DETAILED MODELING OF UPFLOW ANAEROBIC FIXED FILM REACTORS

    Get PDF
Upflow anaerobic fixed film reactors with high retention time or discontinuously loaded may result in rather large microbial aggregate fragments that are retained in the reactor. A structured model, based on the dynamics of a discrete bivariant distribution of sizes of bacterial aggregates and gas bubbles, has been developed which offers a methodological way to formulate hypothesis, detect some limit situations and achieve a mathematical syn- thesis of empirical knowledge about the considered phenomena. Experimental validation of the model has been carried out with satisfactory results

Decentralized Manufacturing Supply Chains Coordination under Uncertain Competitiveness

AbstractThe coordination of decentralized multi-product manufacturing SCs is achieved through negotiations based on expected win-win principles in an uncertain competitive environment. Based on non-symmetrical roles of the different actors, the client (as leader) is supposed to propose coordination contracts according to its best expected conditions, taking into account the uncertain reaction of the provider (follower). This uncertain reaction is modeled as a probability of acceptance, computed according to the overall scenario conditions, which include the presence of 3rd parties. Different negotiation scenarios are analyzed considering cooperative and non-cooperative cases. The resulting MINLP tactical models are illustrated using a case study with different providers (follower SC) around a client (leader SC) interacting in a global decentralized scenario. The negotiations based on non-cooperative cases proves to identify the situation with higher independent profit expectations. Moreover, the proposed approach shows the importance of considering the uncertainty associated with the response of the follower to the leader's decisions, resulting from a wider knowledge of its options

Simultaneous treatment with statins and aspirin reduces the risk of prostate cancer detection and tumorigenic properties in prostate cancer cell lines

Nowadays prostate cancer is the most common solid tumor in men from industrialized countries and the second leading cause of death. At the ages when PCa is usually diagnosed, mortality related to cardiovascular morbidity is high; therefore, men at risk for PCa frequently receive chronic lipid-lowering and antiplatelet treatment. The aim of this study was to analyze how chronic treatment with statins, aspirin, and their combination influenced the risk of PCa detection. The tumorigenic properties of these treatments were evaluated by proliferation, colony formation, invasion, and migration assays using different PCa cell lines, in order to assess how these treatments act at molecular level. The results showed that a combination of statins and aspirin enhances the effect of individual treatments and seems to reduce the risk of PCa detection (OR: 0.616 (95% CI: 0.467-0.812), ). However, if treatments are maintained, aspirin (OR: 1.835 (95% CI: 1.068-3.155), ) or the combination of both drugs (OR: 3.059 (95% CI: 1.894-4.939), ) represents an increased risk of HGPCa. As observed at clinical level, these beneficial effects in vitro are enhanced when both treatments are administered simultaneously, suggesting that chronic, concomitant treatment with statins and aspirin has a protective effect on PCa incidence

FXYD5/Dysadherin, a Biomarker of Endometrial Cancer Myometrial Invasion and Aggressiveness : Its Relationship With TGF-β1 and NF-κB Pathways

Objective: Endometrial cancer (EC) is the second most common gynecological cancer worldwide. Myometrial invasion (MI) is a key event in EC dissemination. This study aimed to evaluate FXYD5/dysadherin (FXYD5/Dys) expression in EC tissue and uterine aspirate (UA) biopsies and to assess molecular/functional changes associated with its expression in cellular models. Methods: FXYD5/Dys messenger RNA (mRNA) levels were determined in EC tissue and UA biopsies. FXYD5/Dys expression was evaluated in EC RNAseq data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and GENEVESTIGATOR tools. FXYD5/Dys impact on E-cadherin expression and cell behavior was assessed in EC Hec1a cells treated with transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1, stably transfected with ETV5, and transiently transfected with FXYD5/Dys small interfering RNA (siRNA) or pcDNA3-FXYD5/Dys plasmid. Results: FXYD5/Dys was associated with EC aggressiveness, finding high mRNA levels in tumors depicting MI > 50%, Grade 3, and intermediate/high risk of recurrence. FXYD5/Dys was highly expressed at the tumor invasive front compared to the superficial area. Most results were recapitulated in UA biopsies. FXYD5/Dys modulation in Hec1a cells altered cell migration/adhesion and E-cadherin expression. TGF-β1 treatment of Hec1a cells induced FXYD5/Dys expression. TCGA-UCEC RNAseq analysis revealed a positive correlation between FXYD5/Dys, TGF-β1, and plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI)-1 mRNA levels. FXYD5/Dys induced nuclear factor (NF)-κB pathway activation in Hec1a cells. FXYD5/Dys mRNA levels positively correlated with transcriptional activation of NF-κB p65-regulated genes. Survival analysis revealed patient segregation into low- and high-risk groups, the latter depicting the highest FXYD5/Dys, PAI-1, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and TGF-β1 mRNA levels and shorter survival rates. Conclusion: FXYD5/Dys is a novel biomarker of EC progression related to TGF-β1 and NF-κB pathways that collectively promote tumor dissemination and result in poor patient prognosis

APPLIED ADAPTIVE DYNAMICAL IDENTIFICATION TO THE PREDICTION OF CHEMICAL PROCESS EVOLUTION: A Case Study

A Self Tuning/Adaptive Control Algorithm has been developed and tested. This control has proved to be efficient to maintain the pH effluent of the bench set-up at neutrality. It has been compared with other conventional controllers showing its greater ca-pacity to stand the high changing dynamic of the controlled plant. The minimal control equipment has been chosen in order to approach experimental conditions to industrial real cases. This selection increases the difficulty of the control. Adaptation has proved to be a reliable strategy even under additional constraints. The control goal has been achieved: The developed Self Tuning/ Adaptive Regulator guarantees, in a satisfactory way, pH neutralization without having to use holding stages and even standing in front of hard perturbations

Minimization Of Water Consumption And Wastewater Discharge In The Sugar Cane Industry

    No full text
A comprehensive model has been developed for water minimization and wastewater discharge in the sugarcane industry. As starting point, it is considered that each production unit has a specified consumption of water that must be supplied from the fresh water sources or from one of the sources of regenerated water. In agreement with the concentration of contaminants either the water streams can be reused without treatment, or the best treatment alternative can be selected (taking into consideration its cost and contaminant removal efficiency). The streams are assigned to a treatment system and then the details of the quantities of water that will be reused are calculated. The application of the proposed methodology a case study based on a industrial situation is presented. © 2000 Elsevier B.V.
