Simulation of UHE muons propagation for GEANT3
A simulation package for the transport of high energy muons has been
developed. It has been conceived to replace the muon propagation software
modules implemented in the detector simulation program GEANT3. Here we discuss
the results achieved with our package and we check the agreement with numerical

Tau energy losses at ultra-high energy: continuous versus stochastic treatment
We study the energy losses of the tau lepton in matter through
electromagnetic processes at ultra-high energy (UHE). We use both a stochastic
and a continuous framework to treat these interactions and compare the flux of
tau leptons propagated after some amount of matter. We discuss the accuracy of
the approximation of continuous energy losses by studying the propagation in
standard rock of taus with both mono-energetic and power law injection spectra.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figure
Charged Current Neutrino Cross Section and Tau Energy Loss at Ultra-High Energies
We evaluate both the tau lepton energy loss produced by photonuclear
interactions and the neutrino charged current cross section at ultra-high
energies, relevant to neutrino bounds with Earth-skimming tau neutrinos, using
different theoretical and phenomenological models for nucleon and nucleus
structure functions. The theoretical uncertainty is estimated by taking
different extrapolations of the structure function F2 to very low values of x,
in the low and moderate Q2 range for the tau lepton interaction and at high Q2
for the neutrino-nucleus inelastic cross section. It is at these extremely low
values of x where nuclear shadowing and parton saturation effects are unknown
and could be stronger than usually considered. For tau and neutrino energies
E=10^9 GeV we find uncertainties of a factor 4 for the tau energy loss and of a
factor 2 for the charged current neutrino-nucleus cross section.Comment: 20 pages and 11 figure
Measurements of integral muon intensity at large zenith angles
High-statistics data on near-horizontal muons collected with Russian-Italian
coordinate detector DECOR are analyzed. Precise measurements of muon angular
distributions in zenith angle interval from 60 to 90 degrees have been
performed. In total, more than 20 million muons are selected. Dependences of
the absolute integral muon intensity on zenith angle for several threshold
energies ranging from 1.7 GeV to 7.2 GeV are derived. Results for this region
of zenith angles and threshold energies have been obtained for the first time.
The dependence of integral intensity on zenith angle and threshold energy is
well fitted by a simple analytical formula.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, 1 tabl
Propagation of Muons and Taus at High Energies
The photonuclear contribution to charged lepton energy loss has been
re-evaluated taking into account HERA results on real and virtual photon
interactions with nucleons. With large processes incorporated, the
average muon range in rock for muon energies of GeV is reduced by only
5% as compared with the standard treatment. We have calculated the tau energy
loss for energies up to GeV taking into consideration the decay of the
tau. A Monte Carlo evaluation of tau survival probability and range show that
at energies below GeV, depending on the material, only tau decays
are important. At higher energies the tau energy losses are significant,
reducing the survival probability of the tau. We show that the average range
for tau is shorter than its decay length and reduce to 17 km in water for an
incident tau energy of GeV, as compared with its decay length of 49 km
at that energy. In iron, the average tau range is 4.7 km for the same incident

High rate, fast timing Glass RPC for the high {\eta} CMS muon detectors
The HL-LHC phase is designed to increase by an order of magnitude the amount
of data to be collected by the LHC experiments. To achieve this goal in a
reasonable time scale the instantaneous luminosity would also increase by an
order of magnitude up to . The region of the forward
muon spectrometer () is not equipped with RPC stations. The
increase of the expected particles rate up to (including a
safety factor 3) motivates the installation of RPC chambers to guarantee
redundancy with the CSC chambers already present. The actual RPC technology of
CMS cannot sustain the expected background level. The new technology that will
be chosen should have a high rate capability and provides a good spatial and
timing resolution. A new generation of Glass-RPC (GRPC) using low-resistivity
(LR) glass is proposed to equip at least the two most far away of the four high
muon stations of CMS. First the design of small size prototypes and
studies of their performance in high-rate particles flux is presented. Then the
proposed designs for large size chambers and their fast-timing electronic
