    Neoliberalisation and 'lad cultures' in higher education

    This paper links HE neoliberalisation and ‘lad cultures’, drawing on interviews and focus groups with women students. We argue that retro-sexist ‘laddish’ forms of masculine competitiveness and misogyny have been reshaped by neoliberal rationalities to become modes of consumerist sexualised audit. We also suggest that neoliberal frameworks scaffold an individualistic and adversarial culture among young people that interacts with perceived threats to men’s privilege and intensifies attempts to put women in their place through misogyny and sexual harassment. Furthermore, ‘lad cultures’, sexism and sexual harassment in higher education may be invisibilised by institutions to preserve marketability in a neoliberal context. In response, we ask if we might foster dialogue and partnership between feminist and anti-marketisation politics

    Temporal, Situational and Interactional Features of Women’s Violent Conflicts

    This article examines contextual and situational influences on the processural development of women\u27s violent conflicts. Through close analysis of 3 women\u27s accounts of their disputes and associated violent behaviours, we provide a rich description of how such events evolved over time and how the interviewees managed this process. Drawing upon both criminological and feminist theories, our analysis highlights existing gaps in the literature, providing an exploratory discussion of the interaction of gender with situational elements and the production of assaultive events

    The Eyes Have It: Sex and Sexual Orientation Differences in Pupil Dilation Patterns

    Recent research suggests profound sex and sexual orientation differences in sexual response. These results, however, are based on measures of genital arousal, which have potential limitations such as volunteer bias and differential measures for the sexes. The present study introduces a measure less affected by these limitations. We assessed the pupil dilation of 325 men and women of various sexual orientations to male and female erotic stimuli. Results supported hypotheses. In general, self-reported sexual orientation corresponded with pupil dilation to men and women. Among men, substantial dilation to both sexes was most common in bisexual-identified men. In contrast, among women, substantial dilation to both sexes was most common in heterosexual-identified women. Possible reasons for these differences are discussed. Because the measure of pupil dilation is less invasive than previous measures of sexual response, it allows for studying diverse age and cultural populations, usually not included in sexuality research

    Electrical Brain Stimulation During a Retrieval-Based Learning Task Can Impair Long-Term Memory

    Anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) has been shown to improve performance on a multitude of cognitive tasks. These are, however, often simple tasks, testing only one cognitive domain at a time. Therefore, the efficacy of brain stimulation for complex tasks has yet to be understood. Using a task designed to increase learning efficiency, this study investigates whether anodal tDCS over the left DLPFC can modulate both learning ability and subsequent long-term memory retention. Using a within-subject design, participants (N = 25) took part in 6 training sessions over consecutive days in which active or sham stimulation was administered randomly (3 of each). A computer-based task was used, containing flags from countries unknown to the participants. Each training session consisted of the repetition of 8 pairs of flag/country names. Subsequently, in three testing sessions, free, cued, and timed cued recall, participants were assessed on all 48 flags they had learnt. No difference in learning speed between active and sham tDCS was found. Furthermore, in the timed cued recall phase, flags learnt in the sham tDCS sessions were recalled significantly better than flags learnt in the active tDCS sessions. This effect was stronger in the second testing session. It was also found that for the flags answered incorrectly; thus, meaning they were presented more frequently, subsequent long-term retention was improved. These results suggest that for a complex task, anodal tDCS is ineffective at improving learning speed and potentially detrimental to long-term retention when employed during encoding. This serves to highlight the complex nature of brain stimulation, providing a greater understanding of its limitations and drawbacks

    Role of state-dependency in memory impairment induced by acute administration of midazolam in mice

    Although the memory deficits produced by pre-training benzodiazepines administration have been extensively demonstrated both in humans and in animal studies, there is considerable controversy about the involvement of the state-dependency phenomenon on benzodiazepines-induced anterograde amnesia. the present study aimed to characterize the role of state-dependency on memory deficits induced by the benzodiazepine midazolam (MID) in mice submitted to the plus-maze discriminative avoidance task (PM-DAT). This animal model concomitantly evaluates learning and retention of discriminative avoidance task, exploratory habituation as well as anxiety-like behavior and motor activity. Mice received 2 mg/kg MID before training and/or before testing in the PM-DAT. Pre-training (but not pre-test) MID administration impaired the retention of the discriminative avoidance task, which was not counteracted by a subsequent pre-test administration of this drug, thus refuting the role of state-dependency. Conversely, the pre-training administration of MID also led to an impairment of the habituation of exploration in the PM-DAT (an animal model of non-associative memory). This habituation deficit was state-dependent since it was absent in pre-training plus pretest MID treated mice. Concomitantly, MID pre-training administration induced anxiolytic effects and diminished the aversive effectiveness of the aversive stimuli of the task, leading to an impairment of the acquisition of the discriminative avoidance task. Our findings suggest that pre-training benzodiazepine administration can impair the retention of different types of memory by producing specific deleterious effects on learning or by inducing state-dependent memory deficits.
