Pulsar "Drifting"-Subpulse Polarization: No Evidence for Systematic Polarization-Angle Rotations

    Get PDF
Polarization-angle density displays are given for pulsars B0809+74 and B2303+30, which exhibit no evidence of the systematic polarization-angle rotation within individual subpulses previously reported for these two stars. The ``drifting'' subpulses of both pulsars exhibit strikingly linear and circular polarization which appears to reflect the characteristics of two nearly orthogonally polarized emission ``modes''--along which the severe average-profile depolarization that is characteristic of their admixture at comparable overall intensities.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysic

The Skeletal Biology of the New York African Burial Ground (Pt. 1)

    Get PDF
The New York African Burial Ground was “rediscovered” in 1989 in the process of preparation for the construction of a proposed 34-story federal office building by the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) at 290 Broadway in New York City (Ingle et al. 1990). The site for the proposed building was once part of the African Burial Ground that extended “from Chambers Street on the south to Duane Street on the north and from Centre Street on the east to Broadway on the west” (Yamin 2000:vii). A fullscale archaeological excavation was conducted by Historic Conservation and Interpretation (HCI) and John Milner Associates, Inc. (JMA), preceding the building project, as required under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (NHPA) (as amended) in order to mitigate the destruction of potential cultural resources (Figure 1). The excavation and construction site on the African Burial Ground is located at Foley Square, in the city block bounded by Broadway, Duane, Reade, and Elk Streets in Lower Manhattan, one block north of City Hall.https://scholarworks.wm.edu/asbook/1042/thumbnail.jp

13 - Who should lead: How cognitive ability and personality predict leadership.

    Get PDF
Traditional measures of leadership explicitly ask test-takers whether they engage in successful leadership behaviors (e.g., Bass & Avolio, 1995). While these tests do show some relationships with leader effectiveness (Dumdum, Lowe, & Avolio, 2013), these tests are not ideal because test-takers could stretch the truth to make themselves appear to be a more qualified leader than they actually are. Because of this problem, we developed a test (Transactional/Transformational Implicit Leadership Test) designed to assess leadership style without appearing to be a measurement of leadership. For the present study, we administered our new measurement of leadership, a traditional leadership test, and multiple cognitive and personality tests to over 50 subjects. We designed the study to examine two questions 1.) how well our new test of leadership measures leadership compared to a traditional test and 2.) which type of individual difference predicts leadership style more accurately, cognitive abilities (e.g., fluid intelligence and working memory capacity) or personality traits (e.g., extroversion and conscientiousness). Measuring effective leadership is important when determining who should be in charge. The results of the present study are important for determining how leaders are chosen in an industrial and organizational context

On the connection between gamma and radio radiation spectra in pulsars

The model of pulsar radio emission is discussed in which a coherent radio emis-sion is excited in a vacuum gap above polar cap of neutron star. Pulsar X and gamma radiation are considered as the result of low-frequency radio emission inverse Comp-ton scattering on ultra relativistic electrons accelerated in the gap. The influence of the pulsar magnetic field on Compton scattering is taken into account. The relation of radio and gamma radiation spectra has been found in the framework of the model.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures, Russian version accepted to JETP, partly published in JETP Letters, Vol. 85, #6 (2007

Polarization observations of nine southern millisecond pulsars

Mean pulse profiles and polarization properties are presented for nine southern pulsars. The observations were made using the Parkes radio telescope at frequencies near 1330 MHz; three of the nine pulsars were also observed at 660 MHz. A very high degree of circular polarization was observed in PSR J1603-7202. Complex position angle variations which are not well described by the rotating-vector model were observed in PSRs J2124-3358 and J2145-0750, both of which have very wide profiles. Rotation measures were obtained for all nine pulsars, with two implying relatively strong interstellar magnetic fields.Comment: 24 pages, 11 figs, accepted by Ap

Chromatic number, clique subdivisions, and the conjectures of Haj\'os and Erd\H{o}s-Fajtlowicz

For a graph GG, let χ(G)\chi(G) denote its chromatic number and σ(G)\sigma(G) denote the order of the largest clique subdivision in GG. Let H(n) be the maximum of χ(G)/σ(G)\chi(G)/\sigma(G) over all nn-vertex graphs GG. A famous conjecture of Haj\'os from 1961 states that σ(G)≄χ(G)\sigma(G) \geq \chi(G) for every graph GG. That is, H(n)≀1H(n) \leq 1 for all positive integers nn. This conjecture was disproved by Catlin in 1979. Erd\H{o}s and Fajtlowicz further showed by considering a random graph that H(n)≄cn1/2/log⁥nH(n) \geq cn^{1/2}/\log n for some absolute constant c>0c>0. In 1981 they conjectured that this bound is tight up to a constant factor in that there is some absolute constant CC such that χ(G)/σ(G)≀Cn1/2/log⁥n\chi(G)/\sigma(G) \leq Cn^{1/2}/\log n for all nn-vertex graphs GG. In this paper we prove the Erd\H{o}s-Fajtlowicz conjecture. The main ingredient in our proof, which might be of independent interest, is an estimate on the order of the largest clique subdivision which one can find in every graph on nn vertices with independence number α\alpha.Comment: 14 page
