Adaptation and Resilience of Interdependent Infrastructure Systems: a Complex Systems Perspective

    Get PDF
The effects of disruption upon one or more components in interdependent infrastructure systems and the ability of the system to return to normal operations, is investigated in this paper. This addresses the concept of resilience, and examines the trade-off between redundancy and efficiency, as well as the adaptive ability of a system to respond to disruptions and continue to operate, albeit not necessarily as it did initially

A new approach of analyzing GRB light curves

    Get PDF
We estimated the Txx quantiles of the cumulative GRB light curves using our recalculated background. The basic information of the light curves was extracted by multivariate statistical methods. The possible classes of the light curves are also briefly discussed.Comment: 4 pages, 8 figure

    Anderson localization at large disorder

The localization of one-electron states in the large (but finite) disorder limit is investigated. The inverse participation number shows a non--monotonic behavior as a function of energy owing to anomalous behavior of few-site localization. The two-site approximation is solved analytically and shown to capture the essential features found in numerical simulations on one-, two- and three-dimensional systems. Further improvement has been obtained by solving a three-site model.Comment: 4+ pages, 5 figure

On Renyi entropies characterizing the shape and the extension of the phase space representation of quantum wave functions in disordered systems

We discuss some properties of the generalized entropies, called Renyi entropies and their application to the case of continuous distributions. In particular it is shown that these measures of complexity can be divergent, however, their differences are free from these divergences thus enabling them to be good candidates for the description of the extension and the shape of continuous distributions. We apply this formalism to the projection of wave functions onto the coherent state basis, i.e. to the Husimi representation. We also show how the localization properties of the Husimi distribution on average can be reconstructed from its marginal distributions that are calculated in position and momentum space in the case when the phase space has no structure, i.e. no classical limit can be defined. Numerical simulations on a one dimensional disordered system corroborate our expectations.Comment: 8 pages with 2 embedded eps figures, RevTex4, AmsMath included, submitted to PR

Effective Q-Q Interactions in Constituent Quark Models

We study the performance of some recent potential models suggested as effective interactions between constituent quarks. In particular, we address constituent quark models for baryons with hybrid Q-Q interactions stemming from one-gluon plus meson exchanges. Upon recalculating two of such models we find them to fail in describing the N and \Delta spectra. Our calculations are based on accurate solutions of the three-quark systems in both a variational Schr\"odinger and a rigorous Faddeev approach. It is argued that hybrid {Q-Q} interactions encounter difficulties in describing baryon spectra due to the specific contributions from one-gluon and pion exchanges together. In contrast, a chiral constituent quark model with a Q-Q interaction solely derived from Goldstone-boson exchange is capable of providing a unified description of both the N and \Delta spectra in good agreement with phenomenology.Comment: 21 pages, LaTe
