Continued development of doped-germanium photoconductors for astronomical observations at wavelengths from 30 to 120 micrometers
The development of doped-germanium detectors which have optimized performance in the 30- to 120-mu m wavelength range and are capable of achieving the objectives of the infrared astronomical satellite (IRAS) space mission is discussed. Topics covered include the growth and evaluation of Ge:Ga and Ge:Be crystals, procedures for the fabrication and testing of detectors, irradiance calculations, detector responsivity, and resistance measurements through MOSFET. Test data are presented in graphs and charts
Evaluation of remote sensing in control of pink bollworm in cotton
The author has identified the following significant results. This project is to identify and map cotton fields in the southern deserts of California. Cotton in the Imperial, Coachella, and Palo Verde Valleys is heavily infested by the pink bollworm which affects both the quantity and quality of cotton produced. In California the growing season of cotton is regulated by establishing planting and plowdown dates. These procedures ensure that the larvae, whose diapause or resting period occurs during the winter months, will have no plant material on which to feed, thus inhibiting spring moth emergence. the underflight data from the U-2 aircraft has shound that it is possible to detect the differences between a growing, a defoliated, and plowed down field providing the locations of the fields are known. The ERTS-1 MSS data are being analyzed using an I2S optical color combiner to determine which combinations of dates and colors will identify cotton fields and thus provide the data needed to produce maps of the fields for the forthcoming season

Evaluation of remote sensing in control of pink bollworm in cotton
The author has identified the following significant results. This investigation is to evaluate the use of a satellite in monitoring the cotton production regulation program of the State of California as an aid in controlling pink bollworm infestation in the southern deserts of California. Color combined images of ERTS-1 multispectral images simulating color infrared are being used for crop identification. The status of each field (crop, bare, harvested, wet, plowed) is mapped from the imagery and is then compared to ground survey information taken at the time of ERTS-1 overflights. A computer analysis has been performed to compare field and satellite data to a crop calendar. Correlation to date has been 97% for field condition. Actual crop identification varies; cotton identification is only 63% due to lack of full season coverage

Empirical research within the social scientific study of religion in general and within the psychology of religion in particular remains very conscious of the complex nature of its subject matter. Empirical research in this field needs to take cognisance of the many forms in which religion is expressed (say, Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and Sikhism) and the many facets within the forms (say, beliefs, behaviours and affiliation). Working in the 1970s, Francis (1978a; 1978b) advanced the view that the attitudinal dimension of religion offered a particularly fruitful basis for coordinating empirical enquiry into the correlates, antecedents and consequences of religiosity across the life span
Microwave resonance of the reentrant insulating quantum Hall phases in the 1st excited Landau Level
We present measurements of the real diagonal microwave conductivity of the
reentrant insulating quantum Hall phases in the first excited Landau level at
temperatures below 50 mK. A resonance is detected around filling factor
and weaker frequency dependence is seen at and 2.28.
These measurements are consistent with the formation of a bubble phase crystal
centered around these at very low temperatures
The perimeter of large planar Voronoi cells: a double-stranded random walk
Let be the probability for a planar Poisson-Voronoi cell to have
exactly sides. We construct the asymptotic expansion of up to
terms that vanish as . We show that {\it two independent biased
random walks} executed by the polar angle determine the trajectory of the cell
perimeter. We find the limit distribution of (i) the angle between two
successive vertex vectors, and (ii) the one between two successive perimeter
segments. We obtain the probability law for the perimeter's long wavelength
deviations from circularity. We prove Lewis' law and show that it has

QUAGMIRE v1.3: a quasi-geostrophic model for investigating rotating fluids experiments
QUAGMIRE is a quasi-geostrophic numerical model for performing fast, high-resolution simulations of multi-layer rotating annulus laboratory experiments on a desktop personal computer. The model uses a hybrid finite-difference/spectral approach to numerically integrate the coupled nonlinear partial differential equations of motion in cylindrical geometry in each layer. Version 1.3 implements the special case of two fluid layers of equal resting depths. The flow is forced either by a differentially rotating lid, or by relaxation to specified streamfunction or potential vorticity fields, or both. Dissipation is achieved through Ekman layer pumping and suction at the horizontal boundaries, including the internal interface. The effects of weak interfacial tension are included, as well as the linear topographic beta-effect and the quadratic centripetal beta-effect. Stochastic forcing may optionally be activated, to represent approximately the effects of random unresolved features. A leapfrog time stepping scheme is used, with a Robert filter. Flows simulated by the model agree well with those observed in the corresponding laboratory experiments
