    Unveiling the Effect of Magnetic Noise in the Coherence of Single-Molecule Quantum Processors

    Quantum bits (qubits) constitute the most elementary building-blocks of any quantum technology, where information is stored and processed in the form of quantum superpositions between discrete energy levels. In particular, the fabrication of quantum processors is a key long-term goal that will allow us conducting specific tasks much more efficiently than the most powerful classical computers can do. Motivated by recent experiments in which three addressable spin qubits are defined on a potential single-molecule quantum processor, namely the [Gd(H2O)P5W30O110]12− polyoxometalate, we investigate the decohering effect of magnetic noise on the encoded quantum information. Our state-of-the-art model, which provides more accurate results than previous estimates, show a noticeable contribution of magnetic noise in limiting the survival timescale of the qubits. Yet, our results suggest that it might not be the only dephasing mechanism at play but other mechanisms, such as lattice vibrations and physical movement of magnetic nuclei, must be considered to understand the whole decoherence process

    Clinical, methodology, and patient/carer expert advice in pediatric drug development by conect4children

    Many medicines are used “off-label” in children outside the terms of the license. Feasible pediatric clinical trials are a challenge to design. Conect4children (c4c) is an Innovative Medicines Initiative project to set up a pan-European pediatric clinical trial network aiming to facilitate the development of new medicines for children. To optimize pediatric trial development by promoting innovative trial design, c4c set up a European multidisciplinary advice service, including the voice of young patients and families, tailored to industry and academia. A network of experts was established to provide multidisciplinary advice to trial sponsors. Experts were selected to join clinical and innovative methodology expert groups. A patient and public involvement (PPI) database, to include the expert opinion of patients and parents/carers was formed. A stepwise process was developed: (1) sponsors contact c4c, (2) scoping interview takes place, (3) ad hoc advice group formed, (5) advice meeting held, and (6) advice report provided. Feedback on the process was collected. Twenty-four clinical and innovative methodology expert groups (>400 experts) and a PPI database of 135 registrants were established. As of September 30, 2022, 36 advice requests were received, with 25 requests completed. Clinical and methodology experts and PPI representatives participated in several advice requests. Sponsors appreciated the advice quality and the multidisciplinary experts from different countries, including experts not known before. Experts and PPI participants were generally satisfied with the process. The c4c project has shown successful proof of concept for a service that presents a new framework to plan innovative and feasible pediatric trials

    Mobile robot localization using a non-linear evolutionary filter

    Abstract—This article describes a localization system for autonomous mobile robot navigation in an indoor semi-structured environment. A peripheral ring of 24 ultrasonic sensors and a camera with a motorized zoom on a pan–tilt platform are used to obtain the information required for the localization process. A non-linear � lter based on a genetic algorithm as an emerging optimization method to search for optimal positions is presented. The proposed algorithm is based upon an iterative extended Kalman � lter (EKF), which utilizes matches between observed geometric beacons and a generic map of beacon locations and the detection of arti � cial landmarks, to correct the position and orientation of the vehicle. No exhaustive map of the environment is provided to the mobile robot. It must work with a generic description of the kinds of entities in the environment. The resulting self-localization module has been integrated successfully in a more complex navigation system based on a reactive architecture. Various experimental results show the effectiveness of the presented algorithm, including a comparison with the EKF method

    Landmark perception planning for a mobile robot localization

    This paper presents a fuzzy perception planner that takes into account the time cost, the suitability of every landmark detection and the different uncertainties the robot encounters along its path for mobile robot localization. The sensor used is a camera with a motorized zoom on a pan & tilt platform and the artificial landmarks are circles detected through normalized grayscale correlation. An Extended Kalman Filter is used to correct the position and orientation of the vehicle. The resulting self-localization module has been integrated successfully in a more complicated navigation system.

    Determining Key Local Vibrations in the Relaxation of Molecular Spin Qubits and Single-Molecule Magnets

    To design molecular spin qubits and nanomagnets operating at high temperatures, there is an urgent need to understand the relationship between vibrations and spin relaxation processes. Herein we develop a simple first-principles methodology to determine the modulation that vibrations exert on spin energy levels. This methodology is applied to [Cu­(mnt)<sub>2</sub>]<sup>2–</sup> (mnt<sup>2–</sup> = 1,2-dicyano­ethylene-1,2-dithiolate), a highly coherent complex. By theoretically identifying the most relevant vibrational modes, we are able to offer general strategies to chemically design more resilient magnetic molecules, where the energy of the spin states is not coupled to vibrations
