On the propagation speed of evanescent modes
The group-velocity of evanescent waves (in undersized waveguides, for
instance) was theoretically predicted, and has been experimentally verified, to
be Superluminal (v_g > c). By contrast, it is known that the precursor speed in
vacuum cannot be larger than c. In this paper, by computer simulations based on
Maxwell equations only, we show the existence of both phenomena. In other
words, we verify the actual possibility of Superluminal group velocities,
without violating the so-called (naive) Einstein causality. (Subject classes:

Laser-induced effects on the electronic features of graphene nanoribbons
We study the interplay between lateral confinement and photon-induced
processes on the electronic properties of illuminated graphene nanoribbons. We
find that by tuning the device setup (edges geometries, ribbon width and
polarization direction), a laser with frequency {\Omega} may either not affect
the electronic structure, or induce bandgaps or depletions at \hbar {\Omega}/2,
and/or at other energies not commensurate with half the photon energy. Similar
features are also observed in the dc conductance, suggesting the use of the
polarization direction to switch on and off the graphene device. Our results
could guide the design of novel types of optoelectronic nano-devices.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Improved quantum algorithms for the ordered search problem via semidefinite programming
One of the most basic computational problems is the task of finding a desired
item in an ordered list of N items. While the best classical algorithm for this
problem uses log_2 N queries to the list, a quantum computer can solve the
problem using a constant factor fewer queries. However, the precise value of
this constant is unknown. By characterizing a class of quantum query algorithms
for ordered search in terms of a semidefinite program, we find new quantum
algorithms for small instances of the ordered search problem. Extending these
algorithms to arbitrarily large instances using recursion, we show that there
is an exact quantum ordered search algorithm using 4 log_{605} N \approx 0.433
log_2 N queries, which improves upon the previously best known exact algorithm.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure
Non-perturbative laser effects on the electrical properties of graphene nanoribbons
The use of Floquet theory combined with a realistic description of the
electronic structure of illuminated graphene and graphene nanoribbons is
developed to assess the emergence of non-adiabatic and non-perturbative effects
on the electronic properties. Here, we introduce an efficient computational
scheme and illustrate its use by applying it to graphene nanoribbons in the
presence of both linear and circular polarization. The interplay between
confinement due to the finite sample size and laser-induced transitions is
shown to lead to sharp features on the average conductance and density of
states. Particular emphasis is given to the emergence of the bulk limit
response.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, to appear in J. Phys.: Condens. Matter, special

Densities and phase equilibria of hydrogen, propane and vegetable oil mixtures. Experimental data and thermodynamic modeling
Heterogeneous catalytic gas-liquid reactions are intensified when carried out in the homogenous fluid phase by means of a supercritical co-solvent. For instance, supercritical propane is used to enhance yield in the hydrogenation of vegetable oils. Besides phase equilibrium knowledge, volumetric information is also needed to elucidate kinetic mechanisms and design continuous supercritical reactors. In this work, we report new experimental PvT data of the reactive mixture H2+sunflower oil+propane using the isochoric method. In addition, the phase equilibria and PvT data are modeled with the GCA and RK-PR equations of state, respectively. The isochoric method not only provides PvT information under the reaction conditions, but also the reactive system compressibility, key variable to attain enhanced transport properties in the supercritical reactors.Fil: Hegel, Pablo Ezequiel. Star Formation in a Stellar Mass Selected Sample of Galaxies to z=3 from the GOODS NICMOS Survey (GNS)
We present a study of the star-forming properties of a stellar mass-selected
sample of galaxies in the GOODS NICMOS Survey (GNS), based on deep Hubble Space
Telescope imaging of the GOODS North and South fields. Using a stellar mass
selected sample, combined with HST/ACS and Spitzer data to measure both UV and
infrared derived star formation rates (SFR), we investigate the star forming
properties of a complete sample of ~1300 galaxies down to log M*=9.5 at
redshifts 1.5<z<3. Eight percent of the sample is made up of massive galaxies
with M*>10^11 Msun. We derive optical colours, dust extinctions, and
ultraviolet and infrared SFR to determine how the star formation rate changes
as a function of both stellar mass and time. Our results show that SFR
increases at higher stellar mass such that massive galaxies nearly double their
stellar mass from star formation alone over the redshift range studied, but the
average value of SFR for a given stellar mass remains constant over this 2 Gyr
period. Furthermore, we find no strong evolution in the SFR for our sample as a
function of mass over our redshift range of interest, in particular we do not
find a decline in the SFR among massive galaxies, as is seen at z < 1. The most
massive galaxies in our sample (log M*>11) have high average SFRs with values,
SFR(UV,corr) = 103+/-75 Msun/yr, yet exhibit red rest-frame (U-B) colours at
all redshifts. We conclude that the majority of these red high-redshift massive
galaxies are red due to dust extinction. We find that A(2800) increases with
stellar mass, and show that between 45% and 85% of massive galaxies harbour
dusty star formation. These results show that even just a few Gyr after the
first galaxies appear, there are strong relations between the global physical
properties of galaxies, driven by stellar mass or another underlying feature of
galaxies strongly related to the stellar mass.Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
Combined Earth and Rock Bearing Foundation - Hospital Humana Mexico City D.F.
This text describes the design and performance of a shallow spread footing foundation system for a large medical care facility in Mexico City. The project is unusual because the spread footings bear on a combination of basaltic lava and coarse sand fill containing angular lava fragments, the latter of which was densified using the dynamic deep compaction process. In the following narrative, the exploratory program is described, the geotechnical design and construction process is explained, and the inspection procedure for footings bearing on rock and soil is discussed. Further, the results of precise settlement monitoring for the structure are presented
On Brane Inflation Potentials and Black Hole Attractors
We propose a new potential in brane inflation theory, which is given by the
arctangent of the square of the scalar field. Then we perform an explicit
computation for inflationary quantities. This potential has many nice features.
In the small field approximation, it reproduces the chaotic and MSSM
potentials. It allows one, in the large field approximation, to implement the
attractor mechanism for bulk black holes where the geometry on the brane is de
Sitter. In particular, we show, up to some assumptions, that the Friedman
equation can be reinterpreted as a Schwarzschild black hole attractor equation
for its mass parameter.Comment: 12 pages. Reference updated and minor changes added. Version to
