Reference Frames and the Physical Gravito-Electromagnetic Analogy
The similarities between linearized gravity and electromagnetism are known
since the early days of General Relativity. Using an exact approach based on
tidal tensors, we show that such analogy holds only on very special conditions
and depends crucially on the reference frame. This places restrictions on the
validity of the "gravito-electromagnetic" equations commonly found in the

High-resolution DCE-MRI of the pituitary gland using radial k-space acquisition with compressed sensing reconstruction
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The pituitary gland is located outside of the blood-brain barrier. Dynamic T1 weighted contrast enhanced sequence is considered to be the gold standard to evaluate this region. However, it does not allow assessment of intrinsic permeability properties of the gland. Our aim was to demonstrate the utility of radial volumetric interpolated brain examination with the golden-angle radial sparse parallel technique to evaluate permeability characteristics of the individual components (anterior and posterior gland and the median eminence) of the pituitary gland and areas of differential enhancement and to optimize the study acquisition time.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was performed in 52 patients (group 1, 25 patients with normal pituitary glands; and group 2, 27 patients with a known diagnosis of microadenoma). Radial volumetric interpolated brain examination sequences with goldenangle radial sparse parallel technique were evaluated with an ROI-based method to obtain signal-time curves and permeability measures of individual normal structures within the pituitary gland and areas of differential enhancement. Statistical analyses were performed to assess differences in the permeability parameters of these individual regions and optimize the study acquisition time.
RESULTS: Signal-time curves from the posterior pituitary gland and median eminence demonstrated a faster wash-in and time of
maximum enhancement with a lower peak of enhancement compared with the anterior pituitary gland (P .005). Time-optimization
analysis demonstrated that 120 seconds is ideal for dynamic pituitary gland evaluation. In the absence of a clinical history, differences in the signal-time curves allow easy distinction between a simple cyst and a microadenoma.
CONCLUSIONS: This retrospective study confirms the ability of the golden-angle radial sparse parallel technique to evaluate the
permeability characteristics of the pituitary gland and establishes 120 seconds as the ideal acquisition time for dynamic pituitary gland
imaging
Gravitomagnetism and the Speed of Gravity
Experimental discovery of the gravitomagnetic fields generated by
translational and/or rotational currents of matter is one of primary goals of
modern gravitational physics. The rotational (intrinsic) gravitomagnetic field
of the Earth is currently measured by the Gravity Probe B. The present paper
makes use of a parametrized post-Newtonian (PN) expansion of the Einstein
equations to demonstrate how the extrinsic gravitomagnetic field generated by
the translational current of matter can be measured by observing the
relativistic time delay caused by a moving gravitational lens. We prove that
measuring the extrinsic gravitomagnetic field is equivalent to testing
relativistic effect of the aberration of gravity caused by the Lorentz
transformation of the gravitational field. We unfold that the recent Jovian
deflection experiment is a null-type experiment testing the Lorentz invariance
of the gravitational field (aberration of gravity), thus, confirming existence
of the extrinsic gravitomagnetic field associated with orbital motion of
Jupiter with accuracy 20%. We comment on erroneous interpretations of the
Jovian deflection experiment given by a number of researchers who are not
familiar with modern VLBI technique and subtleties of JPL ephemeris. We propose
to measure the aberration of gravity effect more accurately by observing
gravitational deflection of light by the Sun and processing VLBI observations
in the geocentric frame with respect to which the Sun is moving with velocity

Renal health after long-term exposure to tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) in HIV/HBV positive adults in Ghana
Objectives: The study assessed markers of renal health in HIV/HBV co-infected patients receiving TDF- containing antiretroviral therapy in Ghana.
Methods: Urinary protein-to-creatinine ratio (uPCR) and albumin-to-protein ratio (uAPR) were measured cross-sectionally after a median of four years of TDF. At this time, alongside extensive laboratory testing, patients underwent evaluation of liver stiffness and blood pressure. The estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was measured longitudinally before and during TDF therapy.
Results: Among 101 participants (66% women, median age 44 years, median CD4 count 572 cells/mm 3 ) 21% and 17% had detectable HIV-1 RNA and HBV DNA, respectively. Overall 35% showed hypertension, 6% diabetes, 7% liver stiffness indicative of cirrhosis, and 18% urinary excretion of Schistosoma antigen. Tubular proteinuria occurred in 16% of patients and was independently predicted by female gender and hypertension. The eGFR declined by median 1.8 ml/min/year during TDF exposure (IQR −4.4, −0.0); more pronounced declines ( ≥5 ml/min/year) occurred in 22% of patients and were associated with receiv-ing ritonavir-boosted lopinavir rather than efavirenz. HBV DNA, HBeAg, transaminases, and liver stiffness were not predictive of renal function abnormalities.
Conclusions: The findings mandate improved diagnosis and management of hypertension and suggest targeted laboratory monitoring of patients receiving TDF alongside a booster in sub-Saharan Africa
On a stationary spinning string spacetime
The properties of a stationary massless string endowed with intrinsic spin
are discussed. The spacetime is Minkowskian geometrically but the topology is
nontrivial due to the horizon located on the surface , similar with
Rindler's case. For less than the Planck length , has the
same sign as and closed timelike curves are possible.
We assume an elementary particles' spin originates in the frame dragging
effect produced by the rotation of the source. The Sagnac time delay is

Caracterização de linhagens comerciais de café através de marcadores moleculares.
Estudos sobre a diversidade genética de espécies com finalidade de melhoramento genético representam importante preocupação dos melhoristas. Diversas técnicas moleculares têm permitido revelar uma diversidade genética presente no genoma que até então era desconhecida pelos cientistas. Muitas espécies de interesse agronômico têm sido alvo de estudos que abordam a diversidade genética em nÃvel molecular. De uma maneira geral, os resultados obtidos a partir do uso dos marcadores têm sido bastante satisfatórios, principalmente para aquelas espécies que apresentam ampla base genética e insuficiente número de descritores botânicos para diferenciação de genótipos, como é o caso da mandioca. A base genética formada pelos cultivares de C. arabica, principal espécie cultivada, é considerada estreita. Em relação ao Brasil, principal produtor mundial desta cultura, a própria história explica em parte a ausência de variação genética nos materiais atualmente em cultivo. Historicamente, as primeiras plantações de café formaram-se há mais de dois séculos a partir de poucas plantas, constituindo material muito uniforme e de pouca variabilidade genética. De fato, estudos sobre a diversidade genética de cafeeiros em cultivo realizados no IAC utilizando descritores botânicos e agronômicos têm revelado baixo nÃvel de variação genética entre as diferentes linhagens que compõem um cultivar. Entre diferentes cultivares esta variação é mais notória, mão não tão acentuada como se pensava, mesmo quando diferentes espécies participam da genealogia destes cultivares. Desta maneira, este trabalho teve como objetivo principal a avaliação das técnicas de RAPD e AFLP para a identificação e caracterização de diversas linhagens comerciais de C. arabica selecionadas pelo IAC. Os resultados obtidos com estes marcadores confirmam os dados obtidos anteriormente de que a variabilidade genética entre as linhagens é pequena. Além disso, os dados sugerem que a técnica de RAPD não é eficiente para a identificação e determinação da distância genética entre as linhagens avaliadas, apesar de representar uma ferramenta adequada para avaliação da variabilidade no cafeeiro. No entanto, embora o nÃvel de variação observado através dos marcadores moleculares seja baixo, sabe-se que estas linhagens apresentam comportamento agronômico bastante diferenciado. Isso nos leva a pensar que poucos genes diferenciam os principais materiais genéticos de cafeeiro de importância agronômica e que o uso de marcadores moleculares para estudos de diversidade genética e localização de genes de interesse agronômico deve ser repensada
hTERT Transduction Extends the Lifespan of Primary Pediatric Low-Grade Glioma Cells While Preserving the Biological Response to NGF
The neurotrophin nerve growth factor (NGF) modulates the growth of human gliomas and is able to induce cell differentiation through the engagement of tropomyosin receptor kinase A (TrkA) receptor, although the role played in controlling glioma survival has proved controversial. Unfortunately, the slow growth rate of low-grade gliomas (LGG) has made it difficult to investigate NGF effects on these tumors in preclinical models. In fact, patient-derived low-grade human astrocytoma cells duplicate only a limited number of times in culture before undergoing senescence. Nevertheless, replicative senescence can be counteracted by overexpression of hTERT, the catalytic subunit of telomerase, which potentially increases the proliferative potential of human cells without inducing cancer-associated changes. We have extended, by hTERT transduction, the proliferative in vitro potential of a human LGG cell line derived from a pediatric pilocytic astrocytoma (PA) surgical sample. Remarkably, the hTERT-transduced LGG cells showed a behavior similar to that of the parental line in terms of biological responses to NGF treatment, including molecular events associated with induction of NGF-related differentiation. Therefore, transduction of LGG cells with hTERT can provide a valid approach to increase the in vitro life-span of patient-derived astrocytoma primary cultures, characterized by a finite proliferative potential
Gravito-electromagnetic analogies
We reexamine and further develop different gravito-electromagnetic (GEM)
analogies found in the literature, and clarify the connection between them.
Special emphasis is placed in two exact physical analogies: the analogy based
on inertial fields from the so-called "1+3 formalism", and the analogy based on
tidal tensors. Both are reformulated, extended and generalized. We write in
both formalisms the Maxwell and the full exact Einstein field equations with
sources, plus the algebraic Bianchi identities, which are cast as the
source-free equations for the gravitational field. New results within each
approach are unveiled. The well known analogy between linearized gravity and
electromagnetism in Lorentz frames is obtained as a limiting case of the exact
ones. The formal analogies between the Maxwell and Weyl tensors are also
discussed, and, together with insight from the other approaches, used to
physically interpret gravitational radiation. The precise conditions under
which a similarity between gravity and electromagnetism occurs are discussed,

Spacetime dynamics of spinning particles - exact electromagnetic analogies
We compare the rigorous equations describing the motion of spinning test
particles in gravitational and electromagnetic fields, and show that if the
Mathisson-Pirani spin condition holds then exact gravito-electromagnetic
analogies emerge. These analogies provide a familiar formalism to treat
gravitational problems, as well as a means for comparing the two interactions.
Fundamental differences are manifest in the symmetries and time projections of
the electromagnetic and gravitational tidal tensors. The physical consequences
of the symmetries of the tidal tensors are explored comparing the following
analogous setups: magnetic dipoles in the field of non-spinning/spinning
charges, and gyroscopes in the Schwarzschild, Kerr, and Kerr-de Sitter
spacetimes. The implications of the time projections of the tidal tensors are
illustrated by the work done on the particle in various frames; in particular,
a reciprocity is found to exist: in a frame comoving with the particle, the
electromagnetic (but not the gravitational) field does work on it, causing a
variation of its proper mass; conversely, for "static observers," a stationary
gravitomagnetic (but not a magnetic) field does work on the particle, and the
associated potential energy is seen to embody the Hawking-Wald spin-spin
interaction energy. The issue of hidden momentum, and its counterintuitive
dynamical implications, is also analyzed. Finally, a number of issues regarding
the electromagnetic interaction and the physical meaning of Dixon's equations
