Using Google Analytics, Voyant and Other Tools to Better Understand Use of Manuscript Collections at L. Tom Perry Special Collections
[Excerpt] Developing strategies for making data-driven, objective decisions for digitization and value-added processing. based on patron usage has been an important effort in the L. Tom Perry Special Collections (hereafter Perry Special Collections). In a previous study, the authors looked at how creating a matrix using both Web analytics and in-house use statistics could provide a solid basis for making decisions about which collections to digitize as well as which collections merited deeper description. Along with providing this basis for decision making, the study also revealed some intriguing insights into how our collections were being used and raised some important questions about the impact of description on both digital and physical usage. We have continued analyzing the data from our first study and that data forms the basis of the current study. It is helpful to review the major outcomes of our previous study before looking at what we have learned in this deeper analysis. In the first study, we utilized three sources of statistical data to compare two distinct data points (in-house use and online finding aid use) and determine if there were any patterns or other information that would help curators in the department make better decisions about the items or collections selected for digitization or value-added processing. To obtain our data points, we combined two data sources related to the in-person use of manuscript collections in the Perry Special Collections reading room and one related to the use of finding aids for manuscript collections made available online through the department’s Finding Aid database ( http://findingaid.lib.byu.edu/). We mapped the resulting data points into a four quadrant graph (see figure 1)
The Separable Kernel of Nucleon-Nucleon Interaction in the Bethe-Salpeter Approach
The dispersion relations for nucleon-nucleon (NN) T-matrix in the framework
of Bethe-Salpeter equation for two spin one-half particle system and with
separable kernel of interaction are considered in the paper. The developed
expressions are applied for construction of the separable kernel of interaction
for S partial-waves in singlet and triplet channels. We calculate the low
energy scattering parameters and the phase shifts and also the deuteron binding
energy with the separable interaction. The approach can be easily extended to
higher partial-waves for NN-scattering and other reactions (anti N N-, pi

Machine Learning for Quantum Mechanical Properties of Atoms in Molecules
We introduce machine learning models of quantum mechanical observables of
atoms in molecules. Instant out-of-sample predictions for proton and carbon
nuclear chemical shifts, atomic core level excitations, and forces on atoms
reach accuracies on par with density functional theory reference. Locality is
exploited within non-linear regression via local atom-centered coordinate
systems. The approach is validated on a diverse set of 9k small organic
molecules. Linear scaling of computational cost in system size is demonstrated
for saturated polymers with up to sub-mesoscale lengths
Relativistic calculation of the triton binding energy and its implications
First results for the triton binding energy obtained from the relativistic
spectator or Gross equation are reported. The Dirac structure of the nucleons
is taken into account. Numerical results are presented for a family of
realistic OBE models with off-shell scalar couplings. It is shown that these
off-shell couplings improve both the fits to the two-body data and the

The aim of the MoreGrasp project is to develop a noninvasive, multimodal user interface including a brain-computer interface (BCI) for intuitive control of a grasp neuroprosthesis to support individuals with high spinal cord injury (SCI) in everyday activities. We describe the current state of the project, including the EEG system, preliminary results of natural movements decoding in people with SCI, the new electrode concept for the grasp neuroprosthesis, the shared control architecture behind the system and the implementation of a user-centered design
Quantum Monte Carlo Studies of Relativistic Effects in Light Nuclei
Relativistic Hamiltonians are defined as the sum of relativistic one-body
kinetic energy, two- and three-body potentials and their boost corrections. In
this work we use the variational Monte Carlo method to study two kinds of
relativistic effects in the binding energy of 3H and 4He. The first is due to
the nonlocalities in the relativistic kinetic energy and relativistic one-pion
exchange potential (OPEP), and the second is from boost interaction. The OPEP
contribution is reduced by about 15% by the relativistic nonlocality, which may
also have significant effects on pion exchange currents. However, almost all of
this reduction is canceled by changes in the kinetic energy and other
interaction terms, and the total effect of the nonlocalities on the binding
energy is very small. The boost interactions, on the other hand, give repulsive
contributions of 0.4 (1.9) MeV in 3H (4He) and account for 37% of the
phenomenological part of the three-nucleon interaction needed in the
