    Most research studies in biomechanics directly measure body segment lengths via anthropometry or digitization of joint markers. There are circumstances in which estimating segment lengths in relation to height is desirable, such as in biomechanical modelling or in the classroom. One commonly used model for this purpose is that by Drillis and Contini (1966; cited in Winter, 2005). One problem with this model is that the initial data was derived from adults, and thus has potentially limited applicability to the study of biomechanics in children. The purpose of the present study was to compare actual selected upper body segment lengths measured via anthropometry to those predicted by Drillis and Contini and also to derive regression equations for those segment lengths based on height and age (separately for males and females)

    Evidence That the P\u3csub\u3ei\u3c/sub\u3e Release Event Is the Rate-Limiting Step in the Nitrogenase Catalytic Cycle

    Nitrogenase reduction of dinitrogen (N2) to ammonia (NH3) involves a sequence of events that occur upon the transient association of the reduced Fe protein containing two ATP molecules with the MoFe protein that includes electron transfer, ATP hydrolysis, Pi release, and dissociation of the oxidized, ADP-containing Fe protein from the reduced MoFe protein. Numerous kinetic studies using the nonphysiological electron donor dithionite have suggested that the rate-limiting step in this reaction cycle is the dissociation of the Fe protein from the MoFe protein. Here, we have established the rate constants for each of the key steps in the catalytic cycle using the physiological reductant flavodoxin protein in its hydroquinone state. The findings indicate that with this reductant, the rate-limiting step in the reaction cycle is not protein–protein dissociation or reduction of the oxidized Fe protein, but rather events associated with the Pi release step. Further, it is demonstrated that (i) Fe protein transfers only one electron to MoFe protein in each Fe protein cycle coupled with hydrolysis of two ATP molecules, (ii) the oxidized Fe protein is not reduced when bound to MoFe protein, and (iii) the Fe protein interacts with flavodoxin using the same binding interface that is used with the MoFe protein. These findings allow a revision of the rate-limiting step in the nitrogenase Fe protein cycle

    Perceived Impact of a Longitudinal Leadership Program for All Pharmacy Students

    Objective: To describe a longitudinal leadership program involving all students and report the perceived impact. Design: The program included a first year Leadership Interview, a third year Report of Leadership, and a fourth year Professional Business Meeting Attendance. Activities involved guided reflection. Assessment: Students (n=138) indicated the activities helped them recognize the importance of leadership and their leadership potential (e.g., 72.5% and 62.3% of students due to meeting attendance, respectively). Students participated in leadership activities that they would not have pursued otherwise, either in response to the activity (27.7% due to interview) or as a requirement of the activity (51.1% for leadership report). Students reported developing specific leadership skills through the activities. Most students planned to be involved in a district/regional (72.5%), state (84.1%), and national (51.4%) meeting in the five years following graduation. Conclusion: Students reported a positive impact on leadership perceptions and participation. The report is a preliminary step in the development and assessment of a longitudinal curricular initiative involving all pharmacy students.   Type: Case Stud

    Development work on the study of consolidation techniques for Zircaloy fuel-cladding hulls included scouting tests on volatility schemes for separating the zirconium as the volatile tetrachloride and ignition tests on several Zircaloy materials to further characterize the pyrophoric behavior of Zircaloy. All tests were with nonirradiated metal pending acquisition of irradiated samples. Installation is nearly complete of a glovebox facility for studies on the salvage of alpha-contaminated metals by pyrochemical methods. Disposal of a major portion of fission product tritium formed in light water reactor fuels by deep- well injection of the low-level aqueous waste from plants reprocessing such fuels is being evaluated. The question of siting is a very important factor in determining the feasibility of this particular disposal option. A review is given of the status of information for U. S. sedimentary basins, the areas most likely to be generally suitable for siting of waste wells. Work on the reliability of high-level-waste canisters included an examination of creep, shot- peening, and subcooling of the filler canister below storage temperatures, as methods of relieving stresses induced in canisters due to differential contraction of canister and glass during cooling. A method was investigated for relieving stresses in calcine-filled canisters. Properties of fission product oxides were examined to elucidate possible adverse corrosive effects at the canister-waste interface. (LK

    Different feeding strategies in scavenging amphipods and their implications for colonisation success in times of retreating glaciers.

    Background: Scavenger guilds, composed of a variety of species, co-existing in the same habitat, are responsible for biomass transformation throughout the food web. Niche partitioning among them can manifest in different feeding strategies, e.g. during carcass feeding. In the bentho-pelagic realm of the Southern Ocean, scavenging amphipods of the speciose superfamily Lysianassoidea are amongst the ubiquitous taxa and occupy an essential role in decomposition processes. First, we addressed the question whether scavenging lysianassoid amphipods have different feeding strategies during carcass feeding, and if their potential synergistic feeding activities influence carcass decomposition. To this end, we compared the relatively large-sized species Waldeckia obesa with the small-sized species Cheirimedon femoratus, Hippomedon kergueleni, and Orchomenella rotundifrons during carcass feeding (Notothenia spp.). Our approach combines ex situ feeding experiments, behavioural observations, and scanning electron microscopic analyses of mandibles. Secondly, we aimed to detect ecological drivers for succession patterns of scavenging amphipods in Antarctic coastal ecosystems affected by environmental disturbances. In Potter Cove, the climate-driven rapid retreat of the Fourcade Glacier is causing various environmental changes including the provision of new marine habitats to colonise. While in the newly ice-free areas fish records are rare, macroalgae have already colonised hard substrates. Therefore, we carried out feeding assays of the most abundant lysianassoids in Potter Cove C. femoratus and H. kergueleni, to determine their consumption rates (mg food x mg amphipods-1 x day-1) and preferences of macroalgae and fish. Results We detected two functional groups with different feeding strategies among the investigated scavenging amphipods: the 'outside-insider' (openers) and 'inside-outsider' (squeezers). Synergistic effects during carcass feeding was not statistical evident. C. femoratus showed a flexible diet when fish was not available by consuming macroalgae with a consumption about 0.2 day-1 but preferred fish with feedings rates up to 0.8 day-1. Contrary, H. kergueleni rejected macroalgae entirely and consumed fish with consumption rates up to 0.8 day-1. Conclusion This study reveals functional groups in scavenging shallow water amphipods and provides new information on coastal intraguild niche partitioning. Moreover, we conclude that dietary flexibility of scavenging amphipods is a potential ecological driver for succession and colonisation of newly available ice-free Antarctic coastal habitats
