Steady, oscillatory, and unsteady subsonic Aerodynamics, production version 1.1 (SOUSSA-P1.1). Volume 2: User/programmer manual
A user/programmer manual for the computer program SOUSSA P 1.1 is presented. The program was designed to provide accurate and efficient evaluation of steady and unsteady loads on aircraft having arbitrary shapes and motions, including structural deformations. These design goals were in part achieved through the incorporation of the data handling capabilities of the SPAR finite element Structural Analysis computer program. As a further result, SOUSSA P possesses an extensive checkpoint/ restart facility. The programmer's portion of this manual includes overlay/subroutine hierarchy, logical flow of control, definition of SOUSSA P 1.1 FORTRAN variables, and definition of SOUSSA P 1.1 subroutines. Purpose of the SOUSSA P 1.1 modules, input data to the program, output of the program, hardware/software requirements, error detection and reporting capabilities, job control statements, a summary of the procedure for running the program and two test cases including input and output and listings are described in the user oriented portion of the manual
Optimization of the leak conductance in the squid giant axon
We report on a theoretical study showing that the leak conductance density,
\GL, in the squid giant axon appears to be optimal for the action potential
firing frequency. More precisely, the standard assumption that the leak current
is composed of chloride ions leads to the result that the experimental value
for \GL is very close to the optimal value in the Hodgkin-Huxley model which
minimizes the absolute refractory period of the action potential, thereby
maximizing the maximum firing frequency under stimulation by sharp, brief input
current spikes to one end of the axon. The measured value of \GL also appears
to be close to optimal for the frequency of repetitive firing caused by a
constant current input to one end of the axon, especially when temperature
variations are taken into account. If, by contrast, the leak current is assumed
to be composed of separate voltage-independent sodium and potassium currents,

Comparative Analysis of a Transition Region Bright Point with a Blinker and Coronal Bright Point Using Multiple EIS Emission Lines
Since their discovery twenty year ago, transition region bright points
(TRBPs) have never been observed spectroscopically. Bright point properties
have not been compared with similar transition region and coronal structures.
In this work we have investigated three transient quiet Sun brightenings
including a TRBP, a coronal BP (CBP) and a blinker. We use time-series
observations of the extreme ultraviolet emission lines of a wide range of
temperature T (log T = 5.3 - 6.4) from the EUV imaging spectrometer (EIS)
onboard the Hinode satellite. We present the EIS temperature maps and Doppler
maps, which are compared with magnetograms from the Michelson Doppler Imager
(MDI) onboard the SOHO satellite. Doppler velocities of the TR BP and blinker
are <,25 km s, which is typical of transient TR phenomena. The Dopper
velocities of the CBP were found to be < 20 km s^{-1} with exception of those
measured at log T = 6.2 where a distinct bi-directional jet is observed. From
an EM loci analysis we find evidence of single and double isothermal components
in the TRBP and CBP, respectively. TRBP and CBP loci curves are characterized
by broad distributions suggesting the existence of unresolved structure. By
comparing and contrasting the physical characteristics of the events we find
the BP phenomena are an indication of multi-scaled self similarity, given
similarities in both their underlying magnetic field configuration and
evolution in relation to EUV flux changes. In contrast, the blinker phenomena
and the TRBP are sufficiently dissimilar in their observed properties as to
constitute different event classes. Our work indicates that the measurement of
similar characteristics across multiple event types holds class-predictive
power, and is a significant step towards automated solar atmospheric
multi-class classification of unresolved transient EUV sources.Comment: 38 pages, 16 figure

Relative Reactivity of the Metal-Amido versus Metal-Imido Bond in Linked Cp-Amido and Half-Sandwich Complexes of Vanadium
Treatment of (η5-C5H4C2H4NR)V(N-t-Bu)Me (R = Me, i-Pr) and CpV(N-p-Tol)(N-i-Pr2)Me (Cp = η5-C5H5) with B(C6F5)3 or [Ph3C][B(C6F5)4] results in formation of the corresponding cations, [(η5-C5H4C2H4NR)V(N-t-Bu)]+ and [CpV(N-p-Tol)(N-i-Pr2)]+. The latter could also be generated as its N,N-dimethylaniline adduct by treatment of the methyl complex with [PhNMe2H][BAr4] (Ar = Ph, C6F5). Instead, the analogous reaction with the linked Cp-amido precursor results in protonation of the imido-nitrogen atom. Sequential cyclometalation of the amide substituents gave cationic imine complexes [(η5-C5H4C2H4NCR'2)V(NH-t-Bu)]+ (R' = H, Me) and methane. Reaction of cationic [(η5-C5H4C2H4NR)V(N-t-Bu)]+ with olefins affords the corresponding olefin adducts, whereas treatment with 1 or 2 equiv of 2-butyne results in insertion of the alkyne into the vanadium-nitrogen single bond, affording the mono- and bis-insertion products [(η5-C5H4C2H4N(i-Pr)C2Me2)V(N-t-Bu)]+ and [(η5-C5H4C2H4N(i-Pr)C4Me4)V(N-t-Bu)]+. The same reaction with the half-sandwich compound [CpV(N-p-Tol)(N-i-Pr2)]+ results in a paramagnetic compound that, upon alcoholysis, affords sec-butylidene-p-tolylamine, suggesting an initial [2+2] cycloaddition reaction. The difference in reactivity between the V-N bond versus the V=N bond was further studied using computational methods. Results were compared to the isoelectronic titanium system CpTi(NH)(NH2). These studies indicate that the kinetic product in each system is derived from a [2+2] cycloaddition reaction. For titanium, this was found as the thermodynamic product as well, whereas the insertion reaction was found to be thermodynamically more favorable in the case of vanadium.
LAP3, a novel plant protein required for pollen development, is essential for proper exine formation
We isolated lap3-1 and lap3-2 mutants in ascreen for pollen that displays abnormal stigma binding.Unlike wild-type pollen, lap3-1 and lap3-2 pollen exine isthinner, weaker, and is missing some connections betweentheir roof-like tectum structures. We describe the mappingand identification of LAP3 as a novel gene that contains arepetitive motif found in b-propeller enzymes. Insertionmutations in LAP3 lead to male sterility. To investigatepossible roles for LAP3 in pollen development, we assayedthe metabolite profile of anther tissues containing developingpollen grains and found that the lap3-2 defect leadsto a broad range of metabolic changes. The largest changeswere seen in levels of a straight-chain hydrocarbon nonacosaneand in naringenin chalcone, an obligate compoundin the flavonoid biosynthesis pathway
Consistent Application of Maximum Entropy to Quantum-Monte-Carlo Data
Bayesian statistics in the frame of the maximum entropy concept has widely
been used for inferential problems, particularly, to infer dynamic properties
of strongly correlated fermion systems from Quantum-Monte-Carlo (QMC) imaginary
time data. In current applications, however, a consistent treatment of the
error-covariance of the QMC data is missing. Here we present a closed Bayesian

Cosmic Swarms: A search for Supermassive Black Holes in the LISA data stream with a Hybrid Evolutionary Algorithm
We describe a hybrid evolutionary algorithm that can simultaneously search
for multiple supermassive black hole binary (SMBHB) inspirals in LISA data. The
algorithm mixes evolutionary computation, Metropolis-Hastings methods and
Nested Sampling. The inspiral of SMBHBs presents an interesting problem for
gravitational wave data analysis since, due to the LISA response function, the
sources have a bi-modal sky solution. We show here that it is possible not only
to detect multiple SMBHBs in the data stream, but also to investigate
simultaneously all the various modes of the global solution. In all cases, the
algorithm returns parameter determinations within (as estimated from
the Fisher Matrix) of the true answer, for both the actual and antipodal sky

Ground-State Dynamical Correlation Functions: An Approach from Density Matrix Renormalization Group Method
A numerical approach to ground-state dynamical correlation functions from
Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) is developed. Using sum rules,
moments of a dynamic correlation function can be calculated with DMRG, and with
the moments the dynamic correlation function can be obtained by the maximum
entropy method. We apply this method to one-dimensional spinless fermion
system, which can be converted to the spin 1/2 Heisenberg model in a special
case. The dynamical density-density correlation function is obtained.Comment: 11 pages, latex, 4 figure
Rotating Nuclear Rings and Extreme Starbursts in Ultraluminous Galaxies
New high resolution interferometer data of 10 IR ultraluminous galaxies shows
the molecular gas is in rotating nuclear rings or disks with radii 300 to 800
pc. Most of the CO flux comes from a moderate-density, warm, intercloud medium
rather than self-gravitating clouds. Gas masses of ~ 5 x 10^9 Msun, 5 times
lower than the standard method are derived from a model of the molecular disks.
The ratio of molecular gas to dynamical mass, is M_gas/M_dyn ~ 1/6 with a
maximum ratio of gas to total mass surface density of 1/3. For the galaxies
VIIZw31, Arp193, and IRAS 10565+24, there is good evidence for rotating
molecular rings with a central gap. In addition to the rotating rings a new
class of star formation region is identified which we call an Extreme
Starburst. They have a characteristic size of only 100 pc., about 10^9 Msun of
gas and an IR luminosity of ~3 x 10^11 Lsun. Four extreme starbursts are
identified in the 3 closest galaxies in the sample Arp220, Arp193 and Mrk273.
They are the most prodigious star formation events in the local universe, each
representing about 1000 times as many OB stars as 30 Doradus. In Arp220, the CO
and 1.3 mm continuum maps show the two ``nuclei'' embedded in a central ring or
disk and a fainter structure extending 3 kpc to the east, normal to the nuclear
disk. There is no evidence that these sources really are the pre-merger nuclei.
They are compact, extreme starburst regions containing 10^9 Msun of dense
molecular gas and new stars, but no old stars. Most of the dust emission and
HCN emission arises in the two extreme starbursts. The entire bolometric
luminosity of Arp~220 comes from starbursts, not an AGN. In Mrk231, the disk
geometry shows that the molecular disk cannot be heated by the AGN; the far IR
luminosity of Mrk~231 is powered by a starburst, not the AGN. (Abridged)Comment: 97 pages Latex with aasms.sty, including 29 encapsulated Postscript
