Polyamide Nanocomposites for Selective Laser Sintering
Current polyamide 11 and 12 are lacking in fire retardancy and high strength/high
heat resistance characteristics for a plethora of finished parts that are desired and required
for performance driven applications. It is anticipated that nanomodification of polyamide
11 and 12 will result in enhanced polymer performance, i.e., fire retardancy, high strength
and high heat resistance for polyamide 11 and 12. It is expected that these findings will
expand the market opportunities for polyamide 11 and 12 resin manufacturers.
The objective of this research is to develop improved polyamide 11 and 12 polymers
with enhanced flame retardancy, thermal, and mechanical properties for selective laser
sintering (SLS) rapid manufacturing (RM). A nanophase was introduced into the
polyamide 11 and 12 via twin screw extrusion to provide improved material properties of
the polymer blends. Arkema RILSAN® polyamide 11 molding polymer pellets and
Degussa VESTAMID® L1670 polyamide 12 were examined with three types of
nanoparticles: chemically modified montmorillonite (MMT) organoclays, surface
modified nanosilica, and carbon nanofibers (CNFs) to create polyamide 11 and 12
nanocomposites.
Wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM)
were used to determine the degree of dispersion. Injection molded test specimens were
fabricated for physical, thermal, mechanical properties, and flammability tests. Thermal
stability of these polyamide 11 and 12 nanocomposites was examined by TGA.
Mechanical properties such as tensile, flexural, and elongation at break were measured.
Flammability properties were also obtained using the Cone Calorimeter at an external
heat flux of 50 kW/m2. TEM micrographs, physical, mechanical, and flammability
properties are included in the paper. Polyamide 11 and 12 nanocomposites properties are
compared with polyamide 11 and 12 baseline polymers. Based on flammability and
mechanical material performance, selective polymers including polyamide 11
nanocomposites and control polyamide 11 were cryogenically ground into fine powders
and fabricated into SLS parts.Mechanical Engineerin
Mid-infrared photodetectors operating over an extended wavelength range up to 90 K
We report a wavelength threshold extension, from the designed value of 3.1 to 8.9 μm, in a -type heterostructure photodetector. This is associated with the use of a graded barrier and barrier offset, and arises from hole–hole interactions in the detector absorber. Experiments show that using long-pass filters to tune the energies of incident photons gives rise to changes in the intensity of the response. This demonstrates an alternative approach to achieving tuning of the photodetector response without the need to adjust the characteristic energy that is determined by the band structure

Designing calibration and expressivity-efficient instruction sets for quantum computing
Near-term quantum computing (QC) systems have limited qubit counts, high gate (instruction) error rates, and typically support a minimal instruction set having one type of two-qubit gate (2Q). To reduce program instruction counts and improve application expressivity, vendors have proposed, and shown proof-of-concept demonstrations of richer instruction sets such as XY gates (Rigetti) and fSim gates (Google). These instruction sets comprise of families of 2Q gate types parameterized by continuous qubit rotation angles. That is, it allows a large set of different physical operations to be realized on the qubits, based on the input angles. However, having such a large number of gate types is problematic because each gate type has to be calibrated periodically, across the full system, to obtain high fidelity implementations. This results in substantial recurring calibration overheads even on current systems which use only a few gate types. Our work aims to navigate this tradeoff between application expressivity and calibration overhead, and identify what instructions vendors should implement to get the best expressivity with acceptable calibration time.Studying this tradeoff is challenging because of the diversity in QC application requirements, the need to optimize applications for widely different hardware gate types and noise variations across gate types. Therefore, our work develops NuOp, a flexible compilation pass based on numerical optimization, to efficiently decompose application operations into arbitrary hardware gate types. Using NuOp and four important quantum applications, we study the instruction set proposals of Rigetti and Google, with realistic noise simulations and a calibration model. Our experiments show that implementing 4-8 types of 2Q gates is sufficient to attain nearly the same expressivity as a full continuous gate family, while reducing the calibration overhead by two orders of magnitude. With several vendors proposing rich gate families as means to higher fidelity, our work has potential to provide valuable instruction set design guidance for near-term QC systems

Innovative Selective Laser Sintering Rapid Manufacturing using Nanotechnology
The objective of this research is to develop an improved nylon 11 (polyamide 11) polymer
with enhanced flame retardancy, thermal, and mechanical properties for selective laser sintering
(SLS) rapid manufacturing (RM). A nanophase was introduced into nylon 11 via twin screw
extrusion to provide improved material properties of the polymer blends. Atofina (now known
as Arkema) RILSAN® nylon 11 injection molding polymer pellets was used with three types of
nanoparticles: chemically modified montmorillonite (MMT) organoclays, nanosilica, and carbon
nanofibers (CNF) to create nylon 11 nanocomposites. Wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD)
and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to determine the degree of dispersion.
Fifteen nylon 11 nanocomposites and control nylon 11 were fabricated by injection molding.
Flammability properties (using a cone calorimeter with a radiant flux of 50 kW/m2
) and
mechanical properties such as tensile strength and modulus, flexural modulus, elongation at
break were determined for the nylon 11 nanocomposites and compared with the baseline nylon
11. Based on flammability and mechanical material performance, five polymers including four
nylon 11 nanocomposites and a control nylon 11 were cryogenically ground into fine powders
for SLS RM. SLS specimens were fabricated for flammability, mechanical, and thermal
properties characterization. Nylon 11-CNF nanocomposites exhibited the best overall properties
for this study.Mechanical Engineerin

Polyamide 11-Carbon Nanotubes Nanocomposites: Preliminary Investigation
The objective of this research is to develop an improved polyamide 11 (PA11) polymer with
enhanced flame retardancy, thermal, and mechanical properties for selective laser sintering
(SLS) rapid manufacturing. In the present study, a nanophase was introduced into polyamide 11
via twin screw extrusion. Arkema Rilsan® polyamide 11 molding polymer pellets were used
with 1, 3, 5, and 7 wt% loadings of Arkema’s GraphistrengthTM multi-wall carbon nanotubes
(MWNTs) to create a family of PA11-MWNT nanocomposites.
Transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy were used to determine
the degree and uniformity of dispersion. Injection molded test specimens were fabricated for
physical, thermal, mechanical properties, and flammability measurements. Thermal stability of
these polyamide 11-MWNT nanocomposites was examined by TGA. Mechanical properties such
as ultimate tensile strength, rupture tensile strength, and elongation at rupture were measured.
Flammability properties were also obtained using the UL 94 test method. All these different
methods and subsequent polymer characteristics are discussed in this paper.Mechanical Engineerin
Inhibition of eukaryotic elongation factor-2 confers to tumor suppression by a herbal formulation Huanglian-Jiedu decoction in human hepatocellular carcinoma
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE:
An oriental medicinal formulation, Huanglian Jiedu Decoction (HLJDD), has been well documented in few Traditional Chinese Medicine Classics 1300 years ago for treatment of heat and dampness-related diseases. Its effect is well accepted in Asian community, including China, Japan and Korea. Recent studies have postulated HLJDD as a regimen for cancer treatment, especially liver cancer, but the underlying mechanism is unknown. The aim of this study was to examine the suppressive effect of HLJDD on the growth of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and its possible underlying mechanism.
METHODS:
Chemical composition of HLJDD was analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography. The tumor suppressive effect of HLJDD was determined on both HCC cells and xenograft model. Nascent protein synthesis was detected with Click-IT protein labeling technology; protein expression was determined by immunoblotting and imunnohistochemical analysis.
RESULTS:
Quality analysis revealed that HLJDD of different batches is consistent in both chemical composition and bioactivities. HLJDD inhibited HCC cell proliferation at its non-toxic doses, and suppressed growth and angiogenesis in xenografted murine model. HLJDD suppressed the synthesis of nascent protein via inactivation of eEF2 without deregulating the translation initiation factors. The major components in HLJDD, geniposide, berberine and baicalin, additively act on eEF2, and contributed to the responsible activity. HLJDD-activated eEF2 kinase (eEF2K) led to eEF2 inactivation, and activation of AMPK signaling may be responsible for the eEF2K induction. Blocked AMPK activity in HLJDD-treated HCC cells attenuated eEF2K activation as well as the inhibitory effect of the formula. In nutrient deprived HCC cells with inactivated eEF2, the inhibitory effect of HLJDD in tumor cell expansion was interfered.
CONCLUSION:
Our results indicate that HLJDD has potential in blocking HCC progression with involvement of eEF2 inhibition.

Targeted online liquid chromatography electron capture dissociation mass spectrometry for the localization of sites of in vivo phosphorylation in human Sprouty2
We demonstrate a strategy employing collision-induced dissociation for phosphopeptide discovery, followed by targeted electron capture dissociation (ECD) for site localization. The high mass accuracy and low background noise of the ECD mass spectra allow facile sequencing of coeluting isobaric phosphopeptides, with up to two isobaric phosphopeptides sequenced from a single mass spectrum. In contrast to the previously described neutral loss of dependent ECD method, targeted ECD allows analysis of both phosphotyrosine peptides and lower abundance phosphopeptides. The approach was applied to phosphorylation analysis of human Sprouty2, a regulator of receptor tyrosine kinase signaling. Fifteen sites of phosphorylation were identified, 11 of which are novel
STATCOM evaluation in electrified railway using V/V and Scott power transformers
Rail transport has always been one of the greatest economic boosters of several world nations, allowing the freight and passenger transport. In addition, it is the most secure and economic land transportation mode. From the energetic perspective, the electric locomotives emerge as one of the most efficient land transportation mode, as well as allow a more sustainable development. However, when an electric locomotive is connected to the three-phase power grid, power quality (PQ) deterioration arise, leading to the distortion and unbalance of the three-phase power grid currents and voltages which imply higher operational costs, raising economic and functional issues. In order to overcome the PQ deterioration phenomena, several solutions based power electronics technology have been studied and developed. These solutions vary in terms of control, functionality, implementation costs and complexity. One of the existing solutions is a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM), which compensates the three-phase currents imbalance and harmonics. In this paper, a comprehensive review of the electrified railway systems is carried out, identifying the electric PQ phenomena which may appear due to the non-linear dynamic traction loads. Following this topic, a computational simulation of the STATCOM is presented, making analysis of its behavior regarding the PQ improvement in electrified railway systems. Two case studies are presented: (i) a traction power system fed with V/V power transformer; (ii) a traction power system fed with Scott power transformer. This work has been supported by FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia with-in the Project Scope: UID/CEC/00319/2019. Microinstability properties of negative magnetic shear discharges in the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor and DIII-D
The microinstability properties of discharges with negative (reversed) magnetic shear in the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) and DIII-D experiments with and without confinement transitions are investigated. A comprehensive kinetic linear eigenmode calculation employing the ballooning representation is employed with experimentally measured profile data, and using the corresponding numerically computed magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equilibria. The instability considered is the toroidal drift mode (trapped-electron-{eta}{sub i} mode). A variety of physical effects associated with differing q-profiles are explained. In addition, different negative magnetic shear discharges at different times in the discharge for TFTR and DIII-D are analyzed. The effects of sheared toroidal rotation, using data from direct spectroscopic measurements for carbon, are analyzed using comparisons with results from a two-dimensional calculation. Comparisons are also made for nonlinear stabilization associated with shear in E{sub r}/RB{sub {theta}}. The relative importance of changes in different profiles (density, temperature, q, rotation, etc.) on the linear growth rates is considered
