    Fiduciary Access to Digital Assets: A Review of the Uniform Law Conference of Canada\u27s Proposed Uniform Act and Comparable American Model Legislation

    No jurisdiction in Canada has yet enacted comprehensive legislation regarding fiduciary access to the digital assets of an individual who has died, become incapacitated, or has appointed an attorney or other representative. In August, 2016, the Uniform Law Conference of Canada (ULCC) adopted a uniform Act on fiduciary access to digital assets (ULCC Uniform Act). This paper discusses why there may be a need for legislation, and then examines the most important elements of the ULCC Uniform Act. The Act, which tends to favour fiduciary access and media neutrality, is compared throughout the paper with the two American Acts prepared by the American Uniform Law Commission. The first American Act was adopted in 2014 and then withdrawn due to concerns voiced by internet service providers and civil liberty groups regarding privacy issues, and the other, a revised version, was subsequently adopted in 2015

    Novel pathways for glycoprotein import into chloroplasts

    Although the chloroplast contains its own genome, majority of its protein components are encoded by nuclear genes and must be imported post-translationally. In general, proteins synthesized by cytosolic ribosomes are post-translationally targeted to the chloroplast through interactions between their N-terminal transit sequence and protein translocon Toc/Tic complexes in the chloroplast membranes. An alternative pathway that mediates post-translational delivery of proteins to the chloroplast via the secretory pathway was recently described. This pathway provides new opportunities for complementation of the chloroplast protein maturation machinery with chaperones needing endoplasmic reticulum and/or Golgi typical maturations such as N-glycosylation for their biological activity or using chloroplasts as a storage compartment for glycoproteins

    On the structure of the post-Newtonian expansion in general relativity

    In the continuation of a preceding work, we derive a new expression for the metric in the near zone of an isolated matter system in post-Newtonian approximations of general relativity. The post-Newtonian metric, a solution of the field equations in harmonic coordinates, is formally valid up to any order, and is cast in the form of a particular solution of the wave equation, plus a specific homogeneous solution which ensures the asymptotic matching to the multipolar expansion of the gravitational field in the exterior of the system. The new form provides some insights on the structure of the post-Newtonian expansion in general relativity and the gravitational radiation reaction terms therein.Comment: 22 pages, to appear in Phys.     Hands-On Universe: A Global Program for Education and Public Outreach in Astronomy

    Hands-On Universe (HOU) is an educational program that enables students to investigate the Universe while applying tools and concepts from science, math, and technology. Using the Internet, HOU participants around the world request observations from an automated telescope, download images from a large image archive, and analyze them with the aid of user-friendly image processing software. This program is developing now in many countries, including the USA, France, Germany, Sweden, Japan, Australia, and others. A network of telescopes has been established among these countries, many of them remotely operated, as shown in the accompanying demo. Using this feature, students in the classroom are able to make night observations during the day, using a telescope placed in another country. An archive of images taken on large telescopes is also accessible, as well as resources for teachers. Students are also dealing with real research projects, e.g. the search for asteroids, which resulted in the discovery of a Kuiper Belt object by high-school students. Not only Hands-On Universe gives the general public an access to professional astronomy, but it is also a more general tool to demonstrate the use of a complex automated system, the techniques of data processing and automation.     Higher-order spin effects in the dynamics of compact binaries II. Radiation field

    Motivated by the search for gravitational waves emitted by binary black holes, we investigate the gravitational radiation field of point particles with spins within the framework of the multipolar-post-Newtonian wave generation formalism. We compute: (i) the spin-orbit (SO) coupling effects in the binary's mass and current quadrupole moments one post-Newtonian (1PN) order beyond the dominant effect, (ii) the SO contributions in the gravitational-wave energy flux and (iii) the secular evolution of the binary's orbital phase up to 2.5PN order. Crucial ingredients for obtaining the 2.5PN contribution in the orbital phase are the binary's energy and the spin precession equations, derived in paper I of this series. These results provide more accurate gravitational-wave templates to be used in the data analysis of rapidly rotating Kerr-type black-hole binaries with the ground-based detectors LIGO, Virgo, GEO 600 and TAMA300, and the space-based detector LISA.Comment: includes the correction of an erratum to be published in Phys.
