Board of Director Diversity and Firm Financial Performance

    Get PDF
This study examines the relationship between demographic diversity on boards of directors with firm financial performance. This relationship is examined using 1993 and 1998 financial performance data (return on asset and investment) and the percentage of women and minorities on boards of directors for 127 large US companies. Correlation and regression analyses indicate board diversity is positively associated with these financial indicators of firm performance. Implications for both strategic human resource management and future research are discussed

textabstractIntroduction: Receptor radionuclide therapy is a promising treatment modality for patients with neuroendocrine tumors for whom alternative treatments are limited. The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence of hormonal crises after therapy with the radiolabeled somatostatin analogue [177Lu-DOTA0,Tyr3]octreotate (177Lu-octreotate). Materials and methods: All177Lu- octreotate treatments between January 2000 and January 2007 were investigated. Four hundred seventy-six patients with gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors and three patients with metastatic pheochromocytoma were included for analysis. Results: Four hundred seventy-nine patients received a total of 1,693 administrations of177Lu-octreotate. Six of 479 patients (1%) developed severe symptoms because of massive release of bioactive substances after the first cycle of177Lu-octreotate. One patient had a metastatic hormone-producing small intestinal carcinoid; two patients had metastatic, hormone-producing bronchial carcinoids; two patients had vasoactive intestinal polypeptide-producing pancreatic endocrine tumors (VIPomas); and one patient had a metastatic pheochromocytoma. With adequate treatment, all patients eventually recovered. Conclusion: Hormonal crises after177Lu- octreotate therapy occur in 1% of patients. Generally,177Lu- octreotate therapy is well tolerated

Sharing vocabularies: towards horizontal alignment of values-driven business functions

This paper highlights the emergence of different ‘vocabularies’ that describe various values-driven business functions within large organisations and argues for improved horizontal alignment between them. We investigate two established functions that have long-standing organisational histories: Ethics and Compliance (E&C) and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). By drawing upon research on organisational alignment, we explain both the need for and the potential benefit of greater alignment between these values-driven functions. We then examine the structural and socio-cultural dimensions of organisational systems through which E&C and CSR horizontal alignment can be coordinated to improve synergies, address tensions, and generate insight to inform future research and practice in the field of Business and Society. The paper concludes with research questions that can inform future scholarly research and a practical model to guide organizations’ efforts towards inter-functional, horizontal alignment of values-driven organizational practice

A Field Study of Job Insecurity during a Financial Crisis

A major trend in the workplace is a recognition of the increasingly temporary nature of the work relationship. Even universities, which have traditionally offered long-term job security in the form of academic tenure, are not immune from that trend. Some universities no longer offer tenure, and financial pressures sometimes threaten the job security of tenured faculty. The increased focus on the temporary nature of the work relationship may lead to a sense of job insecurity among employees. The present study examined antecedents and outcomes of job insecurity following significant budget cuts at a major university. Perceptions of receiving sufficient and accurate information from organizational sources, tenure status, and tolerance for ambiguity predicted job insecurity. Job insecurity, in turn, predicted job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and withdrawal behaviors. Turnover for a 2-year period following the budget cuts was predicted by survey variables
