Breakdown of the interlayer coherence in twisted bilayer graphene
Coherent motion of the electrons in the Bloch states is one of the
fundamental concepts of the charge conduction in solid state physics. In
layered materials, however, such a condition often breaks down for the
interlayer conduction, when the interlayer coupling is significantly reduced by
e.g. large interlayer separation. We report that complete suppression of
coherent conduction is realized even in an atomic length scale of layer
separation in twisted bilayer graphene. The interlayer resistivity of twisted
bilayer graphene is much higher than the c-axis resistivity of Bernal-stacked
graphite, and exhibits strong dependence on temperature as well as on external
electric fields. These results suggest that the graphene layers are
significantly decoupled by rotation and incoherent conduction is a main
transport channel between the layers of twisted bilayer graphene.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

iPSC Modeling of Presenilin1 Mutation in Alzheimer's Disease with Cerebellar Ataxia.
Disease modeling of Alzheimer's disease (AD) has been hampered by the lack of suitable cellular models while animal models are mainly based on the overexpression of AD-related genes which often results in an overemphasis of certain pathways and is also confounded by aging. In this study, we therefore developed and used induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) lines from a middle-aged AD patient with a known presenilin 1 (PSEN1) mutation (Glu120Lys; PS1-E120K) and as a control, an elderly normal subject. Using this approach, we demonstrated that the extracellular accumulation of Aβ was dramatically increased in PS1-E120K iPSC-derived neurons compared with the control iPSC line. PS1-E120K iPSC-derived neurons also exhibited high levels of phosphorylated tau, as well as mitochondrial abnormalities and defective autophagy. Given that the effect of aging is lost with iPSC generation, these abnormal cellular features are therefore indicative of PSEN1-associated AD pathogenesis rather than primary changes associated with aging. Super Helium-Rich Population and the Origin of Extreme Horizontal-Branch Stars in Globular Clusters
Recent observations for the color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of the massive
globular cluster Omega Centauri have shown that it has a striking double main
sequence (MS), with a minority population of bluer and fainter MS well
separated from a majority population of MS stars. Here we confirm, with the
most up-to-date Y2 isochrones, that this special feature can only be reproduced
by assuming a large variation (Delta Y = 0.15) of primordial helium abundance
among several distinct populations in this cluster. We further show that the
same helium enhancement required for this special feature on the MS can by
itself reproduce the extreme horizontal-branch (HB) stars observed in Omega
Cen, which are hotter than normal HB stars. Similarly, the complex features on
the HBs of other globular clusters, such as NGC 2808, are explained by large
internal variations of helium abundance. Supporting evidence for the
helium-rich population is also provided by the far-UV (FUV) observations of
extreme HB stars in these clusters, where the enhancement of helium can
naturally explain the observed fainter FUV luminosity for these stars. The
presence of super helium-rich populations in some globular clusters suggests
that the third parameter, other than metallicity and age, also influences CMD

GALEX Ultraviolet Photometry of Globular Clusters in M31
We present ultraviolet photometry for globular clusters (GCs) in M31 from 15
square deg of imaging using the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX). We detect
200 and 94 GCs with certainty in the near-ultraviolet (NUV; 1750 - 2750
Angstroms) and far-ultraviolet (FUV; 1350 - 1750 Angstroms) bandpasses,
respectively. Our rate of detection is about 50% in the NUV and 23% in the FUV,
to an approximate limiting V magnitude of 19. Out of six clusters with
[Fe/H]>-1 seen in the NUV, none is detected in the FUV bandpass. Furthermore,
we find no candidate metal-rich clusters with significant FUV flux, because of
the contribution of blue horizontal-branch (HB) stars, such as NGC 6388 and NGC
6441, which are metal-rich Galactic GCs with hot HB stars. We show that our
GALEX photometry follows the general color trends established in previous UV
studies of GCs in M31 and the Galaxy. Comparing our data with Galactic GCs in
the UV and with population synthesis models, we suggest that the age range of

Internet Use among Ugandan Adolescents: Implications for HIV Intervention
BACKGROUND: The Internet is fast gaining recognition as a powerful, low-cost method to deliver health intervention and prevention programs to large numbers of young people across diverse geographic regions. The feasibility and accessibility of Internet-based health interventions in resource-limited settings, where cost-effective interventions are most needed, is unknown. To determine the utility of developing technology-based interventions in resource-limited settings, availability and patterns of usage of the Internet first need to be assessed. METHODS AND FINDINGS: The Uganda Media and You Survey was a cross-sectional survey of Internet use among adolescents (ages 12–18 years) in Mbarara, Uganda, a municipality mainly serving a rural population in sub-Saharan Africa. Participants were randomly selected among eligible students attending one of five participating secondary day and boarding schools in Mbarara, Uganda. Of a total of 538 students selected, 93% (500) participated. Of the total respondents, 45% (223) reported ever having used the Internet, 78% (175) of whom reported going online in the previous week. As maternal education increased, so too did the odds of adolescent Internet use. Almost two in five respondents (38% [189]) reported already having used a computer or the Internet to search for health information. Over one-third (35% [173]) had used the computer or Internet to find information about HIV/AIDS, and 20% (102) had looked for sexual health information. Among Internet users, searching for HIV/AIDS information on a computer or online was significantly related to using the Internet weekly, emailing, visiting chat rooms, and playing online games. In contrast, going online at school was inversely related to looking for HIV/AIDS information via technology. If Internet access were free, 66% (330) reported that they would search for information about HIV/AIDS prevention online. CONCLUSIONS: Both the desire to use, and the actual use of, the Internet to seek sexual health and HIV/AIDS information is high among secondary school students in Mbarara. The Internet may be a promising strategy to deliver low-cost HIV/AIDS risk reduction interventions in resource-limited settings with expanding Internet access
The Look-back Time Evolution of Far-Ultraviolet Flux from the Brightest Cluster Elliptical Galaxies at z < 0.2
We present the GALEX UV photometry of the elliptical galaxies in Abell
clusters at moderate redshifts (z < 0.2) for the study of the look-back time
evolution of the UV upturn phenomenon. The brightest elliptical galaxies (M_r <
-22) in 12 remote clusters are compared with the nearby giant elliptical
galaxies of comparable optical luminosity in the Fornax and Virgo clusters. The
sample galaxies presented here appear to be quiescent without signs of massive
star formation or strong nuclear activity, and show smooth, extended profiles
in their UV images indicating that the far-UV (FUV) light is mostly produced by
hot stars in the underlying old stellar population. Compared to their
counterparts in nearby clusters, the FUV flux of cluster giant elliptical
galaxies at moderate redshifts fades rapidly with ~ 2 Gyrs of look-back time,
and the observed pace in FUV - V color evolution agrees reasonably well with
the prediction from the population synthesis models where the dominant FUV
source is hot horizontal-branch stars and their progeny. A similar amount of
color spread (~ 1 mag) in FUV - V exists among the brightest cluster elliptical
galaxies at z ~ 0.1, as observed among the nearby giant elliptical galaxies of

Characterizing genomic alterations in cancer by complementary functional associations.
Systematic efforts to sequence the cancer genome have identified large numbers of mutations and copy number alterations in human cancers. However, elucidating the functional consequences of these variants, and their interactions to drive or maintain oncogenic states, remains a challenge in cancer research. We developed REVEALER, a computational method that identifies combinations of mutually exclusive genomic alterations correlated with functional phenotypes, such as the activation or gene dependency of oncogenic pathways or sensitivity to a drug treatment. We used REVEALER to uncover complementary genomic alterations associated with the transcriptional activation of β-catenin and NRF2, MEK-inhibitor sensitivity, and KRAS dependency. REVEALER successfully identified both known and new associations, demonstrating the power of combining functional profiles with extensive characterization of genomic alterations in cancer genomes
Iron chelation therapy in the myelodysplastic syndromes and aplastic anemia: a review of experience in South Korea
Emerging clinical data indicate that transfusion-dependent patients with bone marrow-failure syndromes (BMFS) are at risk of the consequences of iron overload, including progressive damage to hepatic, endocrine, and cardiac organs. Despite the availability of deferoxamine (DFO) in Korea since 1998, data from patients with myelodysplastic syndromes, aplastic anemia, and other BMFS show significant iron overload and damage to the heart and liver. The recent introduction of deferasirox, a once-daily, oral iron chelator, may improve the availability of iron chelation therapy to iron-overloaded patients, and improve compliance in patients who may otherwise find adherence to the DFO regimen difficult
Species Distribution and Susceptibility to Azole Antifungals of Candida Bloodstream Isolates from Eight University Hospitals in Korea
PURPOSE:
The incidence of Candida bloodstream infections (BSI) has increased over the past two decades. The rank order of occurrence and the susceptibility to antifungals of the various Candida species causing BSI are important factors driving the establishment of empirical treatment protocols; however, very limited multi-institutional data are available on Candida bloodstream isolates in Korea.
MATERIALS AND METHODS:
We investigated the susceptibility to azole antifungals and species distribution of 143 Candida bloodstream isolates recovered from eight university hospitals over a six-month period. Minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of fluconazole, itraconazole, and voriconazole for each isolate were determined by the broth microdilution method of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI).
RESULTS:
The Candida species recovered most frequently from the blood cultures was C. albicans (49%), followed by C. parapsilosis (22%), C. tropicalis (14%), and C. glabrata (11%). The MIC ranges for the Candida isolates were 0.125 to 64 microg/mL for fluconazole, 0.03 to 2 microg/mL for itraconazole, and 0.03 to 1 microg/mL for voriconazole. Overall, resistance to fluconazole was found in only 2% of the Candida isolates (3/143), while the dose-dependent susceptibility was found in 6% (8/143). The resistance and dose-dependent susceptibility of itraconazole were found in 4% (6/143) and 14% (20/143) of the isolates, respectively. All bloodstream isolates were susceptible to voriconazole (MIC, < or = 1 microg/mL).
CONCLUSION:
Our findings show that C. albicans is the most common cause of Candida-related BSI, followed by C. parapsilosis, and that the rates of resistance to azole antifungals are still low among bloodstream isolates in Korea.ope
