    Model-based engineering of widgets, user applications and servers compliant with ARINC 661 specification

    International audienceThe purpose of ARINC 661 specification [1] is to define interfaces to a Cockpit Display System (CDS) used in any types of aircraft installations. ARINC 661 provides precise information for communication protocol between application (called User Applications) and user interface components (called widgets) as well as precise information about the widgets themselves. However, in ARINC 661, no information is given about the behaviour of these widgets and about the behaviour of an application made up of a set of such widgets. This paper presents the results of the application of a formal description technique to the various elements of ARINC 661 specification within an industrial project. This formal description technique called Interactive Cooperative Objects defines in a precise and non-ambiguous way all the elements of ARINC 661 specification. The application of the formal description techniques is shown on an interactive application called MPIA (Multi Purpose Interactive Application). Within this application, we present how ICO are used for describing interactive widgets, User Applications and User Interface servers (in charge of interaction techniques). The emphasis is put on the model-based management of the feel of the applications allowing rapid prototyping of the external presentation and the interaction techniques. Lastly, we present the CASE (Computer Aided Software Engineering) tool supporting the formal description technique and its new extensions in order to deal with large scale applications as the ones targeted at by ARINC 661 specification

    Perception of Nuclear Energy and Coal in France and the Netherlands

    This study focuses on the perception of large scale application of nuclear energy and coal in the Netherlands and France. The application of these energy-sources and the risks and benefits are judged differently by various group in society. In Europe, France has the highest density of nuclear power plants and the Netherlands has one of the lowest. In both countries scientists and social scientists completed a questionnaire assessing the perception of the large scale application of both energy sources. Furthermore, a number of variables relating to the socio cultural and political circumstances were measured. The results indicate that the French had a higher risk perception and a more negative attitude toward nuclear power than the Dutch. But they also assess the benefits of the use of nuclear power to be higher. Explanations for these differences are discussed

    Superconductivity with hard-core repulsion: BCS-Bose crossover and s-/d-wave competition

    We consider fermions on a 2D lattice interacting repulsively on the same site and attractively on the nearest neighbor sites. The model is relevant, for instance, to study the competition between antiferromagnetism and superconductivity in a Kondo lattice. We first solve the two-body problem to show that in the dilute and strong coupling limit the s-wave Bose condensed state is always the ground state. We then consider the many-body problem and treat it at mean-field level by solving exactly the usual gap equation. This guarantees that the superconducting wave-function correctly vanishes when the two fermions (with antiparallel spin) sit on the same site. This fact has important consequences on the superconducting state that are somewhat unusual. In particular this implies a radial node-line for the gap function. When a next neighbor hopping t' is present we find that the s-wave state may develop nodes on the Fermi surface.Comment: 10 pages, 9 fig

    An automatic critical care urine meter

    Nowadays patients admitted to critical care units have most of their physiological parameters measured automatically by sophisticated commercial monitoring devices. More often than not, these devices supervise whether the values of the parameters they measure lie within a pre-established range, and issue warning of deviations from this range by triggering alarms. The automation of measuring and supervising tasks not only discharges the healthcare staff of a considerable workload but also avoids human errors in these repetitive and monotonous tasks. Arguably, the most relevant physiological parameter that is still measured and supervised manually by critical care unit staff is urine output (UO). In this paper we present a patent-pending device that provides continuous and accurate measurements of patient’s UO. The device uses capacitive sensors to take continuous measurements of the height of the column of liquid accumulated in two chambers that make up a plastic container. The first chamber, where the urine inputs, has a small volume. Once it has been filled it overflows into a second bigger chamber. The first chamber provides accurate UO measures of patients whose UO has to be closely supervised, while the second one avoids the need for frequent interventions by the nursing staff to empty the containe

    Soft and non-soft structural transitions in disordered nematic networks

    Properties of disordered nematic elastomers and gels are theoretically investigated with emphasis on the roles of non-local elastic interactions and crosslinking conditions. Networks originally crosslinked in the isotropic phase lose their long-range orientational order by the action of quenched random stresses, which we incorporate into the affine-deformation model of nematic rubber elasticity. We present a detailed picture of mechanical quasi-Goldstone modes, which accounts for an almost completely soft polydomain-monodomain (P-M) transition under strain as well as a ``four-leaf clover'' pattern in depolarized light scattering intensity. Dynamical relaxation of the domain structure is studied using a simple model. The peak wavenumber of the structure factor obeys a power-law-type slow kinetics and goes to zero in true mechanical equilibrium. The effect of quenched disorder on director fluctuation in the monodomain state is analyzed. The random frozen contribution to the fluctuation amplitude dominates the thermal one, at long wavelengths and near the P-M transition threshold. We also study networks obtained by crosslinking polydomain nematic polymer melts. The memory of initial director configuration acts as correlated and strong quenched disorder, which renders the P-M transition non-soft. The spatial distribution of the elastic free energy is strongly dehomogenized by external strain, in contrast to the case of isotropically crosslinked networks.Comment: 19 pages, 15 EPS figure

    Asthma in 9-year-old children of subfertile couples is not associated with in vitro fertilization procedures

    Asthma is a chronic reversible obstructive airway disease, which is common among children and leads to respiratory impairment. Studies showed that asthma is more common among children born after in vitro fertilization (IVF) than among spontaneously conceived children. However, it is unknown which component of the IVF procedure contributes to this putative link. Therefore, the aim of this prospective follow-up study was to differentiate the possible effect of ovarian hyperstimulation from that of the in vitro culture procedure on asthma and rhinitis in 9-year-old children conceived with IVF. The study comprised three groups of singletons: (I) conceived with ovarian hyperstimulation-IVF (COH-IVF, n = 95); (II) conceived with modified natural cycle-IVF (MNC-IVF, n = 48); and (III) naturally conceived to subfertile couples (Sub-NC, n = 68). Parents filled out the validated Dutch version of the asthma questionnaire of the International Study of Asthma and Allergies. Asthma prevalence in the groups did not differ: COH-IVF n = 8 (8%); MNC-IVF n = 0 (0%); and Sub-NC n = 4 (6%). Adjustment for confounders did not alter the results.Conclusion: Neither ovarian hyperstimulation nor the in vitro culture procedure was associated with asthma and rhinitis at 9 years. IVF children had a similar prevalence of asthma compared with children conceived naturally by subfertile couples.Trial registration: ISRCTN76355836 What is Known: • An increased risk for asthma has been observed in children born after in vitro fertilization at preschool and school age. • The association between IVF and asthma may be partly explained by parental subfertility.     Benefit and Harm of Active Surveillance for Biopsy-proven Renal Oncocytoma : A Systematic Review and Pooled Analysis

    Context: Active surveillance (AS) of biopsy-proven renal oncocytomas may reduce overtreatment. However, on biopsy, the risk of misdiagnosis owing principally to entities with peculiar hybrids and overlap morphology, and phenotypes argues for early intervention. Objective: To assess the benefit and harm of AS in biopsy-proven renal oncocytoma. Evidence acquisition: A systematic review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA). We systematically searched PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases from September 26 up to October 2021, for studies that analyzed the outcomes of AS in patients with biopsy-proven renal oncocytoma. Evidence synthesis: A total of ten studies with 633 patients met our inclusion criteria and were included for analysis. After a median follow-up of 34.5 mo (95% confidence interval [CI] 30.6-38.4), the overall definitive treatment rate from AS to definitive treatment was 17.3% (n = 75/433, six studies). The pooled pathological agreement between the initial renal mass biopsy and the surgical pathology report was 91.1%. The main indications for surgery during follow-up were rapid tumor growth and patient request. The pooled median growth rate was 1.55 mm/yr (95% CI 0.9-2.2). No metastasis or death related to renal oncocytoma was reported. Conclusions: Annual tumor growth of biopsy-proven renal oncocytoma is low. AS is oncologically safe, with favorable compliance of patients. Crossover to definitive treatment revealed a strong concordance between biopsy and final pathology. Further studies on the long-term outcomes of AS are needed. Patient summary: In this study, we examined the benefit and harm of active surveillance (AS) in biopsy-proven oncocytoma. Based on the available data, AS appears oncologically safe and may represent a promising alternative to immediate treatment. Patients should be included in AS decision discussions

    El proyecto genómico del hongo Ophiostoma

    The Canadian Ophiostoma Genome Project, which was initiated in 2001, is a collaborative effort between research teams in four different universities. Its general objective is to conduct a large-scale identification and analysis of genes controlling important aspects of the life cycle of Ophiostomatoid fungi. To this end, several expressed sequence tag (EST) libraries were obtained for the Dutch elm disease pathogen Ophiostoma novo-ulmi and the sapstainer O. piceae, following partial, single-pass automated sequencing of complementary DNA clones. The largest EST library, prepared from yeast like cells of O. novo-ulmi grown at 24 °C, contains over 3,400 readable sequences and serves as a general reference library for Ophiostomatoid fungi. Smaller, specific EST libraries were constructed from mycelia of O. novo-ulmi grown at suboptimal temperatures, from perithecia formed in laboratory crosses, as well as from O. piceae grown on different carbon sources. Ongoing bioinformatic searches in public databases have so far identified over 750 Ophiostoma unique ESTs which show significant homology with other fungal genes of known function, although a high proportion of Ophiostoma ESTs are either orphans (no match to any known gene) or show homology to genes of unknown function. In addition to EST analysis, differential expression of selected genes and structural genomics are also being studied.El programa canadiense sobre el genoma de Ophiostoma, iniciado en 2001, es una colaboraci&oacute;n entre equipos de investigaci&oacute;n de cuatro universidades diferentes.     Systemic Oxidative Stress, Aging and the Risk of Cardiovascular Events in the General Female Population

    Introduction: Menopause is associated with increased cardiovascular risk, in which oxidative stress plays a pivotal role. Systemic oxidative stress is reflected by decreased levels of free thiols (R-SH, sulfhydryl groups), which are key components of the extracellular antioxidant machinery. In this study, we investigated the relation between serum free thiols as marker of oxidative stress and the female cardiovascular phenotype, as well as potential associations with the risk of cardiovascular (CV) events in pre- and postmenopausal women from the general population. Methods: Female participants (n = 2,980) of the Prevention of REnal and Vascular ENd-stage Disease (PREVEND) cohort study were included. Serum free thiol concentrations were analyzed for associations with demographic, clinical, biochemical, and gynecological parameters, as well as with menopausal status and, prospectively, with the risk of CV events. Results: Postmenopausal women had significantly reduced levels of serum free thiols (4.8 +/- 1.0 vs. 5.2 +/- 1.0 mu mol/g, P <0.001) compared to reproductive women. In multivariable analyses, serum free thiols were significantly associated with menopausal status (OR 0.70 [0.49-0.98], P = 0.039), even when adjusted for potential confounding factors, except for age (P = 0.550). Prospectively, serum free thiols were significantly associated with the risk of CV events (HR 0.52 [0.27-0.97], P = 0.040), even with covariate adjustment, although this disappeared when correcting for age. Conclusion: In this study, we revealed serum free thiols to be strongly associated with the female cardiovascular phenotype as well as with female risk of CV events, where the influence of age itself seemed to outweigh that of female menopause. Future studies are warranted to further unravel the clinical utility of serum free thiol levels in the context of female cardiovascular risk management

    Serum free sulfhydryl status associates with new-onset chronic kidney disease in the general population

    BACKGROUND: Serum sulfhydryl groups (R-SH, free thiols) reliably reflect the systemic redox status in health and disease. As oxidation of R-SH occurs rapidly by reactive oxygen species (ROS), oxidative stress is accompanied by reduced levels of free thiols. Oxidative stress has been implicated in the pathophysiology of chronic kidney disease (CKD), in which redox imbalance may precede the onset of CKD. Therefore, we aimed to investigate associations between serum free thiols and the risk of incident CKD as defined by renal function decline and albuminuria in a population-based cohort study. METHODS: Subjects without CKD (n = 4,745) who participated in the Prevention of REnal and Vascular ENd-stage Disease (PREVEND) study, a prospective, population-based cohort study in the Netherlands, were included. Baseline protein-adjusted serum free thiols were studied for their associations with the development of CKD, defined as a composite outcome of an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR)  30 mg/24-h, or both. RESULTS: Median level of protein-adjusted serum free thiols at baseline was 5.14 μmol/g of protein (interquartile range [IQR]: 4.50–5.75 μmol/g) and median eGFR was 96 mL/min/1.73 m(2) [IQR: 85–106]. Protein-adjusted serum free thiols were significantly associated with incident CKD (hazard ratio [HR] per doubling 0.42 [95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.36–0.52, P 30 mg/24-h after full adjustment for confounding factors (HR per doubling 0.70 [95% CI: 0.51–0.96], P=0.028). CONCLUSION: Higher levels of serum R-SH, reflecting less oxidative stress, are associated with a decreased risk of developing CKD in subjects from the general population.
