<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Bacterial growth and division requires a core set of essential proteins, several of which are still of unknown function. They are also attractive targets for the development of new antibiotics. YsxC is a member of a family of GTPases highly conserved across eubacteria with a possible ribosome associated function.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Here, we demonstrate by the creation of a conditional lethal mutant that <it>ysxC </it>is apparently essential for growth in <it>S. aureus</it>. To begin to elucidate YsxC function, a translational fusion of YsxC to the CBP-ProteinA tag in the staphylococcal chromosome was made, enabling Tandem Affinity Purification (TAP) of YsxC-interacting partners. These included the ribosomal proteins S2, S10 and L17, as well as the β' subunit of the RNA polymerase. YsxC was then shown to copurify with ribosomes as an accessory protein specifically localizing to the 50 S subunit. YsxC depletion led to a decrease in the presence of mature ribosomes, indicating a role in ribosome assembly and/or stability in <it>S. aureus</it>.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>In this study we demonstrate that YsxC of <it>S. aureus </it>localizes to the ribosomes, is crucial for ribosomal stability and is apparently essential for the life of <it>S. aureus</it>.</p

14-3-3s Protein Expression in Canine Renal Cell Carcinomas

14-3-3σ is a protein expressed in many epithelial tissues associated with essential cell functions, including cell-cycle control, apoptosis, and cytoskeletal integrity. There is a paucity of knowledge of the tumorigenesis of canine renal cell carcinomas (RCCs), and the histological origin of this tumor has not been established. This study analyzed the expression of 14-3-3σ, Ki-67, cytokeratins, and vimentin in 40 canine RCCs. Aberrant expression of 14-3-3σ was demonstrated in 15 (38%) cases and was associated with a significantly shorter survival time (P < .002). In contrast to canine RCC, normal kidney did not express 14-3-3σ. The Ki-67 proliferation index did not show utility as a prognostic factor. The distal convoluted tubular epithelium in normal kidneys coexpressed cytokeratins and vimentin, and thus maintenance of this coexpression pattern in canine RCC suggests that most tumors arise from the distal segment of the nephron. These results suggest that 14-3-3σ is a potential negative prognostic factor and a possible therapeutic target

The implementation of the mating disruption technique against the grape berry moth, Lobesia botrana (Denis and Schiffermüller) (Lepidoptera, Tortricidae), in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Sherry vineyards (Andalusia, South-western Spain) reduced the number of chemical treatments required to manage this serious pest. In order to verify the long term consequences of this type of management on the minor pests of vineyards, a study was carried out over nine years to compare the population levels of four phytophagous insect species (Altica ampelophaga, Planococcus citri, Jacobiasca lybica, Aphis gossypii) in plots where L. botrana was managed with conventional chemical treatments or using mating disruption. Field data on secondary pests were collected on randomly chosen vines at different times on different plant organs such as leaves, shoots and bunches, depending on the type of pest, according to the ATRIA procedure (Andalusian IPM procedure). Results showed a significant increase of grapevine infestation by all four secondary pest species in the plots managed with grape berry moth mating disruption. These findings represented a limitation for the implementation of this technique in Andalusian vineyardsWe want to thank J. L. Full text link
The present study examined in Mexican male football players (N = 49) the relationship between types of somatotype and types of physical capacities according to digital dermatoglyphics. The frequencies of types of somatotype and of physical capacities were compared between football players subgroups. A higher proportion of football players was characterised by a balanced mesomorph somatotype with dermatoglyphic type 2 and 3 corresponding to strength, explosive strength and velocity. This is consistent with previous findings in Chilenean and Brazilian footballers, Therefore extending the available evidence of somatotype and dermatoglyphics in Latin American football player

Herschel Far-IR counterparts of SDSS galaxies: Analysis of commonly used Star Formation Rate estimates

We study a hundred of galaxies from the spectroscopic Sloan Digital Sky Survey with individual detections in the Far-Infrared Herschel PACS bands (100 or 160 μ\mum) and in the GALEX Far-UltraViolet band up to z\sim0.4 in the COSMOS and Lockman Hole fields. The galaxies are divided into 4 spectral and 4 morphological types. For the star forming and unclassifiable galaxies we calculate dust extinctions from the UV slope, the Hα\alpha/Hβ\beta ratio and the LIR/LUVL_{\rm IR}/L_{\rm UV} ratio. There is a tight correlation between the dust extinction and both LIRL_{\rm IR} and metallicity. We calculate SFRtotal_{total} and compare it with other SFR estimates (Hα\alpha, UV, SDSS) finding a very good agreement between them with smaller dispersions than typical SFR uncertainties. We study the effect of mass and metallicity, finding that it is only significant at high masses for SFRHα_{H\alpha}. For the AGN and composite galaxies we find a tight correlation between SFR and LIR_{IR} (σ\sigma\sim0.29), while the dispersion in the SFR - LUV_{UV} relation is larger (σ\sigma\sim0.57). The galaxies follow the prescriptions of the Fundamental Plane in the M-Z-SFR space.Comment: 24 pages, 23 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

Flatband slows down polariton dynamics in strongly coupled cavities

Flatbands in condensed-matter, atomic physics, and quantum optics stand as the basis for several strongly correlated quantum many-body phenomena such as Wigner crystallization, the fractional quantum Hall effect and Moir\'e-related physics. Besides inspiring analogies among diverse physical fields, flatbands are highly sought-after in photonics because they allow unconventional light flows such as slow-light. Here, we realize room-temperature slow-light with Frenkel polaritons excited across two strongly coupled cavities. We demonstrate the formation of a tuneable flatband appearing in absence of a periodic in-plane potential. Our simple photonic architecture enables the unique spatial segregation of photons and excitons in different cavities and maintains a balanced degree of mixing between them. This unveils a dynamical competition between many-body scattering processes and the underlying polariton nature which leads to an increased fluorescence lifetime. The polariton features are further revealed under appropriate resonant pumping, where we observe suppression of the flatband polariton fluorescence intensity.Comment: 8+ 4 page

Estimación de la carga global de enfermedad en Colombia 2012: nuevos aspectos metodológicos

    Get PDF
The new methodology applying for burden of disease study (GBD 2010) is difficult tocompletely reproduce in Colombia. This paper presents the results of partial use of this methodology to estimate the components years lost due to premature death (YLLs) and lived with disability (YLDs). Redistribution of useless codes produces significant increases in some causes of death, which are preferable to deal with an analysis of causes of death with 15,6 % of useless codes that would provide little or no statistical information. Ischemic heart disease, cerebrovascular and hypertensive heart disease events cause the highest risk of mortality rate (164,2 per 100,000). Assaults by firearms and sharp objects, self-inflicted injuries and those caused by motorcycles and four-wheeled vehicles on the road, are the first cause of YLLs per 1000 (34,3). Skin diseases such as dermatitis, erythemas, burns on exposure to sunlight, pediculosis and pityriasis, cause the greatest risk of YLDs per 1000 (51,3). This group of skin diseases are also the leading cause of DALYs per 1000 (51,4). The departments with the highest rates of mortality and YLLs for Group I (communicable diseases) are Guainía, Amazonas, Vaupés, Cauca, Vichada, Putumayo, Nariño, Chocó, Cordoba, La Guajira, Guaviare y Caquetá and with the lower mortality coverage
