An Economic Analysis of The Pink Tax

    Get PDF
The “Pink Tax” broadly refers to firm pricing strategies and/or government policies that raise transactional costs (usually higher taxes or higher prices) for women. Conversations about the Pink Tax have been steadily growing over the past several decades; people have conflicting views on its existence, causes, and implications, to the point that there are substantive questions regarding its validity. More research is needed to determine where exactly the Pink Tax comes from and what are its true effects. For those who argue that the Pink Tax exists and is detrimental to females, a leading explanation for the transmission mechanism is through the propagation of gender socialization trough marketing strategies. Due to the lack of government data that allow for direct measurement of the Pink Tax, this study provides an analysis of consumers’ exposure to marketing. Specifically, this study correlates gender, age, race, marital status, and marijuana use (to proxy for preferences for certain types of behavior) with marketing exposure, to offer support for the claim that the Pink Tax benefits from this transmission mechanism. The findings demonstrate there is a strong inverse relationship between education and marketing exposure, measured by hours spent watching television in a week as a teenager

The space had a significant effect (p<0.05) to the dry matter production of biomass and crude fiber. The average variety of fresh biomass plant production was (18.90 tons ha-1), dry matter production of biomass was (4 ton ha-1), ash (5.51%), crude fiber (30.90%) and crude protein (8.45%). The average dry matter production was 4.34 tons ha-1 and crude fiber 29.96%. It can be concluded that the highest production and the best nutrient quality of sorghum hybrid was obtained at the sorghum variety of 12S49001, the distance of 25x25 cm was the best plant space for hybrid sorghum production. Keywords: hybrid varieties, nutrient, plant space, productio

Semi-classical Probe Strings on Giant Gravitons Backgrounds

In the first part of this paper we study two Z2Z_2 symmetries of the LLM metric, both of which exchange black and white regions. One of them which can be interpreted as the particle-hole symmetry is the symmetry of the whole supergravity solution while the second one is just the symmetry of the metric and changes the sign of the fivefrom flux. In the second part of the paper we use closed string probes and their semi-classical analysis to compare the two 1/2 BPS deformations of AdS5×S5AdS_5\times S^5, the smooth LLM geometry which contains localized giant gravitons and the superstar case which is a solution with naked singularity corresponding to smeared giants. We discuss the realization of the Z2Z_2 symmetry in the semi-classical closed string probes point of view.Comment: 29 pages, 6 .eps figures; v2: References adde

Background: It is the parents' responsibility to vaccinate their children. As a result, parents' attitudes, knowledge, and beliefs about vaccination are critical because they influence their activities toward timely and full immunization.  Objectives: This systematic review comprehensively investigated the recently published literature on parents’ knowledge regarding children’s vaccination.  Methods: PubMed, SCOPUS, Web of Science, Science Direct, and Google Scholar were systematically searched to include the relevant literature. Rayyan QRCI was used throughout this systematic approach. Results & interpretation: This review included twenty-four studies with a total of 13082 parents, and 70.9% were mothers. Knowledge level about children’s vaccination among parents was significantly related to their fathers' age, education level, women's employment status, and family type. Younger mothers were found to have a higher level of expertise. Good knowledge levels and positive attitudes towards the seasonal influenza vaccine were reported. Good knowledge with caution was reported among parents regarding COVID-19 vaccination. The knowledge about HPV infection and vaccination: All of them reported low vaccination rates and willingness to vaccinate their children. The findings of our study highlight the significance of parental understanding of vaccinations and immunization. Health officials should make additional efforts to promote the benefits of vaccination while emphasizing the risks of non- or late pediatric immunization

Molecular basis of FAAH-OUT-associated human pain insensitivity

Chronic pain affects millions of people worldwide and new treatments are needed urgently. One way to identify novel analgesic strategies is to understand the biological dysfunctions that lead to human inherited pain insensitivity disorders. Here we report how the recently discovered brain and dorsal root ganglia-expressed FAAH-OUT long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) gene, which was found from studying a pain-insensitive patient with reduced anxiety and fast wound healing, regulates the adjacent key endocannabinoid system gene FAAH, which encodes the anandamide-degrading fatty acid amide hydrolase enzyme. We demonstrate that the disruption in FAAH-OUT lncRNA transcription leads to DNMT1-dependent DNA methylation within the FAAH promoter. In addition, FAAH-OUT contains a conserved regulatory element, FAAH-AMP, that acts as an enhancer for FAAH expression. Furthermore, using transcriptomic analyses in patient-derived cells we have uncovered a network of genes that are dysregulated from disruption of the FAAH-FAAH-OUT axis, thus providing a coherent mechanistic basis to understand the human phenotype observed. Given that FAAH is a potential target for the treatment of pain, anxiety, depression and other neurological disorders, this new understanding of the regulatory role of the FAAH-OUT gene provides a platform for the development of future gene and small molecule therapies

Background: According to the World Health Organization (WHO), hearing loss is the fourth largest disability globally, affecting an estimated 466 million people in 2018. In Indonesia, the prevalence of hearing loss was estimated at 16.8% in 2016. Intra-Arterial Heparin Flushing (IAHF) is an endovascular technique that uses heparin to promote reperfusion and increases Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) expression. VEGF is a polypeptide angiogenesis factor present in the nervous system, which functions as a neurotrophic and neuroprotective. Meanwhile, prestin is a protein of outer ear hair cells that shows early signs of hearing loss through increased levels in cases of ear hair cell damage. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the effect of IAHF on prestin and VEGF levels in hearing-impaired patients. Methods: The design is experimental with Pre-Post Test One-Group Only. A total of 22 patients with hearing loss were measured for prestin and VEGF before and 4 hours after the IAHF procedure. Results: The results of the Wilcoxon test showed no significant differences in prestin level (p=0.658) and VEGF level (p=0.291) before and after the IAHF procedure. The mean showed an insignificant decrease in prestin level before and after the IAHF procedure with values of 1,185+1,229 pg/mL and 1,096+1,183 pg/mL, respectively. However, the VEGF level insignificantly increased before and after the procedure with values of 484.83+274.6 pg/mL and 498.79+257.7 pg/mL, respectively. Conclusion: There were no significant differences in prestin and VEGF levels before and after the IAHF procedure. However, there was a decrease in the prestin level and an increase in the VEGF level
