    Static noise tests on augmentor wing jet STOL research aircraft (C8A Buffalo)

    Results are presented for full scale ground static acoustic tests of over-area conical nozzles and a lobe nozzle installed on the Augmentor Wing Jet STOL Research Aircraft, a modified C8A Buffalo. The noise levels and spectrums of the test nozzles are compared against those of the standard conical nozzle now in use on the aircraft. Acoustic evaluations at 152 m (500 ft), 304 m (1000 ft), and 1216 m (4000 ft) are made at various engine power settings with the emphasis on approach and takeoff power. Appendix A contains the test log and propulsion calculations. Appendix B gives the original test plan, which was closely adhered to during the test.     Familism, Sexual Abuse, and Domestic Violence among Immigrant Mexican Women

    Immigrant Mexican women (IMW) experience domestic violence (DV) as adults, yet little is known about childhood sexual abuse (CSA) experiences and possible linkages between childhood and adult abuses. A qualitative exploratory study was conducted using in-depth interviews and grounded theory to examine DV among nine IMW residing in a southwestern city. Experience of childhood sexual abuse, domestic violence, and the role of familism on reporting and disclosing were categories that emerged in the data. Findings indicated seven of the nine participants had experienced CSA. Social workers in practice can utilize findings toward a better understanding of how to serve IMW

    Application of the ERTS system to the study of Wyoming resources with emphasis on the use of basic data products

    Many potential users of ERTS data products and other aircraft and satellite imagery are limited to visual methods of analyses of these products. Illustrations are presented from Wyoming studies that have employed these standard data products for a variety of geologic and related studies. Possible economic applications of these studies are summarized. Studies include regional geologic mapping for updating and correcting existing maps and to supplement incomplete regional mapping; illustrations of the value of seasonal images in geologic mapping; specialized mapping of such features as sand dunes, playa lakes, lineaments, glacial features, regional facies changes, and their possible economic value; and multilevel sensing as an aid in mineral exploration. Examples of cooperative studies involving botanists, plant scientists, and geologists for the preparation of maps of surface resources that can be used by planners and for environmental impact studies are given

    Cadherin-7 function in zebrafish development

    Cadherin cell adhesion molecules play crucial roles in vertebrate development. Most studies have focused on examining the functions of classical type I cadherins (e.g., cadherin-2) in the development of vertebrates. Little information is available concerning the function of classical type II cadherins (e.g., cadherin-7) in vertebrate development. We have previously shown that cadherin-7 mRNA exhibits a dynamic expression pattern in the central nervous system and notochord in embryonic zebrafish. To gain insight into the role of cadherin-7 in the formation of these structures, we analyzed their formation in zebrafish embryos injected with cadherin-7-specific antisense morpholino oligonucleotides (MO). Notochord development was severely disrupted in MO-injected embryos, whereas gross defects in the development of the central nervous system were not detected in MO-injected embryos. Our results thus demonstrate that cadherin-7 plays an important role in the normal development of the zebrafish notochord

    THE WOMAN BEHIND THE EAGLE: IMPACT OF THE CHARACTER OF THE FIRST LADY ON PRESIDENTIAL APPROVAL RATINGS

    Throughout the history of the Executive branch, there has always been a First Lady standing at the side of the President. Historically, that position was kept in the shadows behind the President. The First Lady’s only public job was to play gracious hostess to those visiting the White House. However, now, the First Lady is expected to stand next to the President contributing in her own right and is expected to choose an issue that she will focus on throughout the duration of her husband’s term. Her role in the White House is evolving into a more political role including meeting with foreign dignitaries and developing legislation of her own to advance a particular issue. The first question after the election regarding the First Lady recently has been on which issue she will choose as her platform during her tenure. With the emerging focus on the First Lady, one must ask how that focus will affect the President and his political capital with the constituency. Using the foundation of an analysis of Presidential character by James David Barber, I will classify the First Lady into one of the four character types. I am interested in the effect that the First Lady’s character has on presidential approval ratings. With an analysis of a selection of the most recent First Ladies, beginning with Nancy Reagan and ending with Laura Bush, I will place these First Ladies into the Barber categories based on an analysis of their lives. I will then examine their individual approval ratings to see if the Barber analysis of their character holds true and determine how they have affected their presidential husbands either positively or negatively. I hypothesize that the public approval rating of the president will be affected by his wife. With a small sample size, I will seek to show that approval ratings will be higher for a President who is paired with a passive-positive First Lady. I hypothesize there will be an effect of the First Lady’s character and subsequent approval ratings on Presidential approval ratings which the White House will then use to parley into positive political capital for the President

    Phosphonopeptides Revisited, in an Era of Increasing Antimicrobial Resistance

    Given the increase in resistance to antibacterial agents, there is an urgent need for the development of new agents with novel modes of action. As an interim solution, it is also prudent to reinvestigate old or abandoned antibacterial compounds to assess their efficacy in the context of widespread resistance to conventional agents. In the 1970s, much work was performed on the development of peptide mimetics, exemplified by the phosphonopeptide, alafosfalin. We investigated the activity of alafosfalin, di-alanyl fosfalin and β-chloro-L-alanyl-β-chloro-L-alanine against 297 bacterial isolates, including carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (CPE) (n = 128), methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) (n = 37) and glycopeptide-resistant enterococci (GRE) (n = 43). The interaction of alafosfalin with meropenem was also examined against 20 isolates of CPE. The MIC50 and MIC90 of alafosfalin for CPE were 1 mg/L and 4 mg/L, respectively and alafosfalin acted synergistically when combined with meropenem against 16 of 20 isolates of CPE. Di-alanyl fosfalin showed potent activity against glycopeptide-resistant isolates of Enterococcus faecalis (MIC90; 0.5 mg/L) and Enterococcus faecium (MIC90; 2 mg/L). Alafosfalin was only moderately active against MRSA (MIC90; 8 mg/L), whereas β-chloro-L-alanyl-β-chloro-L-alanine was slightly more active (MIC90; 4 mg/L). This study shows that phosphonopeptides, including alafosfalin, may have a therapeutic role to play in an era of increasing antibacterial resistance

    Test of acoustic tone source and propulsion performance of C8A Buffalo suppressor nozzle

    Results are presented for a static acoustic and propulsion performance ground test conducted at the Boeing hot nozzle facility on the C8A Buffalo noise suppressor nozzle. Various methods to remove a nozzle-associated 2000-Hz tone are evaluated. Results of testing this rectangular-array lobed nozzle for propulsion performance and acoustic directivity are reported. Recommendations for future nozzle modifications and further testing are included. Appendix A contains the test plan. Appendix B presents the test log. Appendix C contains plots of the one-third octave sound pressure levels recorded during the test. Appendix D describes the acoustic data recording and reduction systems.     CTRP3 and Serum Triglycerides in Children Aged 7-10 Years

Introduction The prevalence of obesity-related disorders has been steadily increasing over the past couple of decades. Diseases that were once only detected in adults are now prevalent in children, such as hyperlipidemia. The adipose tissue-derived hormonal factor C1q TNF Related Protein 3 (CTRP3) has been linked to triglyceride regulation especially in animal models. However, the relationship between circulating CTRP3 levels and obesity-related disorders in human subjects is controversial. CTRP3 can circulate in different oligomeric complexes: trimeric (kDa), middle molecular weight (100–300 kDa), and high molecular weight (HMW) oligomeric complexes (\u3e300 kDa). Previous work has identified that it is not the total amount of CTRP3 present in the serum, but the specific circulating oligomeric complexes that appear to be indicative of the relationship between CTRP3 and serum lipids levels. However, this work has not been examined in children. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare the levels of different oligomeric complexes of CTRP3 and circulating lipid levels among young children (aged 7–10 years). Methods Morphometric data and serum samples were collected and analyzed from a cross-sectional population of 62 children of self-identified Hispanic origin from a community health center, between 2015 and 2016. Serum analysis included adiponectin, insulin, leptin, ghrelin, glucagon, C-reactive peptide, triglyceride, cholesterol, IL-6, TNF, and CTRP3. Correlation analyses were conducted to explore the relationships between CTRP3 and other biomarkers. Results Total CTRP3 concentrations were significantly positively correlated with total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol. Whereas, HMW CTRP3 was not significantly associated with any variable measured. Conversely, the middle molecular weight (MMW) CTRP3 was negatively correlated with triglycerides levels, and very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL), insulin, and body mass index (BMI). The negative correlations between MMW CTRP3 and triglycerides and VLDLs were particularly strong (r2 = -0.826 and -0.827, respectively). Conclusion Overall, these data indicate that the circulating oligomeric state of CTRP3 and not just total CTRP3 level is important for understanding the association between CTRP3 and metabolic diseases. Further, this work indicates that MMW CTRP3 plays an important role in triglyceride and VLDL regulation which requires further study

    Differential Expression of Cadherin-2 and Cadherin-4 in the Developing and Adult Zebrafish Visual System

    Cadherins are homophilic cell adhesion molecules that control development of a variety of tissues and maintenance of adult structures. Although cadherins have been implicated in the development of the brain, including the visual system, in several vertebrate species, little is known of their role in zebrafish. In this study, we examined distribution of cadherin-2 (Cdh2, N-cadherin) in the visual system of developing and adult zebrafish using both immunocytochemical and in situ hybridization methods, and we compared Cdh2 distribution to that of the previously reported and closely related cadherin-4 (Cdh4, R-cadherin). As in other vertebrates, in zebrafish embryos Cdh2 was widely expressed in the early nervous system, but its expression became more restricted as development proceeded. Cdh4 was not detectable until later in development, at about the time when the first ganglion cells are generated. Cdh2 and Cdh4 were expressed in distinct regions of developing visual structures, including the lens. We hypothesize that the differential expression of these two cadherins in developing zebrafish visual structures reflects functionally different roles in the development of the vertebrate visual system
