of a one-dimensional spin chain
Motivated by recent developments on large deviations in states of the spin
chain, we reconsider the work of Petz, Raggio and Verbeure in 1989 on the
variational expression of free energy density in the presence of a mean field
type perturbation. We extend their results from the product state case to the
Gibbs state case in the setting of translation-invariant interactions of finite
range. In the special case of a locally faithful quantum Markov state, we
clarify the relation between two different kinds of free energy densities (or
