We get existence and multiplicity of solutions under a topological assumption on the surface and some generic conditions on the parameters.     MADX -- A simple technique for source detection and measurement using multi-band imaging from the Herschel-ATLAS survey

    We describe the method used to detect sources for the Herschel-ATLAS survey. The method is to filter the individual bands using a matched filter, based on the point-spread function (PSF) and confusion noise, and then form the inverse variance weighted sum of the individual bands, including weights determined by a chosen spectral energy distribution. Peaks in this combined image are used to estimate the source positions. The fluxes for each source are estimated from the filtered single-band images, interpolated to the exact sub-pixel position. We test the method by creating simulated maps in three bands with PSFs, pixel sizes and Gaussian instrumental noise that match the 250, 350 and 500 micron bands of Herschel-ATLAS. We use our method to detect sources and compare the measured positions and fluxes to the input sources. The multi-band approach allows reliable source detection a factor 1.2 to 3 lower in flux compared to single-band source detection, depending on the source colours. The false detection rate is reduced by a factor between 4 and 10, and the variance of the source position errors is reduced by about a factor 1.5. We also consider the effect of confusion noise and find that the appropriate matched filter gives a further improvement in completeness and noise over the standard PSF filter approach. Overall the two modifications give a factor of 1.5 to 3 improvement in the depth of the recovered catalogues compared to a single-band PSF filter approach.Comment: 10 pages, 11 figure

    The SCUBA Local Universe Galaxy Survey I: First Measurements of the Submillimetre Luminosity and Dust Mass Functions

    We have used SCUBA to observe a complete sample of 104 galaxies selected at 60 microns from the IRAS BGS and we present here the 850 micron measurements. Fitting the 60,100 and 850 micron fluxes with a single temperature dust model gives the sample mean temperature T=36 K and beta = 1.3. We do not rule out the possibility of dust which is colder than this, if a 20 K component was present then our dust masses would increase by factor 1.5-3. We present the first measurements of the luminosity and dust mass functions, which were well fitted by Schechter functions (unlike those 60 microns). We have correlated many global galaxy properties with the submillimetre and find that there is a tendancy for less optically luminous galaxies to contain warmer dust and have greater star formation efficiencies (cf. Young 1999). The average gas-to-dust ratio for the sample is 581 +/- 43 (using both atomic and molecular hydrogen), significantly higher than the Galactic value of 160. We believe this discrepancy is due to a cold dust component at T < 20 K. There is a suprisingly tight correlation between dust mass and the mass of molecular hydrogen as estimated from CO measurements, with an intrinsic scatter of ~50%.Comment: 24 pages, 15 figures, 8 tables, accepted for publication in MNRA

    The Landau problem and noncommutative quantum mechanics

    The conditions under which noncommutative quantum mechanics and the Landau problem are equivalent theories is explored. If the potential in noncommutative quantum mechanics is chosen as V=ΩV= \Omega \aleph with \aleph defined in the text, then for the value θ~=0.22×1011cm2{\tilde \theta} = 0.22 \times 10^{-11} cm^2 (that measures the noncommutative effects of the space), the Landau problem and noncommutative quantum mechanics are equivalent theories in the lowest Landau level. For other systems one can find differents values for θ~{\tilde \theta} and, therefore, the possible bounds for θ~{\tilde \theta} should be searched in a physical independent scenario.     Gravitational non-commutativity and G\"odel-like spacetimes

    We derive general conditions under which geodesics of stationary spacetimes resemble trajectories of charged particles in an electromagnetic field. For large curvatures (analogous to strong magnetic fields), the quantum mechanicical states of these particles are confined to gravitational analogs of {\it lowest Landau levels}. Furthermore, there is an effective non-commutativity between their spatial coordinates. We point out that the Som-Raychaudhuri and G\"odel spacetime and its generalisations are precisely of the above type and compute the effective non-commutativities that they induce. We show that the non-commutativity for G\"odel spacetime is identical to that on the fuzzy sphere.     A Gauge-Gravity Relation in the One-loop Effective Action

    We identify an unusual new gauge-gravity relation: the one-loop effective action for a massive spinor in 2n dimensional AdS space is expressed in terms of precisely the same function [a certain multiple gamma function] as the one-loop effective action for a massive charged scalar in 4n dimensions in a maximally symmetric background electromagnetic field [one for which the eigenvalues of F_{\mu\nu} are maximally degenerate, corresponding in 4 dimensions to a self-dual field, equivalently to a field of definite helicity], subject to the identification F^2 \Lambda, where \Lambda is the gravitational curvature. Since these effective actions generate the low energy limit of all one-loop multi-leg graviton or gauge amplitudes, this implies a nontrivial gauge-gravity relation at the non-perturbative level and at the amplitude level.Comment: 6 page

    The impact of Chinese import penetration on the South African manufacturing sector

    This article uses a Chenery-type decomposition and econometric estimation to evaluate the impact of Chinese trade on production and employment in South African manufacturing from 1992 to 2010. The results suggest that increased import penetration from China caused South African manufacturing output to be 5 per cent lower in 2010 than it otherwise would have been. The estimated reduction of total employment in manufacturing as a result of trade with China is larger – in 2010 about 8 per cent – because the declines in output were concentrated on labour-intensive industries and because the increase in imports raised labour productivity within industries
