Gluon Saturation and Black Hole Criticality

We discuss the recent proposal in hep-th/0611312 where it was shown that the critical anomalous dimension associated to the onset of non-linear effects in the high energy limit of QCD coincides with the critical exponent governing the radius of the black hole formed in the spherically symmetric collapse of a massless scalar field. We argue that a new essential ingredient in this mapping between gauge theory and gravity is continuous self-similarity, not present in the scalar field case but in the spherical collapse of a perfect fluid with barotropic equation of state. We identify this property with geometric scaling, present in DIS data at small values of Bjorken x. We also show that the Choptuik exponent in dimension five tends to the QCD critical value in the traceless limit of the energy momentum tensor.Comment: Talk given at 12th International Conference on Elastic and Diffractive Scattering: Forward Physics and QCD, Hamburg, DESY, Germany, 21-25 May 200

Singular boundary behaviour and large solutions for fractional elliptic equations

    Get PDF
We perform a unified analysis for the boundary behaviour of solutions to nonlocal fractional equations posed in bounded domains. Based on previous findings for some models of the fractional Laplacian operator, we show how it strongly differs from the boundary behaviour of solutions to elliptic problems modelled upon the Laplace–Poisson equation with zero boundary data. In the classical case it is known that, at least in a suitable weak sense, solutions of the homogeneous Dirichlet problem with a forcing term tend to zero at the boundary. Limits of these solutions then produce solutions of some non-homogeneous Dirichlet problem as the interior data concentrate suitably to the boundary. Here, we show that, for equations driven by a wide class of nonlocal fractional operators, different blow-up phenomena may occur at the boundary of the domain. We describe such explosive behaviours and obtain precise quantitative estimates depending on simple parameters of the nonlocal operators. Our unifying technique is based on a careful study of the inverse operator in terms of the corresponding Green function

Using pp collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb−1 collected with the LHCb detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, the B0 → D−DĂŸKĂŸÏ€âˆ’ decay is studied. A new excited DĂŸ s meson is observed decaying into the DĂŸKĂŸÏ€âˆ’ final state with large statistical significance. The pole mass and width, and the spin parity of the new state are measured with an amplitude analysis to be mR ÂŒ 2591 6 7 MeV, ΓR ÂŒ 89 16 12 MeV, and JP ÂŒ 0−, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. Fit fractions for all components in the amplitude analysis are also reported. The new resonance, denoted as Ds0Ă°2590ĂžĂŸ, is a strong candidate to be the DsĂ°21 S0ĂžĂŸ state, the radial excitation of the pseudoscalar ground-state DĂŸ s meson

Non-invasive monitoring of hypoxia-inducible factor activation by optical imaging during antiangiogenic treatment in a xenograft model of ovarian carcinoma

Open Access Article.Targeting the hypoxia response pathway and angiogenesis are two promising therapeutic strategies for cancer treatment. Their use as single strategies has important limitations. Thus, development of combined regimens has become an important step toward improving therapeutic efficacy. Also, non-invasive monitoring of the response to targeted biological therapies, as well as determination of the optimal schedule for combination regimens has become an active field of research over the last five years, with relevance for both preclinical and clinical settings. Here, we used an optical imaging method to non-invasively monitor the functional changes in HIF activity in response to antiangiogenic treatment in a xenograft model of human ovarian carcinoma. A bioluminescent reporter construct containing nine copies of the hypoxia response element upstream of the luciferase gene (9xHRE-luciferase) was characterized in vitro in a panel of tumor cell lines and in vivo in a subcutaneous xenograft model of ovarian carcinoma by means of optical imaging. We showed that in OVCAR-3 subcutaneous xenografts, the most abrupt change in the HIF functional reporter occurs before the onset of massive tumor growth. However, this system failed to detect hypoxia induced upon antiangiogenic treatment due to the compensating effects of increased hypoxia and decreased tumor cell viability caused by imbalanced neovascularization vs. tumor expansion. Therefore, the readout based on HIF functional reporter could be conditioned by the dynamics of tumor growth and angiogenesis, which is highly variable depending on the tumor type, tumor model and stage of progression. This study was supported by grants from the Ministerio de Ciencia y TecnologĂa/Ministerio de Ciencia e InnovaciĂłn (SAF2008-03147 to LdP and SAF2010-19256 to BJ), Comunidad AutĂłnoma de Madrid (S-SAL-0311_2006) and the 7th Research Framework Programme of the European Union (METOXIA, project ref. Measurement of CP observables in B± → D(*)K± and B± → D(*) π ± decays using two-body D final states

    Get PDF
Measurements of CP observables in B± → D(∗)K± and B± → D(∗)π ± decays are presented, where D(∗) indicates a neutral D or D∗ meson that is an admixture of meson and anti-meson states. Decays of the D(∗) meson to the Dπ0 and DÎł final states are partially reconstructed without inclusion of the neutral pion or photon. Decays of the D meson are reconstructed in the K±π ∓, K+K−, and π +π − final states. The analysis uses a sample of charged B mesons produced in proton-proton collisions and collected with the LHCb experiment, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 2.0, 1.0, and 5.7 fb−1 taken at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV, respectively. The measurements of partially reconstructed B± → D(∗)K± and B± → D(∗)π ± with D → K∓π ± decays are the first of their kind, and a first observation of the B± → (Dπ0 )D∗ π ± decay is made with a significance of 6.1 standard deviations. All CP observables are measured with world-best precision, and in combination with other LHCb results will provide strong constraints on the CKM angle

Search for CP violation in D(s)+→h+π0 and D(s)+→h+η decays

    Searches for CP violation in the two-body decays D + (s) → h +π 0 and D + (s) → h +η (where h + denotes a π + or K+ meson) are performed using pp collision data collected by the LHCb experiment corresponding to either 9 fb−1 or 6 fb−1 of integrated luminosity. The π 0 and η mesons are reconstructed using the e +e −γ final state, which can proceed as three-body decays π 0 → e +e −γ and η → e +e −γ, or via the two-body decays π 0 → γγ and η → γγ followed by a photon conversion. The measurements are made relative to the control modes D + (s)→ K0 S h + to cancel the production and detection asymmetries. The CP asymmetries are measured to b

A new method to trace colloid transport pathways in macroporous soils using X‐ray computed tomography and fluorescence macrophotography

    Get PDF
The fast and deep percolation of particles through soil is attributed to preferential flow pathways, and their extent can be critical in the filtering of particulate pollutants in soil. Particle deposition on the pore walls and transport between the pores and matrix modulate the preferential flow of particulate pollutants. In the present research, we developed a novel method of combining fluorescence macrophotography and X‐ray computed tomography (CT) to track preferential pathways of colloidal fluorescent microspheres (MS) in breakthrough experiments. We located accumulations of MS by fluorescence imaging and used them to delimit the deposition structures along the preferential colloid pathways by superimposing these images on the 3‐D pore network obtained from CT. Advection–diffusion with transport parameters from the dual‐porosity equation correlated with preferential pathway features across different soil management techniques. However, management did not influence the morphology of the MS preferential pathways. Preferential flow occurred in only a small fraction of the total pore network and was controlled by pores connected to the soil surface and by matrix density

Muon identification for LHCb Run 3

Muon identification is of paramount importance for the physics programme of LHCb. In the upgrade phase, starting from Run 3 of the LHC, the trigger of the experiment will be solely based on software. The luminosity increase to 2×10332\times10^{33} cm−2^{-2}s−1^{-1} will require an improvement of the muon identification criteria, aiming at performances equal or better than those of Run 2, but in a much more challenging environment. In this paper, two new muon identification algorithms developed in view of the LHCb upgrade are presented, and their performance in terms of signal efficiency versus background reduction is shown

Activation of Serine One-Carbon Metabolism by Calcineurin A beta 1 Reduces Myocardial Hypertrophy and Improves Ventricular Function

    Get PDF
Background In response to pressure overload, the heart develops ventricular hypertrophy that progressively decompensates and leads to heart failure. This pathological hypertrophy is mediated, among others, by the phosphatase calcineurin and is characterized by metabolic changes that impair energy production by mitochondria. Objectives The authors aimed to determine the role of the calcineurin splicing variant CnAÎČ1 in the context of cardiac hypertrophy and its mechanism of action. Methods Transgenic mice overexpressing CnAÎČ1 specifically in cardiomyocytes and mice lacking the unique C-terminal domain in CnAÎČ1 (CnAÎČ1Δi12 mice) were used. Pressure overload hypertrophy was induced by transaortic constriction. Cardiac function was measured by echocardiography. Mice were characterized using various molecular analyses. Results In contrast to other calcineurin isoforms, the authors show here that cardiac-specific overexpression of CnAÎČ1 in transgenic mice reduces cardiac hypertrophy and improves cardiac function. This effect is mediated by activation of serine and one-carbon metabolism, and the production of antioxidant mediators that prevent mitochondrial protein oxidation and preserve ATP production. The induction of enzymes involved in this metabolic pathway by CnAÎČ1 is dependent on mTOR activity. Inhibition of serine and one-carbon metabolism blocks the beneficial effects of CnAÎČ1. CnAÎČ1Δi12 mice show increased cardiac hypertrophy and declined contractility. Conclusions The metabolic reprogramming induced by CnAÎČ1 redefines the role of calcineurin in the heart and shows for the first time that activation of the serine and one-carbon pathway has beneficial effects on cardiac hypertrophy and function, paving the way for new therapeutic approaches
