AFLATOXIN B1 IN CORN: DIRECT VERIFICATION OF CONTAMINATION THROUGH AN AUTOMATIC COMPUTERIZED SYSTEM BASED ON THE FLUORESCENCE
"Aflaflesh" is a computer based instrument, designed combining a visual data acquisition system with a sophisticated software of acquisition and analysis of images. This system allows you to check on a representative sample (5/10 kg) contamination of corn by AFB1, using fluorescence under UV light when the grain is contaminated. To optimize the use of this control equipment were analyzed in two phases, a total of 80 samples comparing the results obtained by chemical analysis (Hplc) to those obtained using "Aflaflesh". Initially the study was set to correlate the number of contaminated grains to the ppb read by the official method, Hplc; the second step was to correlate ppb values to the number of pixel of contaminated surface of the grains read by the "Aflaflesh" instrument. The apparatus was then calibrated through a statistical analysis of the results obtained, to allow a direct reading of the AFB1 concentrations in a short period of time (15 min) without the assistance of specialized personnel
antifungal activity of rosemary essential oil against foodstuffs fungi
The essential oils are well known for their antibacteric, antomycotic and insecticide effects. In this research the antomycotic activity of Rosemary essential oil has been tested in vitro versus different moulds, common contaminants of food and feed, as Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus ochraceus, Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus ustus, Penicillium expansum, Penicillium aurantio-griseum, Fusarium moniliforme. The Rosemary essential oil tested (produced in Sardegna, Italy) shows a different efficacy against various moulds and his activity seems to be produced by borneol, α-pinene, eucalyptol, camphor and limonene. Aspergillus and Penicillium are the genus showing an important inhibition of their development in vitro. Rosemary essential oil for these natural properties can be used as antimycotic additive to extended shelf-life of many foodstuffs
DevOps and its Philosophy : Education Matters!
DevOps processes comply with principles and offer practices with main objective to support efficiently the evolution of IT systems. To be efficient a DevOps process relies on a set of integrated tools. DevOps is among the first competencies together with Agile method required by the industry. As a new approach it is necessary to develop and offer to the academy and to the industry training programs to prepare our engineers in the best possible way.
In this chapter we present the main aspects of the educational effort made in the recent years to educate to the concepts and values of the DevOps philosophy. This includes principles, practices, tools and architectures, primarily the microservices architectural style, which shares many aspects of DevOps approaches especially the modularity and flexibility which enables continuous change and delivery. Two experiences have been made, one at academic level as a master program course and the other, as an industrial training.
Based on those two experiences, we provide a comparative analysis and some proposals in order to develop and improve DevOps education for the future
An End-to-End Semantic Platform for Nutritional Diseases Management
The self-management of nutritional diseases requires a system that combines food tracking with the potential risks of food categories on people’s health based on their personal health records (PHRs). The challenges range from the design of an effective food image classification strategy to the development of a full-fledged knowledge-based system. This maps the results of the classification strategy into semantic information that can be exploited for reasoning. However, current works mainly address the single challenges separately without their integration into a whole pipeline. In this paper, we propose a new end-to-end semantic platform where: (i) the classification strategy aims to extract food categories from food pictures; (ii) an ontology is used for detecting the risk factors of food categories for specific diseases; (iii) the Linked Open Data (LOD) Cloud is queried for extracting information concerning related diseases and comorbidities; and, (iv) information from the users’ PHRs are exploited for generating proper personal feedback. Experiments are conducted on a new publicly released dataset. Quantitative and qualitative evaluations, from two living labs, demonstrate the effectiveness and the suitability of the proposed approach
MICROBIOLOGICAL SURVEY ON JELLYFISH FOOD PRODUCTS: PRELIMINARY RESULTS
A microbiological survey was performed on ten brined jellyfish products, sampled in Italy from Chinese food markets. In general, the microbiological conditions were good and respected the standards contemplated in the regulations CE 2073/2005 e 1441/2007. The presence of inhibiting substances and the absence of aerobic mesophilic bacteria in two samples suggest a treatment to preserve the product

Adhesive stresses in axially-loaded tubular bonded joints - Part II: development of an explicit closed-form solution for the Lubkin and Reissner model
The literature presents several analytical models and solutions for single- and double-lap bonded joints, whilst the joint between circular tubes is less common. For this geometry the pioneering model is that of Lubkin and Reissner (Trans. ASME 78, 1956), in which the tubes are treated as cylindrical thin shells subjected to membrane and bending loading, whilst the adhesive transmits shear and peel stresses which are a function of the axial coordinate only. Such assumptions are consistent with those usually adopted for the flat joints. A former investigation has shown that the L-R model agrees with FE results for many geometries and gives far better results than other models appeared later in the literature. The aim of the present work is to obtain and present an explicit closed-form solution, not reported by Lubkin and Reissner, which is achieved by solving the governing equations by means of the Laplace transform.
